Would be great!

But, don't they already have three number 1 hits in the Netherlands? Beautiful Day went to number 1 and Elevation also (after selling a lot of singles during the Dutch elevation shows). So, Vertigo makes three! Then, this could be their fourth number one. Or am i wrong?

grtz, Pascal.

Vertigo never made it to #1. It debuted at the #2 position, which was also its peak. Only Beautiful Day and Elevation have been #1 hits in the Netherlands.

Global Chart updated to show U2 at 6.538 million copies....not too shabby should move into the top 15 since 2001 within the next 2 weeks.

Hello,

Some of my fellow countrymen have already reported the big news from the Dutch charts, so here I try to give some more background info and maybe some new stats. And yes, bla bla, yadda yadda compiled by the Mega Charts (http://www.megacharts.nl), with the single sales only chart being published by Top 40 Web (http://www.top40web.nl).
For another week How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb sits at the top position. It's lead on the #2 record (Anouk again with her Hotel New York record) has decreased though, from 22% last week to 14% this week. Still, they sold the most, so they're #1! Sales were definately helped by the simultaneous success of the Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own single.
Here is the chart run for How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (27-11-2004)

6-1-1

Last week the SYCMIOYO single made a modest debut on the chart, entering the Mega Top 50 at #36. Since the single did not appear yet in the sales-only chart a big factor for this debut was radio support. This week the single makes a huge jump, shooting to #2. And again, radio support makes the difference. Because the #4 song is the new Jennifer Lopez single (Get Right), but on the sales-only chart the situation is reversed as J-Lo is #3 on that chart and U2 #5. So in all, a very good week for U2, earning their 22nd top 10 hit.

The #1 is a Carnival novelty single called Das Kleine Krokodil by the act Schnappi (yes, it is a German single). Trust me, you don't want to hear it. :tsk:

C ya!

This portion makes for interesting reading, to see the album decline in chart spots but continually increase in sales!

The BOMB only has to sell another 1,534,429 albums in the USA to reach the 4,000,000 mark in sales to consumers in the USA.

Here is what ATYCLB did in its first 13 weeks in the USA:

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000

TOTAL: 1,811,000

Here is what BOMB has done in its first 13 weeks in the USA:

839,724 + 288,466 + 280,332 + 299,645 + 350,013 + 94,815 + 59,233 + 48,557 + 35,907 + 34,370 + 35,052 + 39,648 + 56,692

TOTAL: 2,465,571

The above total for BOMB includes the 3,206 street date violation copies that were sold prior to the Tuesday release date.

ATYCLB was released 3 weeks prior to BOMB, so its total at this point in time 4 years ago adding the 3 additional weeks would be 1,945,000.

BOMB continues to be ahead of ATYCLB in nearly every market on the planet 13 weeks after each albums release.

Bomb's success is largely due to the incredible sales during the first 5 weeks though, after than it slowed down quite a bit. and we also have to remember that the market is not as strong as it was in 2000.

hopefully grammys + RnR Hall of Fame will take the sales at least to the ATYCLB level. and the tour starts after that, so its all good

Many thanks Soldatti, you're our king!

Germany #19 (#25)

Remember that Germany is a very important market, the 4th one in the world (the 1st is USA, the 2nd is Japan and the third is UK).

U2 has never ruled this market and it's a really bad thing since Germany and Japan could give an incredible push to U2 worldwide sales!

This is why I've always stated that chart positions can be deceiving. A few hot new albums are released and many older albums are pushed down. Does that mean they are flopping? Of course not - it just means something else is selling a bit more. Some people look solely at chart position and claim HTDAAB is "failing" when that's clearly not true.

Inversely, sometimes there are albums in the top 5, even #1, that barely crack 100K in sales! Which is better - an album that only peaks at #3 but sells over 400K that week, or an album that hits #1 but only sells 150-200K that week? Again, sales are far more important to me than chart positions. Having a #1 album is really about bragging rights, not much else.

The Bomb returns to #5 in the world charts which is really great. Eminem is only #7 which is a good sign.
