U2 hit UK no 1 with Vertigo!!

well, according to the CD:UK chart, which I believe is based on mid-week sales, but they're always right anyway :)
I'll admit, I had a few doubts about them going to no 1, not because of the song or anything, but because of the competition (you know, all the tweens and teens who love Destiny's Child, Blue and Eminem).

I expect to be disappointed with the ARIA charts (Aussie charts). I reckon around #5... maybe a lil higher, but it just hasn't had nearly as much impact down here as BD or Elevation did.

WHYWHY.

EDIT: I uh just saw the results in WHERE THE ALBUM HAS A NAME.... and yah it's only achieved #5.... pretty poor.... I was hoping #3, but oh well... at least the UK has made up for it.
It might be cause U2 hasn't had much of an impact in OZ really since Elevation. Walk On sorta did ok.. think it got in the Top 10.. but since then, no tour, DVDs did ok, Best Of did absolutely nothing... so it's been pretty quiet down here in terms of U2 activity. It'll pick up when they actually come down here early next yr.

Ha!!!! That put all those lesser bands out on their arses, lol... not bad for 'old men', eh....(not that they're old but compared with todays average age of musicians..yeah...)

Hello, hello, I'm in a place called Vertigo.......yo.......

(Y' just can't keep good men down...)

Ok, going off to slobber and drool now....hee hee..

Yep only listened to the top 3 cos I knew they'd be number 1!!!

Way to go U2!

At last a song at the top of the charts that deserves to be there

I listened to Radio 1, who has "exclusive rights" to play the UK no.1 first...then I flicked to Capital FM, who are about 1 song behind. So I got the "yay" effect twice.

Hehehehe.

I need a life.

Anyway, good work, lads.

I'm so very over the moon tonight 'cos U2 are No. 1 again - back where they belong!
It would make it really fantastic if they could stay there and make it the double for next week! I too switched the radio on just to hear them announce U2 being No.1 - another saddo! Thank god that dismal Destinys child song didn't beat them to it  :hyper:

The single sold 51,917 copies on the first week.

Indeed. And for those interested, here are the estimates of the other songs in the top 3:
U2 50k
Destiny's Child 48k
Eminem 40k

And for comparisons sake, here's the top 5 of the week prior:
Eminem 63.3k
Destiny's Child 61.3k
Britney 41.6k
Christina 29.3k
Usher 26.4k

And before anyone starts moaning about 'lower sales' last week, here's the top 3 of 2 weeks ago:
Ja Rule 23706
Eric P 22641
Daniel B 19500

C ya!

Marty

Vertigo will fall very down next week...

Girls Aloud head for top spot on UK singles chart
16 November 2004 - 11:05:48
Music Week

Girls Aloud’s cover of The Pretenders’ 1994 number 10 hit I’ll Stand By You looks set to give the quintet their second number one single this weekend, according to early retail reports.

The Children In Need single (Polydor) is holding off competition from McFly’s Room On The 3rd Floor (Island) and Gwen Stefani’s What U Waiting 4 (Interscope), which are also set to enter within the top five this week.

Further new singles from Lemar (Sony), Embrace (Independiente), The White Stripes (XL) and JoJo feat. Bow Wow (Mercury) will be jockeying for a Top Ten placing on Sunday. This week’s chart-topper, U2’s Vertigo (Island) looks destined to tumble from 1-7.

In the albums market, Eminem looks set to retain the number one position in its first full week of release, after selling close to 50,000 copies since Sunday. Britney Spears’ Greatest Hits: My Prerogative (Jive) and Robbie Williams (Chrysalis) are likely to complete the top three, with Destiny’s Child’s Destiny Fulfilled (Columbia) and the Best Of Blue (Innocent) also entering within the Top Ten.
