UK & US chart history (Albums & Singles)

UK & US chart history (Albums & Singles)

I was looking this forum for more than an year and I was a member with other name (Fedepeti) but never can't post here. Yesterday I change my name with another registration and here I am!
After a long time seeing mistakes and question that I can answer with my database here is the Chart History for U2.
Enjoy this information and please read the introduction for a better understand.
Note: This information is 100% true and without mistakes, thanks to Han Boogart (Hanboo), a chart expert with more than 20 years on this crazy job, he gave me all this information from his amazing and 99% perfect database. Thanks buddy!

UK SINGLES
From New Musical Express: started 15-11-1952 (Top 12) changed: 1-10-1954 (Top 20) 14-4-1956 (Top 30)
From Record Retailer/Music Week: started 10-3-1960 (Top 50) changed: 13-5-1978 (Top 75) changed 8-1-1983 (Top 100) changed 5-1-1991 (Top 75)

US SINGLES
From Billboard: started 27-7-1940 (Bestselling Singles, Top 10) 15-11-1947 (Top 15) 12-6-1948 (Top 30) 12-11-1955 (Top 100) 24-8-1958 (Hot 100)

The chart run format

The numbers in a run represent chart positions in consecutive weeks. Example 13-*3*-45 means first week on #13, 2nd week at its peak on #3, 3rd week dropped to #45.
A "0" means NOT on the chart (see re-entries).
(36/24/5 wks) at the end of a runs means 36 weeks chart entries, including 24 in the top 10, and 5 at #1. If there's only one number, there were no weeks spent in the top 10.
If the run was interrupted by a drop off of no longer than 4 weeks, more numbers appear to indicate the number of consecutive
weeks.
Example: (51-41c/14-11c/1 wks) 51 weeks on chart, of which 41 consecutive, 14 weeks in top 10, of which 11 consecutive, 1 week at #1.

Runs interrupted by a new (calendar) year or chart runs that are re-entries are also followed by a weeks so far number.
Example: (1 wk, 52 wsf) 1 week on chart this run, 52 accumulated weeks (total weeks until this date).

For trans-atlantic records (charted in both UK and US), the chart info of the other country is shown at the end of the run.
Example: US #1/24/13/1 means this record was a hit in the US, it peaked at #1, had 24 weeks on the chart (of which 13 in the top 10 and 1 at #1) in that country.

Re-entries (for albums only)
When the record briefly drops out of the chart, a "0" will appear in the chart run. If the record returns within 5 weeks, the run will not be broken.
If a record drops out for 5 weeks or more and then re-enters the charts, a new run, indicated by "Re" and a sequence number will be printed.
Example: 45-0-0-0-0-33 dropped out the charts for 4 weeks, then re-entered at #33.
If there is more than 1 re-entry, which is not indicated as such, a "Total # of re-entries" is printed.
Also, the weeks on chart of all the runs (main and re's) are added up together and printed in the "Total # of weeks" line.

The line with Total # of weeks is only printed when there is at least one re-entry. The highest number of consecutive weeks and total weeks spent in the top 10, top 20 and top 40 (if applicable) is also printed.
Example: 43-26c (Top 10: 12, Top 20: 16) 43 weeks on chart, of which 26 weeks was the longest consecutive run, 12 weeks in the top 10, 16 in the top 20.

Thank you for all this great information! It definitely fills in a lot of gaps in the chart information this forum has had!

Is this telling me that ATYCLB was still on the US Billboard Top 200 even in 2002? And that it hit no. 10, in 2002? I don't remember this happening, unless if I missed it.

I'm presuming that surge in sales would have followed U2's appearance at the Super Bowl ...

Yes, ATYCLB charted as high as #10 (only its third week in the Top 10 in the U.S., despite a lengthy chart run) after it won 4 Grammy Awards. The Super Bowl appearance started ATYCLB's upward climb and the Grammy Awards pushed it back into the top 10.

Note, "Beautiful Day" won 3 Grammy Awards the year before (in 2001) because "Beautiful Day" was released in Sept. 2000, which qualified it for the 2000 Grammy Awards, presented in March 2001. The album, however, was released in late Oct. 2000, thus qualifying for the 2001 Grammy Awards, which were presented in March 2002.

I've seen the 21 and 52 chart spot for BD and Stuck before, did Elevation and Walk on not even chart?

What surprised me on the US singles chart was that In god's country with its catchy melody only got to 44, All I want is you dropped to 83 (and the less loved When love comes to town got to 68), the first album single Fly only climbed to 61 and that Stuck in a moment only peaked at 52.
Hold me thrill me kiss me kill me, not an album track, got to 16!
And the beautiful Stay got to 61

JT, R&H, AB, Zooropa all got lots of time in top 10, and ATYCLB proved its power by getting as high as top 10 even in 2002.

Elevation and Walk On were not able to chart in the HOT 100. There was simply not enough airplay outside of the rock and modern rock formats. But, looking back, it sure did not hurt the sales of ATYCLB which has sold nearly 4.5 million copies in the USA to date.

Soldatti - Thanks for this info. I was unaware that Please was on the charts for 11 weeks.

Could you possibly look and give me the chart history on Passengers, week by week? I don't think there will be much, but I don't think I can look since I don't pay to billboard.

Thanks

Wow soldatti... thanks for that info... you've really cleared up a lot of uncertainty related to those POP and ATYCLB records.

I guess we see now that MOFO/IGWSHA never even made it close to the Hot 100.
Btw, do you know how long Sweetest Thing was bubbling under for?

Thanks.

Sweetest Thing never charted on the Bubbling chart, it made the Hot 100 straight. All the info about U2 & the bubbling under chart is in my post.

Thanks for this great info.

Could you double check "Hold Me...Kill Me" and "Staring at the Sun"? From my memory, I recall them both spending 4 weeks at their respective peak positions (that is, "Hold Me..." was at #16 for 4 weeks and "Staring at the Sun" was at #26 for 4 weeks). You have both of these at 3 weeks at their peak positions (instead of 4). My memory might be wrong, but could you recheck this please?

Thank you!

The information is straight from Billboard's magazine, and I'm sure that is fine. I have various artists on my database including whole chart runs for Beatles, Stones, Elvis, Pink Floyd (inc. the 741 weeks on the US chart, week by week) and many more. I also have UK & US All time lists for albums, singles and artists until the last week.
On all the cases the information was cheked several times and the few mistakes were fixed.
You can sleep very well, the information is right.

BTW if you want others chart runs only ask and I will try to send it to you.

Ah right. great! thanks for that soldatti.

Just wondering, if you have time, I was wondering if you could post the chart run of Eminem's last album, just so we can see what might be expected of his upcoming album released the week before U2?

Thanks.
