U2's Rose Bowl Show Breaks Attendance Record | Billboard.com

Billboard apparently published both the 1977 Dead boxscore and gave U2 the US attendance title in 2009.

Maoil, do you have a link to Billboard saying Popmart Reggio was an international attendance(gross?) in 1997. I scanned through 3 months of issues and didn't see it.

No, but I don't know of a single show prior to 1997 that had a gross that high.

Billboard Boxscores computerized database only goes back to 1991. That is why the Grateful Dead show was not mentioned. That show was from 1977 and most people simply don't remember. Until or if they upload the rest of the Billboard Boxscores from 1976 through 1990, you can expect to see similar mistakes.

The Phish festivals are an anomoly. The Dec 30/31 1999 Big Cypress in Florida sold 75,000 passes(which BB has confirmed, both boxscore and in article form) Phish the only band playing 5 sets totalling 16 hours of music over a period of 42 hours. Not a single or double night stand, not a multi-artist bill and passes could only be bought for both days.

Its still a two day event and not everyone who bought passes went to both days. It obviously should not be counted. This was in the Billboard database which goes all the way back to 1991, and they did not count it either.

Here is the global list (75,000+ instead of 73,000+) showing only the confirmed results from Billboard Boxscore:
63. U2 - 2011 - Santiago, CL - Estadio Nacional - 77,765

65. U2 - 2006 - Santiago, CL - Estadio Nacional - 77,345

They must have been really packed in at the 2006 show!

Just got back from the salt lake show and the attendance was displayed on the 360 stage video screen of over 50,000. this article comfirms it as well..:) The stadium was packed!

More than a year after postponing its show, U2 rocks Rice-Eccles | Deseret News

Wow, that would be incredible considering SLC was one of the "weaker" sellers up until a few months ago (Michigan also was very weak based on your ticket numbers). If Denver and SLC are as strong as the reports we are hearing, I see this leg hitting the $170-$180 million mark and in turn a $750 million tour total!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Denver and Salt Lake both sold the remaining tickets the day of the shows. and yup, when comparing them to the rest of the ticket sales results, they were worse than most of the shows, so if they managed to sell out I'm guessing the rest will too. I have been traveling a lot the past few days between U2 shows, so I have not got a chance to update the remaining results, but I will post them tomorrow. Finally made it back home..haha

watch this video of streets at rice eccles and it will show you just how packed it was!

It appears that there are four thin sections, two on each side, towards the rear of the stage that are empty and were not used for the show.

Interesting. Either they withheld those sections from sale because demand wasn't there or they withheld them because of an obstructed view. It looks like demand was clearly there, so I tend to lean towards the obstructed view. With that said, I can't wait for the attendance/gross for the show. Like I had mentioned, sales were weaker for this show all the way until the past few weeks. Some people even predicted as low as 26k for the show, which it now looks like that number could be near 90-100% off ;)

I reasonable estimate I saw was over 40k. This one did better than I expectated.

As for the unsold sections, they have been sold in other venues with similar tiered seating but they aren't very desirable sightlines. Would they have been $55 section?

I was on the field and from the looks of it they closed those sections off due to poor visibility. one of the articles I read said there were people outside the stadium listening to the concert because tickets had sold out. the two sections closed off could not of been more than 2,000 seats total.

Unless live nation or the u2 crew were wrong, there was slightly over 50,000 in attendance. they had the attendance of the show scrolling across the 360 stage video screen. when it first appeared it said 46,000 something but the number was rapidly increasing, then it came back around again later and said 49,000 something, then by the time it disappeared for good it was slightly over 50,000.

Judging by normal football capacity:

37,000 - Vegas(360 did 42,213)
39,800 - Nashville
44,700 - Winnipeg
45,000 - SLC

SLC was probably around 48k, so maybe 3rd most intimate crowd in North America depending on the turnout in Winnipeg.

My prediction of the most intimate shows in the US and Canada:

1) Las Vegas - 42,213
2) Nashville - ~45,000
3) Salt Lake City - ~45,000-50,000
-
1) Winnipeg - ~45,000-55,000

I'm surprised SLC ended up selling well in the end.

Here are the ticket results for the remaining shows. multiples means you can purchase up to 8 or more tickets in a row. if there is x2 or x5 or whatever, that means you can only purchase up to that many tickets in a row meaning that section is close to selling out.

Considering Denver was close to some of the shows here with a few multiples left, there are obviously not tens of thousands of tickets left, unless thousands are being bought the day of the show. I checked denver the day before and there was 4 sections with multiples and it managed to sell out so who knows. salt lake had a couple thousand tickets left the day before and it managed to sell out as well.

I predict Denver was 77,000 and Salt Lake 50,000 I was at both shows and they were completely packed other than the usual seats that were not put up for sale due to the visibility issues which was around 600 seats behind the sound equipment in denver and around 2,500 at the back two corners of rice eccles stadium.

Chicago, East Lansing, and Pittsburgh are probably the only 3 shows that may not reach capacity. but I could be wrong.

Looking at how well these shows are selling I predict $160+ million for this NA leg, if so The Rolling Stones will loose another record.

I think your right but I can see it going to $170-175 million too. Most predictions were between $130-150 initially, so this leg could be really huge. The lowest prediction was $90 million, which will be roughly 80-90% off ;)

My $90 million prediction was for 22 shows in 2010 (which would be $95 million today, considering inflation and accumulative album sales), excluding Mexico and did not involve having shows in Winnipeg and SLC put on sale MONTHS after nearby shows in Minneapolis & Denver were already on sale, despite that they were/are scheduled for the same week and/or leg. And not to mention the strong openers chosen (which weren't announced at the time) and the major difference of markets hit, which defines strategic scheduling. But of course, some people STILL like to ignore reality. ;)

Strong operners? Go to a show and you'll realize how much openers really make a difference...lol

I like this but I would say Minneapolis will hit closer to 70k-75k, Nashville should hit 50k and Michigan will be 50-55k (maybe lower if sales don't pick up). I also think Philadelphia has a shot at over 80k based on the sales you posted. All in all, I think your total gross & attendance are solid and would put U2 at the three quarters of a BILLION dollars!
