The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
NLOTH on a charge on amazon.com - upto #65. also at #35 on iTunes US. hopefully be a few rises in chart position / sales, for next week.

NLOTH down in the Netherlands too, but not as drastic as in Ireland: 45 (from 40).:crack:

why didnt U2 play more commercial songs / hits on SNL? and more to the point why not promote the current single - crazy - by playing it!!

a missed opportunity here.

does anyone know the likely TV viewers for SNL?

With no big singles, with the economy hurting, and with no tour, it's clear the album will drop in Europe.

However, NLOTH seems to be rising in the U.S. thanks to the tour and perhaps this SNL performance. NLOTH is #5 right now on the U.S. rock albums chart on iTunes and up to #30 for overall albums. "U2-18" is, coincidentally enough, #18 on the U.S. rock albums iTunes chart. And U2 have many more albums on that chart. They have have many songs in the Top 200 rock songs on iTunes.

Given that NLOTH has seen a rise in the charts along with stronger sales each week, I'm sure this week and next will be fine for NLOTH in the U.S. I'll be interested in seeing how the album holds up as it hits other parts of the country.

Down one from last week sold just over 1,000

Did NLOTH pass the 1,000,000 mark yet.

Yes. It has at least 1,003,000 copies sold. ;) I say this because we know the sales numbers from the week prior, where NLOTH had a total of 997K sold in the U.S. and we also know it had an increase in those sales. Hence, it is safe to estimate 6K sold, which will put NLOTH past the 1M mark in total U.S. sales.

So it's down about another 50 spots in UK near the the bottom of the top 200. At this rate it won't beat the 370k Pop did in '97, so will be their worst seller here since October.

In Europe it's finished now too : last week down 39 to #75, this week probably out the top 100.

It has had a pretty decent run though & will be one of the top 5 albums of the year.

Once the tour resumes in Europe in 2010, NLOTH may see a significant rise back on the charts in numerous countries and in Europe overall. Plus, there may also be a holiday benefit. So I wouldn't say the album is done in Europe quite yet.

If an album ships 5 million copies does that mean it sold that number or do the shipments only count if they are sold. Various websites state NLOTH has sold 5 million copies and I just want to know how the system works.

One single newspaper said 5 million and everyone is taking it as fact. The newspaper said 5 million sold, which makes me think it was a typo. Shipping 5 million would of made no sense. The album has sold 3.5 overall, it shipped 3 million at first. I bet a large percentage of that 3.5 million is digital sales, so I doubt they've gone too much over 3 shipped maybe 3.5-4 million shipped

If an album ships x copies, that means copies sold to stores (and online shops). It is an important amountfor the band, as they get royalties based on those sales (and based on the suggested retail price).
I don't know if the album has actually shipped 5 million copies or not though.

Has MusicCharts updated its list? At this point the album should be much closer to 4 M than 3.5 M per MusicCharts. I guess that before the year end we will hear from U2 Management and I´m pretty sure the figure they will mention is 4 M sold to consumers, at the very least.
I don´t think the album has shipped 5 M though.

Given the sales of past U2 albums, even with this economy and the current music climate, I wouldn't be surprised if 5M copies were originally shipped. As MusicCharts seems more reliable (MediaTraffic was reporting decreased weekly sales when the album was up significantly in Europe and holding steady in the U.S. - so I doubt the accuracy), I would say that close to 4M have been sold to actual consumers. This is a far cry from past U2 albums, but again, given the economy and massive piracy, this is actually very good. Both sites list NLOTH as the worldwide top selling album released this year and one of the best selling for all albums in 2009. In other words, despite a big hit single, NLOTH still took off about as much as can be expected. I'm really not sure if a big hit single would have changed things that much in this current music climate (see Eminem, Kelly Clarkson and Flo Rida as examples of artists with big hit songs, but so-so or poorly selling albums).

I read this article on atu2 that was featured in The Sunday Times, and saw this statement:

"The tour is designed to support No Line on the Horizon, U2's latest album, which is not selling as well as previous releases. Since going on sale in March, the album has sold 991,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, a company that tracks sales data.

How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, the band's previous album, released in 2004, racked up sales of 10m."

It's amazing how the media can twist a fact. The article mentions the US sales of NLOTH, and compares them to the WORLDWIDE sales of HTDAAB. How ridiculous.

A lot of times the people that write these articles are also misinformed about the real data. While the twisting of the data might be blatent likely its not. That shows though that you shouldn't believe everything you read or see on TV :)

Third week in a row NLOTH doesn´t make Mediatraffic chart so sales are not updated. The actual number per Mediatraffic should be close to 3,370,000

The logic of not estimating sales when the album is off an estimated unofficial chart makes no sense at all...worldwidealbumsales estimated them at 3,379,000 last week
