Oasis is maybe the only band that for a couple of years has replaced U2 as the biggest band in the world.

In 95/96 they were huge all over the world, also in America that has always seemed to dismiss them in those years were really big having 2 smash hits in the top 10 radio airplay (Wonderwall, a universal song, reached #8 on the hot 100 and Champagne Supernova didn't charted in the hot 100 top 10 just because it wasn't released as a material single).

I think that Oasis has a more cathing and anthemic type of songs that U2.
They have a type of songwriting that only the Beatles in music hystory has had.

Potentially they've could become the biggest band in music hystory since the Beatles if America hadn't rejected them after Morning Glory.

In Europe they still huge and the new album will surely be,
but what feeling have you Americans got now about Oasis?

Do you get their importance in music hystory as we do in Europe ?

P.S.: Sorry for my really bad english....

I don't think Oasis are huge in Europe as a whole but they are huge in UK & most of their album sales in Europe have come from UK.

I think Oasis are under appreciated in US but then they've only sold about 7M albums there (U2 have sold about 56M!). Also Oasis have only released 2 decent albums (Def. Maybe & Morning Glory).

BTW - if you go to the "Can 1st week sales of new Coldplay album (X&Y) match those of HTDAAB?" thread you'll find some interesting discussions on Oasis album sales/Oasis popularity in US.

At any given moment, it's very easy to argue a certain artist is more popular than U2. While JT, R&H and AB sold a stunning 23M copies in the U.S. (per the RIAA), other periods of U2's career haven't been as strong. BUT...

Keep in mind that those big RIAA certifications (for JT, R&H and AB) came years after the album was released. Also, all three of those albums benefitted from the vinyl to CD changeover. Thus, people who bought the album on vinyl or tape were now buying it on CD, which almost doubled sales! The music industry most have loved the creation of the CD - at least initially - because not only did it provide better sound but it caused increased sales. It's little wonder, then, that they hated the next step in technology - namely mp3's - as those decreased sales (or, at best, didn't really improve them). Too bad it took the music industry something like 6 years to finally realize there's $$ to be made with mp3's.

But I digress...

My point is in '87/early '88 JT sold about 4-5M copies. In '88/'89, R&H sold 3-4M copies and AB sold 4-5M copies from '91 to mid-'93. Those type of numbers are pretty equivalent to what we are seeing with ATYCLB and HTDAAB. Therefore, in terms of actual CD's sold, U2 are almost the same.

As such, it's easy for an Eminem, a grunge artist, Oasis, Spice Girls, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Nelly, INXS, Shania Twain, etc., etc., to look more popular. All of these artists have enjoyed bigger yearly sales than U2 at a given moment in time. So if one looks at just one year, I'd say that easily all of these artists were more popular in '95 or '99 or '03 or whatever.

However, as Sting2 has pointed out several times, when one examines a longer period of time and factors in worldwide sales and touring, U2 easily dominates. No one can match the worldwide sales of U2 in a given segment of time. Even "Pop", which sold 1.5M in the U.S., still sold ~7M worldwide!

The funny thing about "Pop" is that it's considered a "failure" by U2 for selling only 1.5M copies. Yet look at these "American Idol" kids. The best selling album by any of them is from Clay Aiken, who sold ~2.3M copies of his first album. Kelly Clarkson's first album sold 2.1M copies. Fantasia is floating around 1M copies. Ruben Studdard's first album sold 1.7M copies and his second album may have fought to go Gold. All of these kids have the "American Idol" marketing juggernaut behind them, yet none of them have really sold that much more (and in some cases, less), than U2's worst-selling album!!

So again, popularity is a very broad term that can be defined in many ways.

Getting back to Oasis...

In the U.S. they have a small, dedicated following, but overall they aren't very popular. Just look at how their recent albums have performed on the charts...mediocre at best.

I like Oasis and will be seeing them, along with Kasabian on Sept. 11. However, I must say that I was not impressed by Oasis when I saw them open for U2 in Oakland back in 1997.

cd's dont sound better

Yes, they do.

Vinyl has a certain richness to it - I agree - but it doesn't allow for a lot of the little things in music to be heard. Perhaps vinyl covered up some mistakes, but I think that overall CD's are superior because they show those very mistakes. Also, convenience and durability easily make CD's better. As a person who owns tons of vinyl and grew up in the vinyl era, I adore CD's. As for mp3's, admittedly, those are just for convenience.

Dr. Who,

I belive that somewhere in Flannagan's Until the End of the World he mentions how Achtung Baby sold 10 million copies in 92. If the album sold, let's say 2 million in Nov. - Dec. 91, wouldn't that put AB's first year sales at around 11 or 12 mil? Did I misinterpret Flannagn? (It's been a few years since I last read the book.)

Soldatti,

Thanks for the Oasis chart info. Unfortunately it kind of proves my point that they aren't very popular anymore in the U.S.

And to add to this, if and when U2 does a major upgrade of their entire catalog, there will be another spike in CD sales. Having all the albums in digitally remastered sound, and perhaps with some bonus cuts, will continue to surge all the albums onward. It won't be the same as the transition from vinyl to CD, but there will be a nice bump. I know I would definitely by them all again, just like I did when The Police and Peter Gabriel remastered their entire catalog.

What do you think of the remastered Police CD's? How do they compare to the origional CD's? I have not purchased them because I was not sure if there would be any real noticable change in sound quality.

They blow away the original ones, in my opinion. The sound is so much fuller, so much richer. The songs just jump right out of the speakers. I actually just finished listening to Synchronicity - the beginning of "Murder By Numbers" has never sounded better. It feels like Stewart Copeland is playing right next to you!

Now if we could just get upgrades on U2, Springsteen, and Sting's solo material (the first few albums), I'd be really happy...

Oasis was popular in the US for about 2 years after that they havent done anything...

I'm talking about U.S. sales only.

Worldwide, AB sold about 10M by the end of '92. Given that HTDAAB is around 8-9M sold worldwide, I'd argue that the pace is the same - which is very impressive given the bootlegging/downloading issues.

The big difference is really in terms of hits. In the late 80's and early 90's, MTV played music and U2 was the hot thing. So their songs naturally flew up the charts. But now, videos don't do much for a song (thanks to MTV never playing any - at least not at normal hours) and U2's age is working against them. They need to do more to generate a hit song. "Beautiful Day" was an exception - it seemed to work on its own. That said, even that song got off to a slow start. "Vertigo" was brilliant for many reasons, one being how U2 marketed it. They need to do this again for their next single, otherwise, that's it for HTDAAB in the U.S.

Just Heard the new Oasis album "dont believe the truth",
it aint up to much, not many rock songs on it. poor really

cant see it being a big success outside of the UK

I never realized Oasis did not have a #1 album in the U.S. I thought that What's the Story had hit the top of the charts. It's interesting that, total sales aside, Pop hit #1 while What's The Story only hit #4.

Its pretty irrelevent where an album peaks. Pop may have hit number 1 but it fell quickly from the charts. Whats the story lingered in the top 40 for nearly 9 months. Be here now outpeaked Morning glory by reaching #2, but fell quickly and has only gone platinum. Sales are the most important thing,#1's are just the icing on the cake (excuse the cliche).
The biggest example i have of this is the performance of Aerosmith's greatest Hits released back in 1980. It has been certified 10xPlatinum but only peaked at #53.

Did you listen to the new album? Crap ...
Oasis were a flash in the pan, great band from 1994-1996 and then, disposable.

Soldatti thanks for the info about Oasis chart run in the US.

These data show how Oasis with Morning Glory was the biggest band in the world.
I mean 40 weeks spent in the billboard top 40 it's an amazing achievement, problably even better than the joshua tree chart run in the top 40!!

The Joshua Tree spent 35 Weeks in the US Top 10, 48 Weeks in the Top 20, 56 Weeks in the Top 30, and 58 Weeks in the Top 40.

However only JT out of all U2's albums spent more weeks than Morning Glory in the US Top 20.

Yes, and all this was on the back of ONE big hit in the US - Champagne Supernova (great song BTW). Let us not forget that not long after this Oasis supported U2 in some US shows - and are still big fans !

Two big hits, Wonderwall first when MG peaked at #4 and lingered in the top 10 for 15 weeks and then Champagne Supernova (a masterpiece song) stabilized MG in the top 20 for another 15 weeks.

Champagne Supernova didn't chart in the Billboard Hot 100 just because it wasn't released as a material single and back in 1996 to chart on the Hot 100 you had to do that.
But if you look at how it charted on the Top 40 Mainstream chart you will find that Champagne Supernova was a top 10 hit.

Oasis On the ARC Weekly Top 40:

Morning Glory is one of my favourite albums of all time, but i don't think they will ever be able to top it.

I've listened to the new album quite a lot, IMO it's badly regurgatated shite basically. Quite sad to see.
