It's number 7 now and it's gonna fall, it is barely selling now. And come on for U2 only hitting platinum in the UK and then completely fading is a huge underperformance

Wow, all Bono has to do is die and the album's sales will be through the roof.

The only way to accurately judge how well an album does is how well it sells VS other albums in the SAME YEAR. Having one of the top 10 or top 20 selling albums of the year is NEVER "terrible" or a "huge underperformance".

Sadly, Jackson's passing created the "death as a career move" scenario. I'm sure all artists suffered drops this week on the U.K. charts.

The U.S. charts will show Jackson's albums on the catalog charts, but not the Top 200. This is because Billboard separates the two. So Jackson's death will not impact the Top 200. But I do expect any surge Jackson's death caused will be relatively short-lived.

As for U2, once their tour starts, I do expect the album to rise significantly on the charts. While the album only going Platinum is disappointing, not all U2 albums have been big hits in the U.K. Slow CD/album sales, the lack of a big hit song, the economy and just a change in musical tastes is making the market a challenge for U2 with this album. But the tour should help.

Michael Jackson currently holds the top 3 spots on hitsdaily, looks like he'll be topping the world chart this week by quite a bit

Look at the rise in chart position in Spain, from #40 upto # 12 and they havent even had a concert yet, i think it just proves that the tour does have an effect on album sales.

Not worldwide though. With global sales, NLOTH is still the best selling album of 2009 so far, regardless of what year the album was released in.

Even if it were to be the biggest seller of 2009, theres a fair few albums from late 2008 which would still have sold more in total.

But hey, if NLOTH were to remain biggest seller of 2009, i'd be over the moon :applaud:

This is to be fully expected. When an artist dies relatively young and unexpectedly, even if he/she/they are past their prime, music sales spike. Janis Joplin, for example, didn't have her first big hit until after she died. Elvis saw a huge sales surge. Kurt Cobain became a "hero".

But it should be noted that Jackson sold well anyway. Per an article I read, his catalog sold approximately 500,000 copies a year in the U.S. That's each year, and he hadn't released any new material since 2001! U2 usually has several albums selling well on the catalog charts. These days, it seems the 80's "Best Of" is always in the Top 100 (on the catalog charts). That alone probably accounts for 250K in sales each year.

I just noticed No Line is at #42 in Amazon.com, up from somewhere in the 80s the day after MJ died, and no less then 14 spots above Eminem who is at #56 now. There is hope!

Even if it were to be the biggest seller of 2009, theres a fair few albums from late 2008 which would still have sold more in total.

1. Which is natural since releasing albums late in the year near Christmas provides a tremondous boost to sales thanks to people looking to buy something that they can gift wrap and put under the tree for family members and friends. Christmas sales are more vital to the music industry now than they have ever been. While most people obtain music for free these days, buying physical copies of music that can be wrapped and put under the tree has not gone out of style.

2. Album sales in 2008 were stronger than they have been in 2009. Sales overall are down almost 20% from 2008 and may be down even more when just looking at top selling albums.

3. Albums released in 2008 or earlier obviously have a headstart on total sales vs. albums released in 2009.

yes im sure half the CD's sold for xmas aren't necesserily what people want or would actually buy, its a matter of finding something just for the sake of giving.

and as paul mcguiness once said "for a band like U2 it doesnt make buisness sense to put out an album any other time than the 4th quarter"

yet for some reason they couldnt finish NLOTH in time, 3 years in the making and still not complete on time for a xmas release. big mistake in terms of sales.

whats the chances of a further few position increase after the 2nd Barca show? im surprised to see them not playing madrid's bernabau though. but i guess people would travel to Barcelona.

It most likely didn't feel much of an effect from the first show in this chart, next week's chart should show the effect of both shows

No big shock...they havent done any promotion on this album in months in the US, its actually done decently for the lack of promotion there. I am happy to see Jacko's music at the top of the charts people forgot how many good songs he has much like U2 he has many hidden gems in his catalogue.

This #6 only reflects the last week (June 22-28). Maybe next week we will see NLOTH back to the Top5.

This year,U2 360 only plays in one major city or area (except England and Germany). By 2010 the tour will reach Madrid, Lisboa, Roma etc

Best Selling Albums in 2009 WORLDWIDE as of WEEK 27

1. U2 No Line On The Horizon 3,013,000

2. Lady Gaga The Fame 2,600,000
3. Eminem Relapse 2,098,000
4. Kings Of Leon Only By The Night 1,955,000
5. Beyoncé I Am... Sasha Fierce 1,907,000
6. Taylor Swift Fearless 1,914,000
7. Soundtrack Twilight 1,818,000
8. Soundtrack Hannah Montana: The Movie 1,730,000
9. Green Day 21st Century Breakdown 1,610,000
10. Pink Funhouse 1,536,000

Eminem's Relapse in its 6th week is selling 20,000 copies LESS than NLOTH sold in its 6th week on the global chart. Without a new, really fast selling album, released in the 3rd quarter or 4th quarter of this year, the only albums that will be able to compete with NLOTH for the biggest seller of the year based on current sales and trends are Relapse and The Fame.

This week on mediatraffic the album is at 30, down 9 and at 34000 sales, down 6000
At present the album is only 5000 copies from being off the chart completely...

However U2 are behind 5 MJ albums, and Bad is one position behind them. There was also 8 new entries, so U2 in relative terms gained 4 positions despite their sales drop
