On thing to remember though is that every year the market declines, so it gets harder and harder for albums to sell what they did the year before let alone 3 years ago. This makes it inaccurate to compare the sales success of individual albums from 2006 vs. those in 2009 because of the dramatically different market conditions.

The 2009 results look great for U2. Two albums expected to sell well both get released on Friday May 15. Green Day's new one under Warner Brothers Group VS. Enimem's new one under Universal Music Group. By then NLOTH should be getting close to 3 million in sales worldwide. No one knows how well or fast the Green Day or Eminem releases will sell, but its likely that U2 will still have the biggest selling album worldwide for 2009, at the half way point for the year at the end of June.

I think you've also got to remember that the albums released four years ago have had four years to sell

The biggest selling album in 2006 sold 5.69, the biggest selling album in 2007 sold 5, and I think Coldplay were around 6 million for 2008. So if U2 hit 5 million by year end they're up there with the biggest bands.

Will this album hit the one million mark in the US before it fizzles out? i hope to keep the streak of every studio album doing at least platinum going. If magnificent is only a moderate hit, this should happen? maybe? For me, as long as they achieve that goal i think anything they accomplish after that is gravy. I also note that the last album they did that only went 1x platinum was pop. But we didn't have legal/illegal downloading in 1997. I wonder what NLOTH would have sold so far in the us if there wasn't downloading.

If everyone who wanted the album actually had to buy it, it probably would have sold 2 to 3 million in the USA by now. In 2009, the majority of people don't actually buy music, they are able to obtain it for free.

I love how Maoilbheannacht continues to spin every single sentence I state that proves him wrong.

He stated:

"Nickleback is struggling to sellout amphitheaters at low ticket prices and is unable to."

And all I did was post recent Billboard Boxscores PROVING he is wrong. NONE of Nickelback's ticket prices are "low" in comparison to most tours out there.
In fact, some of U2's upcoming shows will have average prices that will be basically in line with Nickelback's. And NONE of Nickelback's arena show capacities are "low" in comparison to most arena tours, since they've utilized the standard 180, 240 or 270 degree end stage configuration setups.

------------------------------------------------

Also, I love how the U2 sheep on this forum solely blame NLOTH's sales failure on downloading, when in reality, it's also to due to the fact that many U2 fans just don't like NLOTH.

At least you can read his post.

Actually a lot of U2 fans like NLOTH so you are wrong there. It has received a much better reception on fan forums than its predecessor. It's limited success THUS FAR can probably be contributed to the fact the band are a generation older than the market and that selling albums in such an age bracket proves more and more difficult.

Thats 1 soldout show out of 14 listed on ticketmaster. The single soldout show has Hinder, Papa Roach and Saving Abel opening for them at the same ticket prices which average about $55 dollars for the venue.

And all I did was post recent Billboard Boxscores PROVING he is wrong.

I responded because what you posted did not disprove what I had said. Under your own definition of "sellout", those shows were not "soldout". In addition, some of the shows you listed were soldout at capacities that were well below those in a 270 degree configeration.

NONE of Nickelback's ticket prices are "low" in comparison to most tours out there

Average ticket price in 2008 was $69.50. Average ticket price for Nickelback for several of these shows is around $55 and NONE were at $69.50 or above. Depends on your definition of "low" of course. But its a fact that all of Nickelback's shows have average ticket prices, that were BELOW the industry average.

In fact, some of U2's upcoming shows will have average prices that will be basically in line with Nickelback's.

LOL, All of U2's shows will have an average ticket price that is above the average for the industry as a whole. In addition, U2 are playing some of the largest attended stadium shows in history with this tour. The idea that you would compare U2 playing to a 65,000 stadium to a reduce capacity show of 13,000 for Nickelback is just absurd.

Also, I love how the U2 sheep on this forum solely blame NLOTH's sales failure on downloading, when in reality, it's also to due to the fact that many U2 fans just don't like NLOTH.

How can you call the top selling album worldwide of the year and the 2nd best selling album in the United States of the year so far, a sales failure?

Oh no, not another troll....

For the record, this album has received a lot more praise from both the die hard fans (which I guess you´re not) and the press around the world as compared the last three ones: HTDAAB, ATYCLB and Pop. All of them great albums in my book. It´s just that NLOTH is better.

As for figures discussion, Maoilbheannacht has already put the debate to rest.

Yep...every single sentence.

1. You see, Nickelback have already hit several of the same markets in the past several weeks that they're going to be hitting this coming summer. Naturally, when an artist does return engagements, they usually don't sell out, since demand has already usually been met. And just because these particular shows are not sold out now, doesn't necessarily mean that won't be by showtime.

2. I did PROVE that Nickelback don't have problems selling out their shows since I provided actual PROOF. And again, 180, 240 or 270 degree end stage configuration setups are STANDARD setups in arenas. Their first leg boxscores show that ALL tix that were available were sold, apart from their Chicago show.

3. The average concert ticket price for the past few years has been between $50-$55, not $69.50. And in order for U2 to fill stadiums in weaker markets, like, Norman, OK, Dallas, Houston, Charlottesville, etc., their average prices for these markets are going to have to be lower than larger markets, like, NY/NJ, Toronto, Chicago, Boston, LA, etc.

4. No matter how you look at it, NLOTH is a sales failure. Period. Nickelback and AC/DC's latest albums were released in late 2008 and have outsold NLOTH. But of course, to make it look like U2 has the bigger seller, he blames NLOTH's low sales strictly on the market decline and posts the top selling albums released in 2009, despite most mega-selling albums aren't released until the fourth quarter of the year.

Oh no, not another troll....

Is this place full of trolls or is just a couple of them with different nicknames?

Maybe we should recall this thread "How to dismantle an atomic troll"

I don't care about other bands, this is a place where we only want to discuss U2 sales and I don't care about pop cover bands (Coldplay) and pure shit (Nickelback-almost wnknown here in Europe!).
Bye!

Last thing for the trolls:
NLOTH is a great album: buy a ticket for the concert and go to see them live!

Um U2 is the biggest seller thus far in 2009 without a tour to have it backed up in any market thus far. It has sold 2.4 million on the name alone - so it is far too early to be calling it a failure. In my opinion it will surpass Nickelback's latest set by the end of the year. Period.

i think a good indication of NLOTH success will be Green Day's and Eminem's sales. If they reach 10M then NLOTH not so good, if they match NLOTH with 5M then we can say NLOTH has been very successful

No matter how you look at it, NLOTH is a sales failure. Period. Nickelback and AC/DC's latest albums were released in late 2008 and have outsold NLOTH. so just because two albums released late last year (that had the whole holiday rush thing, which is a great sales booster) have more sales than NLOTH, that makes NLOTH a sales failure?

So let me get this straight... in order for a u2 album to be anything but a failure, it has to outsell every album ever released within the past 12 months? Why?

If this album even ends up in the top 10 selling albums of 2009, thats a SUCCESS. Maybe it's not as high as some people would expect, but when you consider all the music released within a year, for an album to sell in the top 10 for that given year cannot be considered a failure.

I hate nickelback, but just because i hate them doesnt mean im gonna try to prove their recent release a failure. Its actually quite successful. Its pure shit, but its successful shit.

Its fine if you hate NLOTH, its fine if you say its not blowing the world away based on its chart performance, but its doing pretty freaking well, and calling it a failure is just nonsensical.

Or is it just me, peoples? Am I wrong? Is 2 million+ not good anymore:huh: Number 1 for the year is not successful anymore?? Someone fill me in on what success is, then?

4. No matter how you look at it, NLOTH is a sales failure. Period. Nickelback and AC/DC's latest albums were released in late 2008 and have outsold NLOTH. You can't judge whether the album is a sales failure or not yet, it's only been out a month and a half. Come back at the end of the year and you might be able to make an argument, right now you have none

Of the 14 shows I listed, only TWO of them are return dates.

All you showed were a shows that soldout at reduced capacities. In addition, just because they soldout at reduced capacities does not mean that they did not struggle to get to that point. The Philadelphia show was several thousand tickets below capacity for a 270 configeration show which basically shows they peaked out at that attendance level.

3. The average concert ticket price for the past few years has been between $50-$55, not $69.50.

Here is the average ticket price level for each year since 2000 as provided by pollstar:

2000 $43.75
2001 $43.86
2002 $46.56
2003 $50.35
2004 $53.55
2005 $57.00
2006 $61.58
2007 $62.11
2008 $67.33

I was a little off on the average ticket price for 2008. Nickelback has average about $55 dollars on this tour in 2009, which is below the average ticket price unadjusted for inflation all the way back to 2005. Adjusting for inflation, it is below the average ticket price for each year since 2000. But, it is an improvement over the average ticket price in 2006 of $40 dollars, which is $43.75 in 2009 dollars.

So? The average ticket price will still be above the average ticket price for 2009. Plus, were talking stadiums at expanded capacities above what would be normal for a stadium concert in the past.

Will see who's predictions were correct for those "weaker markets" this fall.

Besides WISHING that every new U2 album was a sales failure, what factual information do you have that supports that idea?

Nickelback and AC/DC's albums were released 4 and 5 months before NLOTH. They were released during the holiday season. NLOTH has only been out six weeks. Be patient. It will outsell Nickelback's latest release this year and AC/DC's by the spring of 2010 despite declining market conditions.

Albums in 2009 are selling at about 50% the rate they were in 2004.

The only way to accurately gauge album success is to compare to the other albums it is competing against in the same initial year or two.

NLOTH so far is doing fantastic against the sales competition in 2009, and that INCLUDES albums that were released in 2008! Both list are not of albums just released in 2009, but album sales for ALL albums regardless of when they were released.

What is the minimum NLOTH would of had to have sold in its first 6 weeks in 2009 for you NOT to consider it a "sales failure"?

Where do you think NLOTH will finish at the end of the year on the worldwide album sales chart and the US album sales chart for 2009?

How much had HTDAAB sold by week 6/7? In an album market down by 50%, NLOTH would of been selling 3.6 million by now in 2004, and if it was released in November probably closer to 5 million worldwide. And those estimates are probably low, seeing as I added 50% NLOTH sales as opposed to doubling them seeing as the market is now half what it was.

With regard to your 1st "point", now your trying to make excuses/reasons for your failure to prove a point? Next your going to write that Nickelback didnt sell out because the venues don't serve Pepsi, so people dont like to go.

With regard to your 4th "point", the album was released in March not November/december like AC/DC who picked up the HUGE holiday increase. Additionally, since it was released in March, its only 1 1/2 months old (no tour or 2nd single yet). To say an album is a sales failure when it is still in the top 5 selling world wide albums is foolish. I mean, you do realize you sound like your just here to complain instead of objectively converse about the sales situation.

Maoilbheannacht- While I do not feel that NLOTH is doing fantastic YET, I think it is selling well and is on pace to do very well. With that said, it will do you no good arguing with this fellow because he clearly knows nothing about what he is talking about. If NLOTH is a sales "failure" then I guess every album released so far this year has been an even bigger failure based on sales. This it the type of person who would make a statement that BOMB sold better than NLOTH in its 1st month because it was a better album. Not realizing the real reason, which is that Bomb was released at a time of year when even the Jonas Brothers could sell 200k a week. Well, you get what Im saying.....you can keep handing him his ass but at the end of the day...he'll just make some BS statement to keep you going.

Well said. I don´t have the exact figures for HTDAAB at the end of 2004 but I don´t think it had surpassed 5 million wordlwide by that time. I´m not sure if NLOTH would have sold 5 million by now if it had been released November 2004 but definitely 4 million.
