How do singles with different versions in the same market count in charts?

For example, Beautiful day was a single that had Summer rain and Always as B-sides, but there was also the version with Discotheque and If you wear that velvet dress.
Which version is included in the charts?

In general, charts count both versions for calculating the position in the charts. They often have a policy limiting the # of formats a single has (which is four in the UK and the Netherlands, I think). So as long as an artist releases his single in four or less formats (2 maxi CD singles, 1 two-track CD single and a 7" single, for instance), then all those sales will be included for the charts.

However, this isn't the case in all countries. For instance, in Canada the different versions were counted seperately and thus charted seperately. This rarely occurs though.

:hmm: They just add those numbers together, from all formats?

So technically, a band that has 2 or more versions of a single could outsell a band that only releases singles in one version?

:reject: How many formats does U2 "have" in single sales?

Correct. If band A sells 60,000 copies of its single in a given week and band B has 2 formats of its single, with one selling 40,000 copies and the other one 30,000 then band B will chart higher (if the chart is solely based on singles sold).

What do you mean, how many formats does U2 have? In how many different formats their singles are released?
That depends, but usually in 2 CD maxi single formats and a 2-track CD single format (sometimes also as a DVD-single). But this can all change.
