16% increase in sales. A Jump of 27 places on the chart!

Ok, why did this happen? Was it the HBO TV show? Or is COBL starting to catch some fire?

Ok, why did this happen? Was it the HBO TV show? Or is COBL starting to catch some fire?
COBL seemed dead just two weeks ago. The song raced up the Triple A charts all the way to #3, hit #7 on Mainstream Rock charts, and about 4 weeks ago, started showing up as "taking off" on Hot AC, and the video debuted at #15 on MTV and #18 on VH1.

Then, it seemed to run out of steam. MTV dropped it two weeks after it charted, it stayed at #18 for a couple weeks on VH1 and then disappeared, it started dropping fast on Mainstream Rock, disappeared from HOT AC completely, and even appeared to peak on Triple A, as it dropped from 3 to 11 with a two week trend of declining spins.

About 5 days ago, COBL stopped falling on Triple A. Now, it's gaining spins and stations fairly rapidly again, and it's risen back up to #5. Also, it just showed up on the HOT AC "taking off" chart again this morning. The video seems done and these two formats are all that are playing the song right now.

All of this comes from mediabase.com, which gets updated every 12 hours. I usually check it every day, which allows for near realtime airplay numbers. All of U2's singles in the U.S. have hit #1 on Triple A format except for COBL. It appeared that COBL was destined for a complete flop, and maybe it still is, but the trend over the last week is interesting. If COBL continues on to the top of the Triple A format, it will have a much better chance of spilling over to the HOT AC/Adult Top 40 radio format, which is MUCH larger, and who knows where that would take the song. It's still probably a longshot to show up on BB, but it's not dead yet.

Sometimes is the #1 played "recurrent" on Triple A, and would place at #22 on the chart based on it's current airplay. It also shows up on the HOT AC recurrents, and Vertigo drops in and out of the Top 30 on Mainstream Rock as a recurrent as well. ABOY has actually cracked the Top 20 of the Active Rock format as a recurrent in the last few weeks, too.

So, for whatever reason, all 4 U2 singles have seen some increase in airplay on the usual radio formats in the last few weeks.

I just hope its not because Universal sent out a team of 50 people to pick up a combined 1 thousand copies at retail to prevent the album from falling off the chart.

Thanks Soldatti for the information!

That's fantastic. I was sure that the bomb won't be in the Top 200 this week because it was losing a lot of positions every week. The sales have been falling a lot the last weeks, so this 16 % increase in sales and that position are great.

With the Vertigo Tour coming back soon in the U.S, we can hope for a good future...

Nice (small) comeback in Northamerica! What can be the reason? Has COBL now a little influence or is it because the tour will come back soon?

I think it could well be the tour : expectant fans & hot anticipation due to the 3rd leg starting soon & being already long sold out combined with v.well recieved / totally mind blowing shows across Europe.

Does anyone have full access to Billboards Catalog sales and/or chart? If U2's albums (specifically the 80's "Best Of" and possibly JT) also increased on that chart, then perhaps there was a push from "Entourage". Similarly, if HTDAAB slips back down next week, we know it was just a token push from the show.

However, if HTDAAB and the Catalog albums increase again next week, then clearly something else is helping this album go back up the charts. Recall, in 2001, around this same time of year, ATYCLB fell out of the Top 100. However, thanks to "Stuck..." it slowly worked it's way back into the Top 100. It continued to linger in the Top 100, eventually reaching #10 when U2 won 4 Grammy Awards in 2002! Perhaps we'll see something similar with HTDAAB. Hmmm... wonder if U2 will be playing in the Super Bowl again this year?

It's Entourage helping, along with increased plays on the Alternative stations.....if the album can make it to the next tour leg, which it should thanks to "COBL" on the rise, it should make it into '06.

U2 rules the Billboard Eurocharts!

Billboard has updated it's Eurocharts, and U2 rules!

Top 100 Albums

HTDAAB up to #13
B/O 1980-90 at #64 RE
B/O 1990-00 at #68 RE
Joshua Tree at #99 RE

COBL is at #45 on the Top 100 Singles

As for the Pop Catalog Charts for the U.S.

B/O 1980-90 up 2 spots to #28

It appears that U2 albums got a boost worldwide this week for whatever reason.

54. Copenhagen, Denmark : July 31, 2005 : Parken Stadion : GROSS $3,650,294 : ATTENDANCE 50,000 : SHOWS 1 : SELLOUTS 1

Although I'm not 100% certain, it appears that U2 now has the GROSS record and Attendance record for Parken Stadion in Copenhagen, Denmark. Past Stones and U2 attendance levels for the stadium were always below 50,000 and the GROSS was never as high as this.

The 26 album sold 69k whereas the 30 album sold 54k - so another steady week for Bomb.

COBL also holds at 21 - with an increase in points !

Well the reason for the boost is the incredible performance in some european countries - clearly linked to the tour. The increase in the US was, while welcome, only very small.
