Here is ATYCLB chart performance around the world for week 70/71!

United States #10
United Kingdom #74
Denmark #76
Netherlands #51
France #122
Ireland #10
Switzerland #87
Canada #8
Brazil #36
Australia ?

ATYCLB sold about 103,526 this week worldwide. 81,287 copies of that number were sold in the USA. USA sales now stand at 3,602,429 copies sold. Worldwide sales are now estimated at 10,526,944 copies! The Australian charts have not been posted for this week yet. ATYCLB was at #19 on the OZ charts last week.

The first 71 weeks for ATYCLB on the U.S. Billboard charts are:

3-5-12-22-23-24-20(1xP)-18-22-16
19-19(2xP)-25-33-37-35-11(3xGrammy)-15-25-31
38-40-42-45-45-48-50-48-50-58
60-53-50-66-74-82-81-89-88-99
105-106-108-104-78-66-53-50-57-55
54-58(3xP)-62-67-80-77-78-76-69-71
74-58-39-56-61-66-25(SBowl)-26-28-10(4xGrammy)-17

"POP" was out of the Top 100 after 19 weeks and "Zooropa" was out of the Top 100 after 31 weeks. ATYCLB fell out of the Top 100 after 40 weeks, however, it has now returned for an additional 26 weeks. It has spent 67 out of 71 total weeks in the U.S. Top 100; 28 weeks in the U.S. Top 40; and 3 weeks in the U.S. Top 10. What's impressive is that the elusive third week in the U.S. Top 10 came 70 weeks after the album was released.

Approximate weekly sales for the first 71 weeks of ATYCLB are (rounded to nearest thousand):

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000 + 44,000 + 41,000 + 49,000 + 85,000 + 74,000 + 54,000 + 48,000 + 43,000 + 39,000 + 37,000 + 39,000 + 30,000 + 29,000 + 26,000 + 29,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 27,000 + 30,000 + 31,000 + 24,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 19,000 + 17,000 + 17,000 + 15,000 + 14,000 + 14,000 + 13,000 + 13,000 + 16,000 + 19,000 + 21,000 + 23,000 + 22,000 + 22,000 + 24,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 23,000 + 21,000 + 28,000 + 28,000 + 30,000 + 46,000 + 72,000 + 42,000 + 28,000 + 26,000 + 19,000 + 20,000 + 19,000 + 46,000 + 53,000 + 36,000 + 81,000 + 56,000

Exact U.S. SoundScan sales are: 3,658,631 copies (note that the sum of the weekly estimates is off from the exact total due to rounding).

Highest Rankings for "Beautiful Day": #21 on the Hot 100 chart, #1 on the Dance Charts, #5 on the Modern Rock chart, #4 on the Adult Top 40 chart.

Highest Rankings for "Suck in a Moment...": #52 on the Hot 100 chart, #9 on the Adult Top 40 chart.

Highest Rankings for "Elevation": #9 on the Modern Rock chart. I *believe* #17 on the Dance charts.

Highest Rankings for "Walk On": #10 on the Modern Rock chart.

I have a request.

I've just posted the "full" report for the U.S. data. Some of you have kept tabs for the U.K. and the Netherlands. Could we, in this thread, piece together the FULL chart reports for ATYCLB (from week one to present) for as many countries as we can?

I kept up through Week 52 for Canada, the U.S., Australia, the U.K. and Ireland. Is anyone willing to go back through the threads and piece together all the missing weeks for these and other countries? Since ATYCLB is clearly going to stick around a bit longer, I think we should have a more thorough chart report for it.

In piecing together the data, we should list the weeks when ATYCLB hit a certain milestone (like 1x Platinum, 2x Platinum, etc.) for each country. Also, if one could list the highest chart position for each single in a given country, that would really be beneficial.

Thanks!

I'm actually surprised to see this drop. U2 performs at the Super Bowl, wins 4 Grammies, then 8 Irish awards - all in a row. I would have thought that these three rather monumentous events - even though they weren't in the U.K. - would have carried the album up the U.K. charts again, at least into the Top 40. I would have thought that the news that ATYCLB hit the Top 10 again in the U.S. would have at least kept the album stagnant. That said, I can understand if the Super Bowl and Grammy Awards did little for the U.K. public, but I'm very much surprised to see the album slip back into the 70's on the U.K. charts after winning 8 Irish awards. Hmmm....

In Australia, ATYCLB rises from #19 to #13!! All the more reason why I want to gather all the chart news from around the world for this album - it just keeps going and going!

I had thought one year's worth of chart news would be it - I was wrong! It's nice to be wrong this way!

Dr. Who,
In this forum, all the info before Week 38 was deleted by Elvis, so you would have to find an update after week 38 to show all the weeks for the country in question. Billboard magazine would only show weeks in the top 10 and top 20 for various countries, but they could be obtained. Some countries might have the info stored on their respective chart websites but I'd have to check on that.
I was just thinking that if sales of ATYCLB are strong this week in the USA that we may say 4 times platinum very soon here in the USA. When the album has sold 3.6 million and 80,000 copies are leaving stores per week, music retailers are going to be ordering a lot of albums to make sure they fully stocked for the next month. ATYCLB could see 4 times platinum as early as April.

Hey,
I was wondering, has anyone been looking for movements by WALK ON on the US charts? I'd be very interested to see if it appears anywhere in the next 2-3 weeks, as it has SUPPOSEDLY been re-released to the US market. Fingers crossed!
Bless ya!
WHYWHY

Ok, so this is what I've gathered from both DocWHo's posts and mine, and u2opia.

Here's it's run on the ARIAs:

1-1-2-3-3-3-3(TP)-3-3-6
9-12-15-13-14-14-9-8-7-8(4P)
6-6-6-5-9-12-16-18-24-25
29-27-29-30-27-28-27-33-29-38
36-39-43-47-46-48-out-out-out-33
35-36-43-44-39-out-out-out-out-out
out-29-28-37-out-out-out-out-46-19
13

After 71 weeks, ATYCLB is at No.13 and has spent 58 weeks of that 71 on the Aussie charts, 10 weeks in the Top 5, 20 in the Top 10, and 30 in the Top 20. Good, nice rounded Numbers!
biggrin.gif

As you can see by where the album was certified as Triple Platinum and then 4X platinum, it would probably be around 6X platinum by now if it was investigated. It probably won't be until the NEXT album that U2 will ask for a re-certification....if that's what they do...

Here are the top positions for the singles that have been released to Australia, plus the first few weeks on the charts:

BD- No.1
Chart run: 1-3-3-4-7-6-9-14......(rest is unknown)

STUCK- No.3
Chart run: 3-7-11.....(rest is unknown)

ELEVATIOn- No. 6
Chart run: 6- (I did not monitor this single whatsoever)

WALK ON:No. 9 (No. 1 on HMV charts)
chart run: 9-21-32-?-34-34-40-out

HMV chart run (HMV TOP 40) for WALK ON:
chart run : 1-7-12-26-?-28-31-38-out

Chart Run of the Elevation video/DVD:

Video charts:
1-1-1-2-4-3-4-3-6-9

DVD charts:
1-1-1-2-6-5-4-5-7-11

Both have been on the charts for 10 weeks now. Although it seems a lot longer. I'm sure they were released at the very end of November last year. So that's 4 weeks from last year, 4 weeks from Jan, 4 weeks from Feb and at least 2 weeks from March. I think i may have missed two weeks right around Christmas/New Years. Sorry! But I'm sure you can presume that they were both around 3-5 on the charts. So they should probably look like this

Video charts:
1-1-1-2-?-?-?-?-4-3
4-3-6-9

DVD charts:
1-1-1-2-?-?-?-?-6-5
4-5-7-11

So sorry about that. I BELIEVE THE ABOVE 2 CHARTS FOR THE ELEVATION VIDEO IS CORRECT, BUT I LEFT THE OTHER 2 ABOVE, JUST IN CASE
wink.gif

So, after some 71 weeks, U2 is at No. 13, with no single on the charts, and the vid/DVD hovering around No. 10. Things look good, but i think we need a new single. HOWEVER, if Walk On has been re-released in the US, U2 SHOULD NOT release a new single in Oz.....but i guess it's not up to them either is it? It's all up to Interscope these days, which sucks
mad.gif
, but i guess that's life!

Bless ya, and Bless U2.

I'm looking forward to an even more exciting Week 71 of chart news. I hadn't felt that excited about charts for many weeks, back from when ATYCLB was a brand new album. And the charts thread was not nearly as long for a LONG time. I'm so happy :))

Andy

With .03% of sales in on Hitsdailydouble.com U2 is at #14 with sales of 20 !!!

Sorry. I couldn't help it. I have never caught the hits chart with only .03% of sales in.

Germany:

ATYCLB's run on Germany's album chart (x = out of Top 100):
1-1-3-4-11-17-21-20-21-22-
24-29-29-30-33-22-20-29-33-32-
42-58-68-61-66-68-86-89-100-x-
x-x-x-47-34-31-39-46-44-49-
71-76-82-97-x(didn't re-enter since)

ATYCLB was certified as Platinum and Gold in September 2001. It was the only record listed as "Platinum" AND "Gold" on the chart back then, which is a bit surprising (other "Platinum" records were just listed as "Platinum").
I think this means that more than 450.000 copies have been sold here: 300.000 (Platinum) + another 150.000 (Gold).
Actual sales of ATYCLB in Germany might be a bit higher: 500.000 - 550.000 (just short of Double-Platinum).

The singles:
Beautiful Day: #7 (#7-32-33-52-63-74-75-72-85)
Stuck: #40 (#40-73-73-87-88-99)
Elevation: #31 (#31-47-43-39-52-60-69-86-82)
Walk On: #54 (#54-81-83-91)

And if I extrapolate that I expect that they will have sold 66,666 albums for the week and fall to #16 on billboard.

With 28.41% in, U2 are at 16 with sales of 17,055. Loking like just under 60,000 sales then (later figures ususally have U2 with less of a share).

Mike

With 84% in on hits, U2 is at #18 with 47,101 in sales. They hung around the Top 10 up through 55%, but then started dropping. On a completely annoying and frustrating note, "O, Brother.." is once again fighting for the top spot with a new release. This time it is Brandy's new cd. The cd will at least be #2 if not possibly #1. This makes me feel like puking. Maybe it's because I am tired and it's noon and I haven't eaten anything since yesterday.

aaron

And so the fall begins...

All numbers are in at hits and U2 drops from 8 to 19 with sales of 55,210. Since hits is usually off by a few, I would say U2 did not make the Billboard Top 20. Unless the new Walk On gets major airplay or a new single hits the air, I would say that this is the beginning of the final days of ATYCLB in the Top 100. No more touring in the US for this album and more than likely no more TV appearances of any kind on US television should allow the cd to slowly slide down the charts. Since it appears as though the band is taking a break for a while, maybe they will release a new single other than the new Walk On. We'll see...

aaron

The final numbers are just in from HITS. U2 fall outside the top 10 and drop to #19 with 55,210 in sales. However, HITS is often off compared to SoundScan and the difference between #16 and #21 is only 3500 copies, so U2 might rise some positions.
On another (happy) note, the O Brother... soundtrack is #1 in HITS.
wink.gif
It beat Brandy's debut (albeit with only 4500 copies). If this album is also #1 at SoundScan, it will be the first time this soundtrack is #1, more than 65 weeks after its debut.
smile.gif
No, I don't have the soundtrack myself, but it's nice to see that these oldies can beat the young flavour of the month. (I've seen Emmylou Harris is on that soundtrack, so I do support its rise to the top)

I'm a little unsettled but the large drop in hits because I expected the album to stay steady this week or even go up a little. If HITS numbers are correct, ATYCLB needs to sell about 343,000 more copies to get to the 4 million mark in the USA. I hope it does not drop to fast so it will achieve this while it is still in the top 100 and everyone can see it.
I agree that now that U2 are on vacation for rest of the year or recording a new album, that the promotion phase of ATYCLB is coming to an end. I hope Interscope and Universal promote it up to the two year mark with two more singles and video's for each. I feel that KITE is the best song on the album and one of the 20 best U2 songs ever! I really think they should release and feel it can do good business and would be an award winner at next years Grammy's. I already have a vision of what the video for this song would look like. I hope they do release it.

I think that ATYCLB is going to sink FAST!! I really don't see it being in the top 100 past 75 or 76 weeks if all stays the same. I am doubting a new single as I think they may realize that they don't want to overextend themselves on this album. One of the most important thing any management team can do is realize when to keep pushing and when to say we have to stop now so people will be left wanting more.

I think it's fine for them to step back now and let this one ride out. I may be wrong, it could sell 20-25,000 copies steady for the next few months just on good reputation, but I am a little doubtful.

If they do release another single I would have to say IALW or Wild Honey. These just are great radio songs and fit wonderfully with the Spring/summer season. I LOVE Kite, in fact it is my favorite song of all time, and that is saying a LOT. But I don't know how radio/the general public would receive it. Who knows, I thought Elevation would blow up on all radio formats. Boy was I wrong.
smile.gif

If there is a fast drop could take a year or longer to sell 343,000 copies. I hope that does not happen.

Hello,

The Dutch album charts are updated again. Sorry, but I don't have much time to discus everything, so I'll start directly. Here are the results of the Dutch jury (Numbers courtesy of Mega Top 100, http://web.planet.nl/music/charts/megatop100/ ).
ATYCLB rises one position to #50 in its 70th chart week. As I said last week, the Grammy awards did not have much influence on U2's record sales here. On the very quiet chart this week (only 5 debuts, of which 4 are a re-entry) U2 also held steady. Hopefully they can keep their position when there are more new entries in the coming weeks.
The total run of ATYCLB so far is:
1-1-1-1-1-3-3-3-6-7
6-5-7-6-6-6-5-6-1-2
8-12-16-25-30-36-38-40-45-48
49-43-39-39-45-42-36-27-15-7
6-6-14-25-29-39-37-43-55-47
38-65-60-66-69-80-81-65-57-61
44-41-44-41-56-58-52-45-51-50
(all information prior to week 40 with many thanks to Flying Padre Jr.)

The Best Of 1980-1990 drops a bit further as it falls 3 positions to #60. It's now on the charts for 116 weeks. These past weeks I was guessing that The Best Of... had its 4th chart run, but I was wrong. This week I got some information about the albums with the most entries in the chart and The Best Of... is one of them (full list below). The album has already entered the Dutch charts 10 times!
The Best Of 1980-1990's (10) chart run is:
86-46-37-45-62-57-61-56-63-45
47-64-63-65-74-73-53-57-60

As for the albums with the most entries in the Dutch charts, here is the list for those interested:
PAUL SIMON: "Graceland" 13 times
ANDR? HAZES: "Al 15 jaar gewoon Andr?" (Dutch album) 12x
DIRE STRAITS: "Alchemy live" 12x
JEWEL: "Pieces of you" 11x
DE DIJK: "Het beste van" (Dutch album) 11x
ALANIS MORISSETTE: "Jagged little pill" 10x
U2: "The best of 1980 ? 1990" 10x

The #1 album in the Netherlands is still the best of by the most popular Dutch singer of the last few years.

There are no U2 singles on the singles chart.

As for Doctorwho's request, I do not have any information about milestones for the album. All I know is that it was certified 2x platinum (more than) a year ago and has not been recertified since. However, as it was in the top 10 of best selling albums for 2 years in a row, I think it should be at least 4x platinum.

Here are the peak positions of the singles on the Dutch chart:
Beautiful Day: #1 (U2's first #1!)
Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of #12
Elevation #1
Walk On #8

C ya!

Thanks everyone for the other country updates!

I think we should create a separate thread where one person is responsible for a given country. For example, PopMartijn, you've been doing the Dutch charts for so long now - you will just keep monitoring them.

In this one thread, one post will be Irish charts. The next post is the U.K. charts. The next post is the U.S. charts, and so on.
The person responsible for a given country will then just update that given chart for a given week. This way, we have one source where we can go to see current chart news for any country on a given week.

Now, that's not to say we should stop doing weekly updates. These weekly updates allow for discussion and other requests as well as chart news. However, in that thread for charts, ONLY chart information should be posted there. If someone posts a question there, I will ask a moderator to move it out of that thread.

Sound good?

Hello,

I just got the new Soundscan information. Indeed, U2 does drop out of the top 10. Last week ATYCLB sold 56,202 copies, bringing the album to #16. Total Soundscan sales for ATYCLB are now 3,658,631.

For those who are dooming that the album is going down fast, please remember that this is the highest one week sales for the album in 10 weeks, excluding last week of course. So I don't think the album will be out of the top 100 soon, it's just that they will go to their normal levels of 20 - 25K per week.

As HITS predicted (correctly) the O Brother... soundtrack has its first #1, 63 weeks after its debut! Good for them!

I have now updated the U.S. info. above for Week 71 - however, the album charted at #17, not #16.

If ATYCLB follows the same post-Grammy sales decline that it had last year, it will take 10 more weeks before it crosses the 4 million mark in sales.

Given that the album is no longer "new" as it was at last year's Grammies, I think it could take twice as long to reach this sales point. 20 weeks is approximately 5 months. If this holds, we should see the 4x Platinum before the summer ends.

Therefore, the quickest we should see 4x Platinum is by the beginning of June and the latest should be by the beginning of September.

Of course, this is assuming that there another single isn't released and that the album gradually declines down the charts as it has been doing in the past. A new single could boost sales significantly. Alternatively, if the album uncharacteristically plummets from the charts, it might take much longer for the 4x Platinum. My estimate is closer to 15 weeks from now - putting us in July. Maybe the album will be 4x Platinum certified just in time for my July birthday!

Only 341,369 copies to go before ATYCLB hits 4 million in sales in the USA! I wonder who will be the largest group of people buying this album in the next few weeks, Virgin U2 buyers or fans from a long time ago "born again"?

Dr. Who,
Popmartian said #16 for ATYCLB in his post while you have #17 on your list at the top. Which is it? Also, was the full soundscan data posted in the "Velvet Rope" forum on that site? I was not able to find it.

It seemed to take "forever" for ATYCLB to go from 2x to 3x Platinum. However, thanks to the holiday season, the Super Bowl performance and now the Grammy performance, the trip to 4x Platinum seems to be going much faster. Hopefully, the album sales will hold on strong enough to cross the 3.7 million copies sold barrier next week. Then it'll be under 300K before 4x Platinum!

I remember writing in this forum that I thought this album had a good chance for 4x Platinum when it was first released. Back then, a person "in the know" claimed that ATYCLB should reach 2x Platinum but then hit only 3x Platinum at best. How nice to prove him wrong!

Yeah, I remember thinking - definitely 2 times platinum, probably 3 after all was said and done, and in my highest hopes 4 times platinum. That seems to be about right. I really think that there will be 4 million shipped out there pretty soon. when they will actually do the audit and certify is a different story.

Looks like my highest hope will become a reality!
