Also, what is ABOY's mainstream rock position? It was 36 two weeks ago, but what about last week and this week?

Mainstream Rock Tracks - All Because Of You - #30
(08/01/2005 - Run: 39-36-*30*)

(Still) I don't have all the charts for this week, but I will get the full report soon...

I hope those figures are false. It would be downright embarassing for U2 to have albums released back in `83, `87, and `88 match or outsell POP in the 90s! Wow!

Cheers,

J

The figures for WAR, Joshua Tree and Rattle And Hum are higher than what is listed for sales from 1991 on because soundscan only had limited coverage of the market in its early years. By 1997 when POP was released, over 85% of the market was being covered. WAR, Joshua Tree, and Rattle and Hum all sold more albums than POP in the 1990s in the UNITED STATES. Outside the United States, only the Joshua Tree of the three albums above did better than POP in the 1990s.

It's also worth noting that the eighties albums had a seven year advantage on Pop.

And Pop had the advantage that it was new. Which hasn't really mattered because those other three albums have all been selling more week by week than Pop for years now. Pop's probably their worst selling catalog release.....

On the note about younger fans......I really don't see it working.....people in my age group (I'm a 19 year old college student) still think of U2 as an older act.....all of the rock fans that I know here (practically everyone) all are more into the indie scene rather than U2......if anything, the iTunes ads simply helped tell their fanbase that they had a new album, rather than suddenly sparked great interest in the younger crowd.

Soldatti,

Thanks for all the detailed chart stats. I think I speak for many of us "chart watchers" in saying this, as our official sources are few and it's great to get the "rest of the story" when you post.

Cheers!

Yep, I'd like to add my thanks as well. I love reading all the statistics Soldatti provides. It's wonderful to see how well HTDAAB is doing on the Internet Albums chart.

Oops.

Somehow, I nearly forgot about the charts this week. I was a wee bit busy with work, etc. So here's a short version of my weekly report. And yes, the charts are still compiled by the Mega Charts (http://www.megacharts.nl).
To begin with that subject, I just learned that since a while the Dutch charts span the week from Friday to Thursday. This might seem a strange decision, especially when albums are officially released on a Monday (so their first week officially won't have any weekend sales in them). But considering the fact that newly released albums are available on a Friday/Saturday it actually pre-empts any street date violations. So this explains to me why the album debuted on the chart a week earlier (due to street date violations). Those street date violations already contributed to the first regular chart week.
Anyway, so much for the chart technicalities, now some U2 related trivia. Like last week, the album dropped another spot to #6. While the album is slowly sliding down, it is still in the top 10. And that isn't bad at all.
Here is the chart run for How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (29-11-2004)
1-1-2-3-4-4-5-6

From the same source that gave me the album chart info I got some info about the singles charts. Here, the chart week is also from Friday to Thursday. The published chart is based on the sales of one week (2/3rd) and airplay on a select number of stations (actually, only the 3FM radio station and the MTV TV channel) (1/3rd). Not published to the general audience there's also a sales only list. At times I may be able to get some info from it, but I fear not too often.
Vertigo is showing some remarkable longlivety. While its #2 debut was its peak and it has been dropping since, it's still in the top half of the charts. This week the song stays at #23. It's now already longer in the charts than Electrical Storm and next week it'll beat the stay in the charts of Walk On and that was in a period when the Dutch charts were still a Top 100 (it's a Top 50 now).
Chart run Vertigo (15-11-2004)
2-3-3-10-13-18-21-23-23

The current #1 album is Hotel New York by Anouk. It's her 6th week at the top. The current #1 single is Als Je Iets Kan Doen by Artiesten Voor Azië, a charity single for the victims of the tsunami.

C ya!

Marty

Vertigo has finally been broken - it sure lingered around the top 40 far longer than I expected.

Over to you now ABOY - next week is a very big chart for you to make the top 100. I also suspect the tour announcement may help sales as well. U2 have been laying low since Christmas - time to tune up.

And ditto with my thanks to Soldatti for the chart info - we all appreciate it
