That first number is the weeks on the chart. Why is the Dixie Chicks' album still in the Top 200? It's been charting well below #100 for the last three weeks and it has been out for well over 2 years. According to the rules I've read, it should have shifted to the Catalog charts by now. I know that SoundScan records Catalog data too, so why is this album still in the Top 200?

I don't know for sure, but it might be that the Chicks still have a single out from that album. I remember reading a couple of months ago on Billboard.com that somebody had the same question. IIRC, the answer was that a record company can ask SoundScan/Billboard not to move the album to the catalog chart as the record company maybe expects a rise in the coming weeks due to a new single.
If anyone can check if this is the case with the Chicks (a new single out from that album), we might know the answer.

[added]

I just did the check myself. The Dixie Chicks are #7 on the Hot Country chart with a single (album cut) that appears on Fly.

Well...

Could you please post the whole info for the Catalog chart? Or, if you want to you may also email it to me (popmartijn@hotmail.com).
Please, please, pretty please?

Hello,

I just want to add that total sales for ATYCLB are now 3,602,429.
At the beginning of this year I made the prediction that ATYCLB will reach 4x platinum before the end of June (either scanned or shipped). Now I want to make another prediction (and not a very hard one in my eyes): ATYCLB will sell more than a million copies in 2002 alone, making it the third year in a row that it has sold more than 1 million copies a year.
(for reference, at the end of 2001 US sales were a bit less than 3,3 million).

C ya!

Marty

P.S. Thanks Doc for the SoundScan request. But be careful, they don't like persons continually begging for SoundScan stats.

I'm so happy to hear this.

Great News!

I will post all the Catalog info. later (I have that at home - I'm at work now), but I just noticed a few more nice things about this week's Billboard charts.

In the Catalog area, U2's "The Best Of" is at #3. However, it did indeed see a decent surge in sales - close to that of Creed's "Human Clay." More importantly, "Human Clay" was finally knocked from the #1 spot on the Catalog charts (by Willie Nelson) and its sales have finally started to fall from the 20,000 copies/week area (down to around 13,000 copies).

More important though is the fact that "The Best Of" is now certified as DOUBLE PLATINUM!!!! That means that both the 1-CD version and the 2-CD version are Doulbe Platinum!

"Boy," "October," and "Pop" are the only U2 albums that have not gone multi-platinum in the U.S.

DoctorWho,
Can you tell me where Neil Finn's AMAZING new live CD "7 Worlds Collide" ended up. It was floating in the 80s and 90s on Amazon so I'm imagining somewhere in the 150 vicinity on the top 200.

(I'm a big Crowded House fan and Neil's new live CD featuring Eddie Vedder, Johnny Marr (Smiths), and 1/2 of Radiohead is incredible).

THANKS!!!

I'm sorry to say, but Neil Finn's CD did not enter the top 200 (at least, as far as I could see...)

Dr. Who,
I'd like to see the Catalog chart here as well. Cut and paste it if you get the chance. Remember Best Of...with the B-sides is double platinum, but its two disc which means its really only platinum, since RIAA counts each individual disc.
Thats great that the single disc best of is now double platinum, although I think the entire U2 catalog would sell better if we did not have these best of... albums.

Gee, thanks for that......now even though we like to believe that over 4 million were sold, we know that only 3 million of the Best Ofs have been sold.

Anyway, thanks for that piece of info again STING, helps to see the big picture.

WHYWHY

[This message has been edited by WHYWHY (edited 03-07-2002).]

Well Best of both special edition and regular sold about 10 million worldwide in the first year. There have been 2 million in sales in Europe since the first year and 1.5 million in the USA. That means the total for best of...1980-1990 is over 13.5 million worldwide! 3 million of that in the USA!

Neil Finn's album sold 3,047 copies last week, placing it at #45 on the Top New Artist Albums chart. Those sales were also strong enough to place it at #17 on the Alternative New Artist Albums chart.

Finn also sold 659 copies of the DVD version of the CD (it has the same name), ranking it at #46 on the DVD Music Videos chart.

Keep in mind, these are U.S. sales only.

Here is the full Catalog SoundScan chart for this week. I'm just "cutting and pasting" so I hope this looks acceptable. U2 is present three times on this chart: The now Double Platinum single-CD version of "The Best Of," the 2-CD version of the "Best Of" and JT.

Are we absolutely sure about this ? I don't think ANY other country would count the sale of 1 double album as 2 CDs. I thought the totalling of sales went of the catalogue number of the disc being sold ?. If your view is right then total sales in any one week would always be an even number - has anyone checked this ????

I have just checked, and this week the double CD sold 2963 - so that would kinda go against the theory that 1 sale of this version of Best Of equals 2 CD sales. So its 4 million then ?!

Mike

Actually what I said is correct. In the USA, the RIAA certifies albums as either Gold, Platinum or Multi platinum. RIAA counts both disc in a two CD set towards any of the awards.
SOUNDSCAN is different. Soundscan only tracks sales to consumers at retail outlets. Soundscan does not certify albums platinum or multi-platinum and only counts the package and not individual disc.
RIAA tracks all shipments of the album including to retailers. A shipment is a sale to a retailer or other outlet. The shipment figure will always be slightly higher than the soundscan figure. As it reflects all copies sold and in stock at the record store or business.
Once Best off version 2 hits triple platinum, that will actually on be 1.5 million in shipments in the USA.
The RIAA is probably the only accounting firm that does this and IFPI which certifies sales in Europe does not do this. The best of... stands at 6 million copies sold in Europe.
THANKS Dr. Who for posting the Catalog chart!

Don't confuse SoundScan with the RIAA certifications. SoundScan reports sales of a UNIT. So a double CD still counts as a single unit of sale. The RIAA, on the other hand, will certify a double CD as double sales. If one releases a double live album and ships a million units to stores, that will be certified as 2x Platinum in the U.S. However, it will be reported, to the best of my knowledge, as a million units scanned by SoundScan. Yes, it is confusing and silly.

Looking promising for sales this week in the US, that's if the on-line charts are indicative:

CDNow -3 (Where Elevation is at 7 in the overall (incl movies etc) chart
Walmart -4
Tower - 5
Amazon - 6

BTW, ATYCLB also rises 3 places to 36 in Brazil !!
