Where You Live Should Not Decide....

U2 fans have helped deliver fourteen wells in Africa, providing water for up to 20,000 people.

The African Well Fund was set up by some enterprising U2 fans in 2002 a creative way of celebrating Bono's birthday.

Question: What do you give the man who has everything ?
Answer: Something useful for people who don't have everything.

A registered non-profit organization, AWF has held two successful fundraising campaigns to 'Build a Well for Bono's Birthday' and has now raised over $50,000. The recent "Swinging to the Music" parties to celebrate the launch of 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb' (hosted by fan site atU2.com) raised another hefty sum for the Fund.

Organisers believe that access to safe consumable water is a basic human right. "The African Well Fund believes that access to safe, consumable water is not merely a basic human need, but a basic human right. Our goal is to raise money for the construction and maintenance of clean water wells in Sub Saharan Africa."

Donations to the Fund are used by AWF's partner Africare for clean water projects in Africa - Africare is one of the leading charitable U.S. organizations assisting Africa.

In the past year alone funds raised by these enterprising fans topped $30,000 and will deliver projects estimated to impact nearly 13,000 people. Read more about how they propose to invest the 2004 funds.

And if you want to make your own donation toward digging wells and saving lives in Africa, you can do it here.

The AWF is the most wonderfyl example that I have seen in a long time of the power of people to make a difference.

It started two years ago as a determined dream in the hearts of a handful of individuals (I was part of the original discussion group and help every year on Bono's Birthday well-building campaigns) and has blossomed into a MAGNIFICENT organization.

Please check out the AWF and get involved with the effort to bring
clean water and a HOPEFUL FUTURE to thousands of Africans for generations to come!

You will be very glad you did.

Congratulations to all the members of AWF for getting the notice of U2.com. You all have done a tremendous job with this grassroots effort and are a definite asset to the U2 fan community.

Thank you for the kind words. Yes, we were pleasantly surprised at the u2.com article. Let us hope that this will translate into a bigger year for AWF and as a result, more water completed water projects than ever. AWF are committed to retaining our grassroots identity and volunteer base. I am hoping that 2005 will be the most successful yet, with several U2-themed fundraisers in the wings.

Stay tuned!

Julie
