im arguing on another message board with someone who says coldplay sold more records with their last album than u2s htdaab, and that the recent coldplay tour was bigger and generated more profit than u2's vertigo tour...is there any site to find this info? any help is appreciated.....

"Peeling Off Those Dollar Bills" is, I'm sure, the place to start.

You don't really need numbers for the Coldplay tour, what with it not counting for shit and all.

You really need to post this in the "Peeling off those Dollar Bills" section. There are some fantastic people here that can give you the exact details you are looking for. All I know for certain is that the 2005 numbers for tour profit had U2 way a head of Coldplay (for the year 2005 only). The album question I can't answer.

HTDAAB is slightly ahead in the US and worldwide for sales, but X&Y is set to overtake it in both instances over the next several months.

In terms of touring, however, U2 completely trounched Coldplay.

I like Coldplay, but since X&Y is Coldplay trying to be U2, it annoys me it is gonna outsell it. A case of the copy outselling the original!

Hmm, I don´t think it is that clear that X&Y will outsold the bomb.

As for the VERTIGO tour, these are the figures from Amusement Business reprinted on Billboard.com and in Billboard Magazine over the past year. The tour so far has grossed $295 million dollars worldwide and played to nearly 3.5 million people around the world. U2 still has to play 20 more shows this year in 2006. By the time the tour ends in Hawaii in April, the Vertigo World Tour will have GROSSED more than any tour in the history of the planet! So, copy these official numbers below and these Coldplay fans will see that their band is light years behind U2 when it comes to touring. Coldplay's GROSS for 2005 was 24.1 million dollars in North America and not more than $40 million dollars worldwide.

Here is the top 100 GROSSING tours of 2005 in North America ONLY. It does not include figures outside the United States which would add another $156 million dollars to U2's total GROSS.

I tried to copy the list here, but it comes out very jumbled, so here is the website address:

http://www.pollstaronline.com/sf-ye2005-top100tours.asp

Coldplay is at #17 for the year with only $24.1 dollars in GROSS for North America. U2 of course is at #2 with $138.9 million dollars right behind the Stones at #1 with $162 million dollars. So this chart clearly shows the difference in demand for U2 tickets vs. Coldplay tickets in North America.

But what are the world-wide figures, or are they not available?

These are U2's Global figures for the Vertigo tour in 2005.

GROSS: $294,795,607
ATTENDANCE: 3,414,556
SHOWS: 110
SELLOUTS: 110

The Rolling Stones did not play outside North America in 2005, so $162 million dolars is their Global total for 2005.

Several of the artist did play outside North America while others did not. I have not located a global list. A rough estimate would simply be to multiple the North America figures by 2 to know what the global figure would be. A more accurate way of course would be to look up the artist tour dates, find out the size of venues played and average price per ticket, but that is a more involved process.

In any event, globally, U2 is way ahead at #1, and the Rolling Stones are at #2.

Did you post all of the above information on that messageboard?
What was their reaction now that they have seen the facts?

When you say last album, do you mean X&Y? Or the last album before that?

X&Y hasn't caught Bomb yet, and I'm not sure it will, although they will be fairly close together.

As for AROBTTH, it has outsold Bomb, but not ATYCLB.
