HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB – U2

U2 have been busy. Labour party conferences, meeting the President of the USA, entering the UK hall of fame as founder members, and most importantly for us, finishing a new studio album. With all these distractions, can this LP live up to the high standards of the previous ten? Well frankly, yes.

U2 never stand still, but maintain the essence of what has made them the one untouchable global rock supergroup, bestriding the likes of Radiohead and the Red Hot Chili Peppers like a colossus and outlasting many others that have since fallen from grace. In a recent interview, they reasoned that they had lasted so long as they had stuck to being a band, first and foremost, and the album shows the natural togetherness that lets the music keep developing after so many years. Added to this is their innate ability to pick up on trends, while being true to their origins and there is plenty of evidence of that here.

There is serious quality all the way through this, from the growing 21st century guitar sound starts with All That You Can’t Leave Behind continues in Vertigo, while Love and Peace Or Else, sounds more like Rattle and Hum period. The Edge shows why he’s the best lead guitarist around, Bono continues to enthrall with his swooping, powerful vocals, and Larry and Adam provide their usual rock-solid foundation.

Forget the big name producers: this time it’s all about the band.
