What should be the 4th and 5th singles?

I reckon u2 will release 2 more singles from bomb. what does everyone think should be released? I think MD, OOTS and ABOY are the only songs left suitable for radio. IMO, MD should be the next single around september, and then OOTS should be released at christmas. I also believe that both these songs should remain untouched (i.e. not remixed).
What does everyone else think?

This is from a U.S perspective (so it's the only one that counts  )

I think it's safe to say that Original will be a single at some point. Maybe for the summer to get it out just in time for the Grammy cutoff. U2 seem to be darlings with the Grammy crowd, so there would be some positive advertising for the song and album which may generate bigger sales and a jump in charts.

Unfortunately, unless a heavy promotion for the next single, it probalby won't make too much of dent. In that case, I would like to see the song released without a 'edit'. The reason U2 has released radio edits is so they're more likely to get played. Radio likes catchy, short songs. U2's songs are usually over 4 minutes. That's probably just a little too long for radio.

I don't know about miracle drug. A lot of people will associate it with Bono's Africa work (not a bad thing) and may be turned off by it (since it's already in the news quite a bit). MD is also a song that takes a while to take off, so it may be too slow.

I guess I really don't know. I'm almost to the point of not caring. U2's team does not market the songs here in the U.S at all, except for the lead off single of the album. It bugs me because there are so many good songs on this album that deserved to be heard instead of the crap that's played currently.

Maybe it's intentional. Vertigo put the band back in the spotlight, and the commercial was on all the frick'n time. Maybe they don't want to over do it (a la Rattle and Hum).

So to answer the original question: OOTS, MD

hasnt there already been 4?

Vertigo
ABOY
Sometimes
COBL

So there will probably be 1 more max, I think it will probably be Original, though I do love MD

ABOY was not released outside of North America.

This won't happen, but...

I agree with Beal, but here's to hoping U2 decide to actually release a commercial single in the U.S. for the 3rd leg AND because their music is just SOOOO much better than what does make it big on U.S. radio.

First, I believe COBL will be another modest radio hit, ala Sometimes. There are 4 formats for Rock Radio in the U.S. now: Rock, Active Rock, Triple A Rock, and Alternative Rock. COBL has moved up very fast on the Rock Chart, going from 47 to 20 is 11 days. After watching this chart since January, I can tell you that is a very unusual jump. Here is the chart as it stands updated just an hour ago:

The reason I show this is because this is the fastest "rise" of the 3 2005 singles, so far, off of HTDAAB. However, it's taken off by itself, with no commercial release and to this point, no video. This is what happens to U2 singles that aren't released in the U.S. Usually, the video kicks things off. Then, Rock radio picks up the song. On those formats, the songs often reach #1, and then begin to fall. Now ABOY was a hard enough rocker to get significant airplay on all 4 formats, which is why it made it to #6 on Billboard's Modern Rock (Alternative format) and Mainstream Rock (Active Rock & Rock). Triple A seems to go into a void, although there are over 50 stations monitored by mediabase covering the whole U.S.

On the strength of it's performance on all 4 rock formats, ABOY did make it to 101 on Billboards Hot 100 (or 125, whatever you want to call it). However, the song did not cross over to Pop Formats and didn't do much on Adult Top 40, so it never really did anything according to Billboard.

Sometimes was another beautiful ballad by our boys but once again, it didn't "fit" nicely into any particular format beside Triple A. For a brief time, it was gaining airplay on 3 of the 4 Top Rock Formats, resulting in it getting to 29 on BB's Modern Rock. Then the song was picked up by Adult Top 40 (Hot AC), and it looked like it was destined to break through on Billboard. It spent 2 weeks at 109 on the BB Hot 125 and then jumped to 99. That's when Alternative (BB's Modern Rock) dropped the song. Hot AC picked up the slack, as well as a start on Pop radio (made it to 87 on BB), which brought Sometimes back onto the Hot 100 briefly at 97. The song went on to spend many weeks at #1 on Triple A rock (doesn't help BB at all) and many weeks at 15 on Adult Radio, which was reflected on BB.

What I'm getting at is that with no official release/promotion, radio picks up singles for airplay only at their discretion. Rock Formats still like U2 and play their songs a lot...and if the song creates enough of a buzz, then Adult Top 40 and maybe Pop Radio will pick it up. The result, though, is that the songs peak at very different times on the different formats, making it difficult for any one song to break out big on Billboard.

This is where U2 really messes up with respect to hit singles being able to help with album sales. The audiences that end up hearing their singles, a lot, are the ones who are the most likely to already have the album. Also, given U2's lack of singles strategy in the U.S., the Rock formats are more likely to try to be "first to market" with what they 1) think will be the next single, or 2) what they think sounds good on radio & makes them unique. For example, COBL was heavily played in the Northeast just a month after Sometimes showed up on the charts. Sirius Satellite had Fast Cars in their Moderate Rotation for 4 weeks back in Feb/March, and another Satellite station had OOTS in Heavy Rotation for about a month, too. These are songs that have potential to gain new audiences, but they are restricted to the formats that traditionally play to U2 audiences, anyway. It's a no-win situation.

Just to further illustrate this format-only issue in the U.S., here are some Year to Date Charts showing the most played songs of 2005 on certain formats:

If you look at FMBOQ's retail and consultant charts, what I've described IS U2's singles strategy in the U.S. For example, Sometimes was "made available for airplay" (i.e., got explicit permission and a promo single) in late January, while ABOY was the U.S. single at the time and had been released to all 4 rock formats. A month later, Sometimes was finally released for airplay on all the Rock formats, and then still 3 weeks later, it was released for Airplay on Adult Top 40. I never saw these supposed release dates for Pop Radio, but the song was picked up by enough stations to make it onto some playlists and charts.

With the commercial release of Vertigo, it became available for all formats at roughly the same time and it made a lot of news due to it's 200,000+ downloads. That was enough publicity to get the song onto rotation on every format that it could fit onto, and we all know the song could have done much better on the BB Hot 125 - seemingly everyone's standard - had downloads counted towards their chart calculations. What U2 did, though, is really fundamentally change the BB Hot 125, as once downloads were counted as any other CD single sale, we started seeing singles debuting high on the BB Hot 100, in some cases with very little airplay, and then fall off. However, that creates quite a buzz about a song. Take Speed of Sound for instance. It rode the strength of some 49,000 downloads when it was commercially released, which resulted in a #8 debut on the Hot 100. It fell steadily for a while, with enough downloads to keep it on the Hot 100. Now, the Coldplay marketing machine at full-throttle, the song is gaining airplay and STILL has a healthy number of downloads to cause it to rise on BB. That is today's recipe for success, IMO.

Finally, to the point. In the U.S., we didn't get Fast Cars, and I personally think the song is one of the best from HTDAAB. OOTS is a radio-friendly single. It's not like their saving Fast Cars for another album...and Are You gonna Wait forever has already been released as a b-side outside of the U.S. If U2 wants a "smash hit" in the U.S., they need to release OOTS, with perhaps Fast Cars and Are you gonna wait.. as b-sides. Or come up with better b-sides, or a DVD single, whatever. Release it commercially. At the same time, this 3 or 4 song single needs to be available for download. Publicize it...get the video and airplay going some 3 weeks in advance...then release it for sale. Do this in early August. OOTS A side, with Fast Cars, AYGWF, and a live version of OOTS. Easily a Top 40 hit IMO.

Same formula for early November. Release Miracle Drug in the same fasion, with Mercy, Smile, and maybe a live version as well. Top 20 hit IMO. Singles sales or download sales are irrelevant, but it would get good music on the radio and help album sales. I just don't understand why U2 can't do something like this...it's not like it takes a lot of work or any more studio time. Sadly, I don't think they'll every release singles in the U.S. unless it's a lead-off. What a shame.

Miracle Drug will never see the light of day. While it is a great song, I really don't think it will be released. I doubt there will be anymore singles released, especially in OZ, as there has been no promotion at all. If there is a fourth though, it will most likely be Crumbs. OOTS might be the single that is released just before U2's oz 'tour'.

IMO Miracle Drug will be a definate release. and there will also a 5th single (maybe not in the US, but globally)

in the UK i think they could relese a 6th and 7th single off HTDAAB, and they would all go into the top 5.

You are correct

Yep, your're right. I am beginning to think it is all about vanity, as Edge said...but U2's vanity. In countries, especially the UK, where they can get #1 and/or Top 5 singles, they have a strategy. In the U.S., they could do the very same thing, and while it might not mean a #1 hit, they would have a lot more Top 40 hits, IMO.

Cheers Ybird3k

My opinion,in particular for us market is:

i think that miracle after vertigo it is the only song already done like a single....MD is not too long ( less than 4 minutes),is epic but remembered a little bit Beautiful day (in particular for the drums sound)....for me is the best song of the bomb....and i remembered an article of hitsdailydouble.com that said very very well of this song (and i was very surprised because md wasn't the current single in that period).....They can use Miracle drug near the grammy's period (the nominations are 8 december) but perhaps after the summer they can released after City an other single (oots?) (from the end of august till october and than miracle drug for the grammiy/x.mas period).....IMO bomb hasn't got really (except vertigo) a possible hit single...only MD can become it!

"Miracle Drug" and "Original Of The Species" are the really only other tracks I could see getting radio play........"A Man And A Woman" would do well on the Adult stations, but I don't think the band will go through the trouble to cater simply to one format........I'd expect a remixed version of "Original of the Species" to hit the radio here in the US in the fall to coincide with the tour......it's got a Coldplay sort of sound and is unquestionably the most radio friendly song left on the album.....

Let's take a look at u2's playlists. They don't play OOTS very much, only here and there. If it should be a future single I wonder why they don't play this song very often. Miracle drug is on the standard playlist. I prefer OOTS but I think the 4th single will be MD.

Maybe they'll go with 6 singles from this album. Let's not forget the 3rd leg and begin 2006 Australia. So, 4th single in september, 5th in december and 6th in february/march.

1. Vertigo
2. Sometimes you can't...
3. City of blinding lights
4. Miracle drug
5. Original of the species
6. Love and peace or else (special mix/release like numb or lemon) or All because of you (ROW)

sounds good, i'd love to see a 6th single!
has anyone else EVER had 6 singles off 1 album?

Michael Jackson, i believe released 7 singles off thriller, and Bruce springsteen released 7 off Born In The USA. I think 5 singles is enough, 6 would be over doing it and may put some people off the album.

Miracle Drug followed by LOve and peace or else. but i think OOTS will probably get the nod...

I don't know for the rest of the world but here in the Netherlands Michael Jackson released 8 singles from 'Bad".

hasnt there already been 4?

Vertigo
ABOY
Sometimes
COBL

So there will probably be 1 more max, I think it will probably be Original, though I do love MD

ABOY was not released outside of North America.

In that case, I'm still waiting for the second single. Vertigo is the only US single so far, and only on vinyl at that.

Maybe they'll release vertigo for a 2nd time.... So it'll be just like the live shows.

Just whatever they release....just plug the song a little. I'm really surprised the songs have not appeared on iTunes. That alone would boost the song up some charts.

If it's going to make an impact in North America, it has to be an attention-getter...something completely different. MD and OOTS are probably my two favourite songs on the album after Vertigo, but another "sappy " song will fade quickly (MD should have been the 2nd single)

That leaves LAPOE, which is fast, rockin' and unique, yet catchy. If they could do a remix where the chorus is sung a third time instead of just twice, I strongly believe it could take off....

Michael Jackson released an insane 9 singles off 'Dangerous' -
'Black Or White'
'Remember The Time'
'In The Closet'
'Jam'
'Who Is It?'
'Heal The World'
'Give In To Me'
'Will You Be There'
'Gone Too Soon'

Also 9 off 'Bad' -
'I Just Can't Stop Loving You'
'Bad'
'The Way You Make Me Feel'
'Another Part Of Me'
'Man In The Mirror' (easily his best song ever!!)
'Dirty Diana'
'Smooth Criminal'
'Liberian Girl'
'Leave Me Alone' (only on the CD version)

Janet took 8 off 'Rhythm Nation' -
'Miss You Much'
'Rhythm Nation'
'Escapade'
'Love Will Never Do Without You'
'Come Back To Me'
'State Of The World'
'Allright'
'Black Cat'

Then 8 (9 in the UK/Aust) off of 'Janet' -
'Thats The Way Love Goes'
'If'
'Again'
'Because Of Love'
'Anytime Anyplace'
'Throb'
'What'll I Do'
'You Want This'
'Whoops Now' (UK/Aust only-is a hidden track on the album)

So the Jackson's win it. Bon Jovi did 6 off 'Keep The Faith'...

Oh, and I dont think every country got 'If God Will Send His Angels' as a single - we didnt in Australia/NZ/Japan...
