Week 5

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Magnificent will be the make or break for this album I think, I can't believe it's taken them so long to release it. I mean the reaction to Boots was clear from the start, the label should of realised they needed a second single straight away

Even a doubter like me knows that U2 will sweep the Grammys next year. They eat that shit up. Brits, not so much.

Gibson Explorer...I know who you are. Oh yes, it took some time reading your posts in many different threads about U2 but I have finally figured out your true identity and I for one will not follow you to the dark side of hate for U2:sexywink: :

U2 still in the top 25, maybe the panic about them leaving the top 30 was a little premature?

NLOTH still has a chance at being the biggest selling album of the year, folks. The tour is going to be huge. Rolling Stone, Blender, Q, USA Today...they all raved about the album, giving it 5/5 stars and proclaiming it as U2's best since AB...with a few subtle hints at it possibly being their best EVER. Come on, this kind of critical acclaim more often than not leads to multiple grammy awards. The tour will be in overdrive this Fall leading up to the holiday selling season...if the economy just gets a little better, NLOTH will be on a lot of Christmas lists with the tour keeping U2 in the news. IMO, they are delaying single releases to properly space them out in such a way that NLOTH can benefit from tour plus current single for the rest of 2009.

Then the Grammy awards hit next Feb/Mar, along with another leg on the tour. Similar scenarios for the last two albums, where U2 showed they were very adept at maximizing sales over a 2-year cycle with good timing. If NLOTH wins album of the year, which I think it will at least get nominated for, then historically, it has resulted in a return to the Top 20, or even Top 10, on the U.S. charts. For ATYCLB and HTDAAB, the timing of those awards were also much longer w/respect to the release of the album...NLOTH could benefit even more since this time the awards will come less than 1 year from it's release...and with a record-breaking, innovative tour stopping in most major markets within months no less.

This album is FAR from a dud. It's a smash hit...just read the headlines on Billboard that stated "U2's NLOTH best selling album in the world for 2009 first quarter". Don't buy in to all the negativity. Not when even the Top musicians and bands in the world right now would LOVE to have U2's combined draw of Album Sales and Concert Ticket demand. No one else can do BOTH better than U2, and it's been that way for 25 years now. What makes it all the more amazing in 2009 is that U2 continue at the top of album sales and ticket sales without a huge hit single from NLOTH, at least not yet. When Magnificent is released, it will just be icing on their cake.

No need to be concerned about U2's spot in the world music scene, folks. They are the best in the world, period, and that has been true for a very long time now.

HITS Final now in: U2 at number 11 with 36,110 down 30% on last week. Five new entries above it, so not too bad.

From billboard.biz:
U2 and Lady Gaga continue their reigns on Billboard's pan-European charts. "No Line on the Horizon" (Mercury/Universal) starts a fifth week at the Top 100 Albums summit and "Poker Face" (Interscope/Universal) moves into a seventh week at No. 1 on the European Hot 100 Singles.

"Horizon" has three No. 1 berths across the region, holding steady in Hungary and Greece and moving back 2-1 in Spain. It falls beneath the top ten, 9-17, in the United Kingdom, where "Magnificent" will be released as its second single May 4, and 1-2 in Portugal, but is up 3-2 in the Belgian region of Flanders.

Billboards charts are once again rather different from HITS. On HITS, Prince seems to have easily obtained the #1 spot, yet on Billboard, he's #2. U2 are also #12, not #11 as they are on HITS. Last week, U2 was #5 on HITS, but #6 on Billboard. So does anyone have SoundScan figures for NLOTH for the last two weeks? Does anyone have SoundScan for Prince this week so we can compare to HITS?

Thanks!

Keith Urban is #1 on Billboard top 200 with 171,525 copies sold, while Prince is # 2 with 168,420 copies. NLOTH sold 35,989 copies this week (#12) and the previous one 51,179 copies (#6).

Thanks Ajax! Do you happen to have Kelly Clarkson's numbers as well for the past two weeks? I'm curious as U2 seemed to have surpassed her in sales this week.

What's interesting about the SoundScan data is that HITS had Prince at 185,956 copies sold and Urban at 177,292 copies sold. While both artists saw lower sales with SoundScan data, Urban's numbers were only about 6K off. Prince's numbers were a whopping 17.5K off! It's rare to see HITS and SoundScan disagree that much. For example, per HITS, NLOTH sold 36,110 copies. SoundScan is almost right there with 35,989, a difference of only 121 copies. I wonder why HITS was so dramatically different with the top values this week. Could there have been 17K copies sold in "early street sales"?

Using SoundScan and Billboard numbers, NLOTH's run in the U.S. is:

1-3-2-6-12

547 (early "street" sales) + 483,925 + 132,494 + 76,317 + 51,179 + 35,989

Total: 780,451

Doctorwho, Kelly Clarkson sold 33,897 copies this week (#14), while the previous one sold 51,608 (#5).

Doc, look up a couple of post above yours, there are the Soundscan number for the top 50 positions on Billboard: http://www.u2interference.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6074112&postcount=75

According to Soundscan, the actual total is 780,478. So somewhere your numbers are 27 copies off. :shame:

:D

nloth n.5 this week on mediatraffic with 136.000 copies sold. so far have sold 2.286.000 on mediatraffic, plus the 7,5% not coverage by them the amount is 2.457.000.

Thanks! I didn't see that link. Hopefully we can get one every week.

Not sure where the 27 copies come from. These aren't my SoundScan numbers, just what others reported (as, sadly, my source for SoundScan is no more :( ). The total number is just ever so higher than the numbers I had (i.e., those 27 copies). Can anyone check to see if I have an incorrect weekly number (plus pre-sales)?

28 KINGS OF LEON ONLY BY THE NIGHT 17,988 18,013 0% 565,430

This is what I'm hoping NLOTH will do. Have weekly sales of 15-20K for an extended period of time. I think with the tour and future singles, it's possible. Just yesterday, I heard a friend ask if I heard the new U2 single, "Magnificent". So word is finally starting to spread. Plus, that friend has the album and she loves "Moment of Surrender". I've had other friends love "Boots" (yes, GOYB!) and other faster paced songs. In other words, people are slowly discovering this album. With the tour, this may help keep NLOTH going at that 15-20K place, like Kings of Leon, for a while (note that while Kings of Leon broke through in the U.S., their songs have not been hits on the Hot 100, but have succeeded on alternate charts - so NLOTH may be able to accomplish the same).

>10 SWIFT*TAYLOR FEARLESS 41,557 39,532 5% 2,977,444

So both of these are stabilizing on higher numbers than No Line?

Not really, they have both been out longer, so are new singles are helping those albums,
