Here is where ATYCLB is still charting around the world in Week 84/85:

France #89
Canada #91
Ireland #43
United States #130

This week I did a full scale search of all worldwide charts that I had not done in over a month since it seemed that ATYCLB had disappeared from most charts except for USA, Ireland and Canada. Interestingly, this was the right week to do a search like this because I catch ATYCLB bursting into the FRENCH Top 150 for the first time in nearly 4 months. It lands at #89 this week and was not charted at all the week before. In Canada ATYCLB almost slips off the Canadian chart falling to its lowest point at #91. In Ireland ATYCLB rebounds to #43 and of course in the USA its at #130. I did not find ATYCLB on any other charts in other countries besides these. The sudden FRENCH sales increase is a surprise and a bit of a mystery. Perhaps a nationwide sale on ATYCLB. Estimated sales in France this week for ATYCLB are 2,766. Estimated sales in Ireland are 332. Canada 1,426. USA sales are 8,164 with the total now at 3,886,105. The Global total this week is 12,688 and the worldwide sales total since release for ATYCLB now stands at an estimated 10,905,340!

On a side note I discovered that The Best of 1980-1990 is charting in many countries currently. Its highest chart position is #14 in Argentina!

Hello,

There is still no sign of ATYCLB in the Dutch charts. However, The Best Of... is getting a remarkable chart run (for the moment). The album re-entered the charts 6 weeks ago and is now at #46!
Here is the total run (for its 11th chart run):
93-66-55-55-49-46-52

Nevertheless, I hope ATYCLB will return soon to the charts, but for now I'll settle with The Best Of...

C ya!

Marty

why the hell is O Brother... back in the top ten? It will not go away.

Is it because it won album of the year because if so then they did more than just rob U2 of a grammy but also of about 2 million albums sold.

o'brother is right

I think there must have been some country awards show or something, because there are a few country albums that make jumps up this week. Yes it is annoying how long that album is sticking around. Just be glad that it probably won't stay as long as Garth Brooks Ropin the Wind album which was in the top 40 for 126 weeks!

You have to remember that Soundtracks also benefit from other factors. The movie and the dvd/video release are the biggest factors. But also, a soundtrack is kind of like a new artist putting out an album, or a newer artist finally "breaking" with the general public. New artists benefit greatly from being "newly discovered" when it comes to sales. This is why you will usually see a downward trend in sales for an artist after they have been "discovered" by the general public. (ie. Britney, nsync, BSB, Hootie, Jewel, Alanis, Greenday, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, REM, etc....) The list goes on so long i could type all day. Even U2. They broke into the mainstream public with The Joshua Tree. Even though they have had major success since, and haven't suffered a HUGE drop-off in sales, they will probably never have an album reach the same amount of sales as JT. Sad but true. Luckily U2 is a global band, so even though POP sold about one-sixth of the copies that Joshua Tree has in the U.S., it was still successful worldwide, selling about 6-7 million copies.

So I know this isn't exactly answering your question, but i think it is a main factor as to why this soundtrack keeps selling well.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Very good point womanfish. Now that I think about it there was a country awards show and there was also fanfare a big country event in Nashville.

Maybe the gangs of New York soundtrack can spark some added enthusiasm for U2. But of course being on the City of Angles Soundtrack didn't help Pop out. It seems to be very difficult to find a trend in the music business. The only thing I can think of is that people and especially Americans buy on emotion and Impulse. If a new artist comes out and gets some attention people think wow something new I must buy it right away. If something like ATYCLB comes out and gets lots of attention people think U2 they are that old band aren't they?

Thank God for U2's fanbase which must be as big if not bigger than anyones in the world. People who will stick with the band no matter what. I can tell you for sure that I would buy a U2 album no matter what I heard about them. I know it is going to be quality music that I will enjoy for years to come. Not some crap that I buy so I can turn up my speakers really loud and say "look at me I have all the popular stuff."

Lastly I just wanted to thank every one for all the work you do on this forum. I have relyed on your chart news ever since the release of ATYCLB. Thursday has been one of the hilights of my week just so I can see what will happen next. It is like rooting for your favorite team it really rules.

thanks arms. I'm glad that there are others out there other than the core 5 or 6 here that really enjoy the effort and fun that chartwatching can be.

I know that my input has dropped off somewhat since ATYCLB isn't in the top 100 anymore, but i still love to watch, conjecture and answer questions about the charts.

Many kudos to all others as well, doctor, sting, popmartjian, etc...

Dr. Who,
Any chart news from Melissa yet for this week?

I agree with these sentiments 100% !!

The last few weeks haven't been very kind to ATYCLB in the U.S. In Week 81, ATYCLB dropped to #119 on the U.S. Billboard charts (down from #107 the week before) and sold 9,321 copies, down from 11,712 copies the week prior (Week 80). In Week 82, the album dropped to #131, the lowest chart position it has ever been in the U.S. However, its sales remained very steady, even increasing ever so slightly, to 9,353 copies. In Week 83, there was a mini-rebound as the album bounced up to #118 on the U.S. Billboard charts. It also increased slightly in sales to 9,415 copies. In Week 85, the album dropped again down to #130 with a mere 8,164 copies sold. This was the lowest weekly sales for the album in the U.S. since its release.

Therefore, what did Week 85 hold for ATYCLB?

I'm happy to report that U2 shines in all areas!

ATYCLB bounces up the charts once more this week. The album charts at #117, the highest position it has held since Week 80, with sales of 10,947 copies - an increase of almost 2,800 copies!

So what happened? While it is possible the showing of "Elevation" on TV had a slight effect, the jump in sales really seems to be attributed to the start of summer and kids being out of school. With students out of school and in malls, that means more albums being sold and more movies being watched.

As I scanned through the chart, I saw a lot of other older, but big-selling, albums rise similarly to ATYCLB. For example, the Beatles' "1" rose from #143 to #121 with sales of 10,785 copies, compared to 7,664 copies last week. This is an increase of almost 3,100 copies! Additionally, Jennifor Lopez's "J. Lo", while dropping on the charts, saw a sales increase of about 200 copies from last week, as it sells 8,265 copies this week. "J.Lo" has been out for 72 weeks while "1" has been out for 83 weeks. Those of you who read my weekly updates may recall that I compared ATYCLB to those same two albums last week. In other words, ATYCLB is following the same trends as other top-selling albums.

I predicted that ATYCLB would remain relatively stable for a while - throughout the summer - before it finally fell out of the Top 200. And based on the last 7 weeks, since the album dropped out of the Top 100, this appears to be true. Even though the album is out of the Top 100, it has averaged about 10,000 copies sold per week these past 7 weeks. The album has charted no lower than #131 with sales no less than 8,100 copies. Let's hope these fairly steady sales remain (or improve) as the summer season progresses. I'd really like to see ATYCLB get that 4x Platinum certification before it falls from the Top 200. :D

Chart Summary for United States

The first 85 weeks for ATYCLB on the U.S. Billboard charts are:

"POP" was out of the Top 100 after 19 weeks and "Zooropa" was out of the Top 100 after 31 weeks. ATYCLB fell out of the Top 100 after 40 weeks, however, it had returned for an additional 34 weeks.

ATYCLB spent 74 out of 85 total weeks in the U.S. Top 100; 30 weeks in the U.S. Top 40; and 3 weeks in the U.S. Top 10.

Approximate weekly sales for the first 85 weeks of ATYCLB are (rounded to nearest thousand):

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000 + 44,000 + 41,000 + 49,000 + 85,000 + 74,000 + 54,000 + 48,000 + 43,000 + 39,000 + 37,000 + 39,000 + 30,000 + 29,000 + 26,000 + 29,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 27,000 + 30,000 + 31,000 + 24,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 19,000 + 17,000 + 17,000 + 15,000 + 14,000 + 14,000 + 13,000 + 13,000 + 16,000 + 19,000 + 21,000 + 23,000 + 22,000 + 22,000 + 24,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 23,000 + 21,000 + 28,000 + 28,000 + 30,000 + 46,000 + 72,000 + 42,000 + 28,000 + 26,000 + 19,000 + 20,000 + 19,000 + 46,000 + 53,000 + 36,000 + 81,000 + 56,000 + 40,000 + 32,000 + 29,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 14,000 + 13,000 + 11,000 + 12,000 + 9,000 + 9,000 + 9,000 + 8,000 + 11,000

Exact U.S. SoundScan sales are: 3,897,052 copies (note that the sum of the weekly estimates is off from the exact total due to rounding). The album is almost exactly 103,000 copies from the 4x Platinum mark in the U.S. :D Since these sales figures were for sales through last Sunday, most likely the album has already crossed the 3.9 million copies sold plateau.

Prior U.S. ATYCLB chart data:

Highest Rankings for "Beautiful Day": #21 on the Hot 100 chart, #1 on the Dance Charts, #5 on the Modern Rock chart, #4 on the Adult Top 40 chart.

Highest Rankings for "Suck in a Moment...": #52 on the Hot 100 chart, #9 on the Adult Top 40 chart.

Highest Rankings for "Elevation": #9 on the Modern Rock chart. I *believe* #17 on the Dance charts.

Highest Rankings for "Walk On": #10 on the Modern Rock chart.

Here is a bit more U.S. chart news.

The "Elevation" VHS video rises from #17 to #15 in its 28th week on the music video charts. Thanks to the summer holidays, it too gets a sales boost. Last week, the video sold 1,124 copies. It sold 1,214 copies two weeks ago, and 1,253 copies three weeks back. This week, the VHS video sells 1,746 copies, which is an jump of over 600 copies! The DVD version of the video also sees a sales boost, although it remains at #13 on the charts (it charted at #13 last week and the week prior and at #11 three weeks ago). This week the DVD sells 1,614 copies, which is an increase of almost 600 copies from last week, where the DVD sold 1,045 copies. The DVD sold 1,137 copies two weeks ago and 1,162 copies three weeks back. After the holiday season, this video (VHS and DVD) has been sold between 2,000-4,000 copies each week. These sales, combined with the holiday season sales easily makes this a GOLD selling video (50,000 copies sold) and most-likely even Platinum (100,000 copies sold). My guess is that when U2's label recertifies ATYCLB, they will also certify this video (or at least they should!).

The "Best Of" continues to enjoy a nice little rebound up the Pop Catalog charts. It jumped from #79 to #66 two weeks ago, with sales improving to 3,835 copies two weeks ago as compared to 3,638 copies the week prior. Last week, the album improved even more, charting at #52 with 4,258 copies sold. This week, the "Best Of" charts at #45 on the Catalog charts with 5,562 copies sold. As expected, the "Best Of" will probably remain somewhere in the Top 100 on the Catalog charts for some time, slowly selling several hundred thousand copies a year. :D

The "Best Of" is not the only U2 album on the U.S. Pop Catalog charts. The "Best Of - Limited Edition" (the one with b-sides) charts at #184 this week, with sales of 2,552 copies. Last week, this album only sold 1,810 copies, so this is a significant improvement. The "Joshua Tree" made an appearace at #181 two weeks ago, selling 2,179 copies. It sold 2,013 copies the week prior, just missing the Top 200. JT sold 2,016 copies last week, once again just missing a chance to chart in the Top 200 on the Catalog charts. This week, JT sells 2,503 copies, enough to chart at #192. I estimate that JT is selling slightly over 2,000 copies a week - even if it doesn't chart. Not bad for a 15 year old album, but not always enough to keep it in the Top 200 on the Pop Catalog charts.

Note that all of U2's items that charted saw sales increases of 500 to almost 3,000 copies more as compared to last week. Aren't the summer holidays great? :D

As always, I thank Melissa for sending me the SoundScan report so I could present these accurate numbers.

?

thanks a ton doctor! great seeing the full chart.

Can anyone explain why Bob Seeger's greatest hits are almost always in the top 25? It boggles my mind the way some of these older artists sell who really IMO weren't that great to begin with.

Anyway. Doctor, would you mind posting the chart run for Achtung baby? I don't know how long you have it for (if you have it for after it fell off the top 100) but I would like to compare the run to ATYCLB and look at a few things. Thanks in advance.

GREAT NEWS DR. WHO! Thanks again for the chart info and of course thank Melissa! I do think that the ABC Family did play a role despite the rise by many titles on the chart. J. Lo still gets measurable radio and video play and the Beatles are a greatest hits album. The only thing ATYCLB had going for it last week was the ABC family special. I'd say it accounted for at least 1,000 of the nearly 3,000 increase. Now if the album could just maintain this exact sales level for the next two months, it will hit 4 times platinum in the USA.

Whats going on with Bob Dylans "Blonde on Blonde"? Last week it was at 3,000 copies on the Catalog chart and this week it jumps to #1 with sales of 24,408 copies!?!? Thats enough to rank at #50 on the Billboard 200!!!?

I highly doubt it is a misprint. Rather, I think it is a difference in what SoundScan considers "Catalog" and what Billboard considers "Catalog."

Hello Doc,

Could you please clarify this statement? Why would Billboard not consider this a catalog album? Blonde On Blonde was released in 1966, so you cannot call it a new album. The album also isn't in the Billboard 200, so where does it belong?

C ya!

Marty (who also owns BOB and thinks it's a great album)

Nope, I can't clarify! LOL! I'm serious. :) I just doubt that SoundScan would make a misprint of that nature. After all, SoundScan charges a fortune for their data. However, whatever happened to have caused that type of jump in Dylan's album, obviously BillBoard didn't recognize it. Also, if you look carefully at the SoundScan data and Billboard's chart, you'll see a column on both tables that lists how many weeks an album has been on the chart. Often SoundScan's numbers in that column differ considerably from BillBoard's numbers. Therefore, clearly there is some sort of difference between how SoundScan and Billboard tabulate that particular chart.

Hi Womanfish. I only tracked AB for a year. You can find that data here. During that time, it did not fall out of the Top 100. STING2 did a more thorough analysis of several albums, like JT, which you can find here. However, I don't think STING2 looked up the full chart run of AB, "Zooropa" or "Pop." Perhaps if I get some time I'll do that some day... ;)

Perhaps there is a mistake with Soundscan and Soundscan warned Billboard about it, so Billboard did not print the Dylan title. Mistakes have happened before. If you work at a store that has soundscan, you can scan the same album over and over again and it gets counted each time. Soundscan keeps track of local and store data, so it usually detects these huge jumps in sales from one store and sends people to investigate. I doubt that is what happened here with Bob but I'm not entirely sure.

I see no reason for such a large jump by Bob Dylan on the charts. This could only happen from some type of major TV appearence or promotion and I did not see anything on Dylan last week. This is a bit of the mystery but not known to most, because most people while they have access to billboard do not have access to soundscan like us, thanks to Mellissa and Dr. Who. Perhaps next weeks billboard magazine will have something to say though.

In Canada, in Week 85, ATYCLB jumps up from #91 to #78. Here is a snippent from JamMusic Charts:

ChartAttack: U2 still selling well in Canada (6-21-2002)
Condensed from ChartAttack:

Other notable debuts come from wild-angry-woman turned
slightly-pissed-off mother, Holly McNarland with her Home Is
Where My Feet Are at #18 and popular punkers New Found Glory
at #21. Movers and shakers include Dirty Vegas who move up from
#87 to #62, U2's All That You Can't Leave Behind STILL continues
to sell close to a thousand records a week as it goes up to #78 from
#91 and White Stripes move from #93 to #81. DJ Shadow has the
biggest drop of the week as Private Press moves an ugly 53 spots
from its debut at #30 to #83. Yikes.

In addition to the nearly 11,000 copies ATYCLB sold in the U.S., another 1,000 copies were sold in Canada. And while ATYCLB might not be charting elsewhere, I would claim that at least several thousand more were sold throughout the world. :D

In other news, while ATYCLB is not in the Australian Top 50, the "Best Of" made a slight resurrgence, charting at #36 last wee and #43 this week. It has spent a total of 86 weeks in the Australian Top 50.
