Just curious what the worldwide GROSS would be if U2 sold it's floor tickets at market value. Even if it is an unfair comparison. Just counting US/Canada numbers rough math lead me to about $15m.

In the Stadium setting outside North America, there are typically 15,000 to 25,000 floor tickets sold per show. In addition, the difference in prices for floor or reserved tickets is not as wide as seen in North America. So, outside North America, I think the band is probably selling the floor tickets at about market value, although the band has obviously underplayed all of these markets given the fact that all these stadium shows soldout within hours of going on sale, suggesting the band could have charged more across the board, or could have added more shows.

As for North American floor tickets, I think the band could have charged $200 dollars a ticket. The floor tickets were indeed the most sought after, more than the Golden Circle that sold at $160 dollars a pop instantly. There were only an average of 2,000 floor tickets per show in North America. At $200 dollars a ticket, as opposed to the nearly $50 dollars per ticket that was charged, I'd say the band could have added nearly $25 million dollars in GROSS to their North American total if they had done this.

I read in the paper that the U2 Adelaide show had sold 60,000 tickets and this is a record for any concert in Adelaide. The previous was 50,000 for a Dire Straits concert in 1983. Considering AAMI stadium has been extended since then I think the 60,000 crowd figure will be around the mark.

I have also heard in December that Adelaide Oval has been booked, the rumor is it is Robbie Williams and this will hold only 35,000.

So I think the U2 record for Adelaide will stand for a very long time and may never be beaten unless they tour again.

I believe that Dire Straits Concert you refer to was in 1986, not 1983.

Well, this coming week was to be the week that U2 would set a new world record for the highest grossing tour in history. With the tour postponed until November though, the Rolling Stones will once again break their own record this August.

The current record is the Rolling Stones: Bridges To Babylon/No Security Tour. That tour consisted of 147 shows from late summer 1997, through 1998, into early summer 1999. The still unbroken record Gross from that tour is: $338,943,489

U2's Vertigo Tour though has come very close to breaking that record and would have broken that record with the two New Zealand shows this weekend. The Vertigo Tour Gross total so far after 118 shows is $333,206,884.

One interesting thin about the Buenos Aires shows is the lower ticket priced charged for the two shows compared to POPMART. The average ticket price for the two shows was only $46 dollars, the lowest of any market so far on the Vertigo Tour. Back in 1998, U2 charged an average of $54 dollars a ticket and played 3 shows to 160,000 people with a Gross of almost 9 million dollars. This time, there were only two shows but with 150,000 people combined meaning 75,000 people per show and close to a 50% increase in the number of people per show over POPMART.

The Sao Paulo and Santiago shows each blew their POPMART figures from 1998 out of the water, but Buenos Aires did not do as well this time which is very unusual. Argentina despite its troubles in the recent past is rated as having the best standard of living in South America. The only thing I can point to is that the Rolling Stones were there around the same time and this may have dragged some money out of the market.

U2 have 10 shows left that have been put off until November. U2's current average Stadium Gross on the Vertigo Tour is about 4,836,000 per show. 10 more stadium shows would bring the total GROSS to $381 million dollars.

If the band would just add 4 more shows to the Australian/New Zealand leg of the tour, the total GROSS for the tour will be over $400 million dollars!

Just a correction, Argentina does not have the best living standard in South America. That privilege should go to Chile instead.

The United Nations comes out with its annual Human Development report every summer which measures the standard of living in every country around the world based on over 100 different factors. In the latest Human Development report that came out in 2005, Argentina ranked at #34 in the world while Chile came in at #37.

Here are the countries that made the top 50 in standard of living around the world with their score to the right on the United Nations Human Development Index.

I´m aware of that list. Yet, ask any south american people what´s the best country to live in and most of them will name Chile.
Argentina is still recovering from the devastating effects of the 2001 crisis.

One can make a rough estimate based on cost information from the POPMART tour. The POPMART tour cost $214,000 dollars a day even when there was not a show being played. The cost of the stadium leg of the VERTIGO tour is comparable to the POPMART tour which is all stadiums. The Arena part of U2's tour though, is about 1/3 the cost of the stadium part.

First though, we need to convert the cost of the POPMART tour per day in 1997 dollars into what it would cost in 2005 after counting in inflation. Adjusting for inflation, the stadium part of the Vertigo tour would be about $255,000 dollars per day. That tour lasted 90 days once you add in work days required to start the tour as well as work days involved in coming down from the tour. This puts the cost of the European leg at $23 million dollars.

The arena tour started at the end of March and cost about $85,000 dollars per day. The cost of both Arena legs in North America total comes out to about $18 million dollars.

Finally, the cost of the 4th and what appears to be final leg of the Vertigo tour will start in February and end in April. This will involve another 90 days for everything again and $23 million dollars in cost.

Total cost of the VERTIGO tour then comes out to about $65 million dollars. The reason this tour cost a little less than POPMART even adjusted for inflation is because 60% of the shows are in Arena's as apposed to Stadiums which involve cost that are on average three times that for the Arena.

U2 will GROSS $400 million dollars from just ticket sells once the tour wraps up in April. This means the band will take home a collective $335 million dollars. Divided among the 5 members, this means each band member plus McGuinness will receive a cool $67 million dollars each.

Merchandise where the gross to profit margin is even better would bring in a significant amount of money as well although I cannot caculate exactly how much.

Sales of nearly 10 million copies of HTDAAB plus another 2 million copies of the catalog over the past year would bring in roughly another 12 million dollars for each member of the band.

Once royalties from radio airplay, merchandise sales, albums sales, and the tour are added in, each band member will probably come home in April 2006 near $100 million dollars richer than they were before the release of the album.

The amount of money their making now is staggering, but you have to remember that if your not willing to make what your worth, then someone else will, whether its the record company or ticket brokers, scalpers and others selling U2 products.

According to the Sunday Times, U2 made £29,000,000 last year, around $50,000,000. To my mind this is a hugely inaccurate figure. The above breakdown seems to be more accurate (taking into account the delay in the Aus/NZ section).

This underestimation of their wealth has been going on for years. I'm sure the band isn't too bothered. I wouldn't be surprised if the group is the richest entity in Ireland. In a perverse Irish way that would carry it's own stigma. Best to leave that to 'Sir' Anthony O' Reilly.

The band made nearly $50,000,000 dollars just from album sales last year because of their 25% royalty rate. It may not be all underestimation, it may be the simple lack of careful research.

As for the band, their happy to report things like numbers of albums sold and numbers of tickets sold, but I don't think they like to report how rich they really are and probably like to keep a lid on that type of stuff, especially in Ireland. I wouldn't be surprised if Paul McGuinness threw out some "disinformation" in order to avoid or lesson the stigma that comes with being so wealthy.

A few years back this very same Sunday Times Rich list said they make about £3 / $5 on each album sold (one of the highest royalty rates around). They conervatively sold approx 5m albums during 2005 (3m for HTDDAB + 2m back catalogue). So this means they would have conservatively made approx £15m / $26.7m just from album sales alone.

So, question is, can they have made another approx £14m / $25m, or roughly 10%, from the £146.7m / $255m grossing Vertigo tour ?

ohh...they also sold in the region of 2-3m music dvd's during 2005, though i'm not sure what their royalty rate is on these .

Just in 2005, the Vertigo Tour GROSSED $295 million not $255 million. The band makes far more than 10% of the GROSS. Based on what I have read about cost for ZOO TV, POPMART and Elevation, as well as cost per show reported in the Irish Times, about 70% of the GROSS went to the band! Realize, that the band made huge profits on the Elevation tour and that tour GROSSED $143 million. The Arena tour for Elevation has similar cost compared to the arena tour for Vertigo. The only more expensive part of the tour was for the Stadiums in the summer which the Irish Times stated worked out to an average cost of 1 million Euro per show. Thats a cost of roughly $40 million dollars for the summer tour. The Summer tour GROSSED $155 million dollars, meaning the band pocketed nearly $120 million dollars just from their 32 European showws in the Summer.

Michael Cohl gave U2 $100 million dollars for the 93 date POPMART tour which had cost that were higher when adjusted for inflation than Vertigo, but had ticket prices that were less than half the average seen on Vertigo. The band has made a massive amount of money on this tour just from the sale of tickets!

Just curious what the worldwide GROSS would be if U2 sold it's floor tickets at market value. Even if it is an unfair comparison. Just counting US/Canada numbers rough math lead me to about $15m.

A bit late response here. But Roger Waters is running an auction for his premium seats, so this might be a rough indication of what the market value of floor tickets could be. It varies by city.
Anyway, here are the auction results for LA that just completed on Ticketmaster for Roger Waters:

Pool Circle C, D, B, Front Row US $640.00
Pool Circle C, D, B, Second Row US $600.00
Pool Circle C, D, B, Third Row US $510.00
Pool Circle C, D, B, Fourth Row US $500.00
Pool Circle C, D, B, Fifth Row US $450.00
Pool Circle C, D, B, Sixth Row US $420.00
Pool Circle A, E, Rows 3-5 US $410.00
Garden Boxes 341-344, 443-444 US $400.00
Garden Boxes 11-12 & 71-72 US $400.00
Garden Boxes 351-354 & 330-333 US $380.00
Garden Boxes 451-454 & 430-433 US $350.00
Garden Boxes 171-172 & 111-112 US $350.00
Garden Boxes 271-273 & 210-212 US $340.00
Garden Boxes 361-363 & 461 US $330.00
Garden Boxes 371-373 & 310-313 US $320.00
Garden Boxes 471-474 & 410-413 US $310.00

My guesstimate based on this is that U2 could charge $300-400 to get inside the ellipse, but the people in there might be a bit stale  .

We shall be getting the box office figures for Vertigo OZ soon!

Interesting though, the latest edition of Billboard Ticket Sales has the attendance figures for Pearl Jams Brisbane shows on Nov 10-11, but none for U2 who played a few days earlier?

Will Sydney 3 be the only show on the Vertigo tour with unsold tickets?

The Vegas shows had empty seats, but those were all purchased by hotels as comps to high rolling guests - which ultimately went unused.

I believe Sydney 3 already soldout a while ago. Ticketmaster later releases tickets in spurts to mess with scalpers as well as tickets that its own staff or partners do not use. An Empty seat at a show does not mean the ticket for that seat was not sold. Sometimes, tickets may go unused by companies as you say above, or some fans may have something come up and are not able to attend the show. Virtually every soldout show will have some empty seats because of these and other reasons, but the tickets were sold.

The only show that has not at any time soldout is Hawaii, but it appears very close to a sellout now.

There were large blocks of empty seats right at the top of each side unused. I think they sold most of what was released but I reckon there were a good few thousand not released at all.

Glad to say that it no impact on the noise the crowd made. Sydney 3 crowd were still amazing.

There's nothing quite like a stadium crowd when it's a good crowd.

Did you go to any of the other Sydney shows? There are usually always blocks of seats on the sides without any seating because of obstructed view from the lighting towers. But if this was at the top, it does sound more like tickets that were not released. I've not heard anything though to indicate that U2 had any difficulty in selling tickets for Sydney 3.

I heard a couple attendee reviews of 5-10,000 crap nosebleed tickets being unsold. The only solution is to wait for the final Boxscores and see if it was 3/3 sellouts.

Christina just put up her executive ticket packages on the market for the US tourdates in the spring. About USD$200 for rows 10-20 on the floor and USD$375 for the first 10 rows. There's also bonuses like free parking, merch gift certificates, free keychain and a backstage tour(no meet and greet)

Surprisingly they are selling - check TM.com - "basics" is the password.

She also has a ticket auction with florr tickets going for similar amounts.

There were some seats on either side in the A-seating that were empty during the Sydney concerts. I was meant to sit there, but I was moved right around to another area on the side of the stage (couldn't see the screen, but i could see the band).
We were moved because the tents for the sound desks and all that jazz combined with the lighting towers blocked pretty much half your view of the stage.

So these tickets were sold, we were just moved at the last minute :).

There's a photo from Sydney 3, from just before the band hit the stage, of a roadie doing final prep before the show starts. The roadie is on the b-stage and it shows the back of the stadium full of people. In the 3rd deck several hundred empty seats can be seen which cant be explained by spotlight towers. It's on the far right side of the photo halfway up.

http://www.u2-vertigo-tour.com/tour...Pictures by Matthias Muehlbradt)/DSCF2357.jpg

It's the only indication that any tickets may have gone unsold. Although, I do admit that it is splitting hairs.

The block of empty seats on the first level are because of the spotlight towers and the covered soundboard.

These Sydney 1 photos seems to indicate those same seats were sold several days earlier.

It's going to hit 4.5m spectators and probably close to $400m at the box office, that's just insane.

Thats just crazy, They earn so much and dont have 5 mins to sign autographs for all us fans in Melbourne at The Park Hyatt.

STING2, are these boxcore attendance figures, the number of tickets sold, or the number of people who attended?

Its actually the number of tickets sold, but its labeled as attendence in Amusement Business's reports. Obviously, there will always be a few no shows at any concert, but that type of thing is very small, is not recorded, will rarely be noticed, and is not relevant from a business perspective.

I went to all 3 shows, and there was definately a large proportion of the top tier seats that were not used on the third night where they were on the first two.
