The Thanksgiving slump is HUGE here in the U.S. Just check out movie grosses. Stores are often far less full - despite the holiday season now in full swing. Music sales will also drop.
A quick look at past data shows that Tim McGraw and 2Pac had drops of 60% or more in 2002 the week after Thanksgiving. Last year, Jay-Z saw his album drop 57% (something I think we might see again this year).
I don't wish to defend HTDAAB - we can't deny how big this sales drop is. There was clearly a rush factor to get the album due to U2's excellent marketing.
However, when Shania Twain, Destiny' Child, Gwen Stefani, Toby Keith and Fantasia hve drops of 50-65%, it also shows how slow this week is. Creed's and Nirvana's special best of sets couldn't prevent a >50% drop! Even Eminem had nearly a 50% drop! So while U2 had the dubious honor of the highest drop, compared to everyone else, it just shows how poor album sales are now in the U.S. Hopefully the holiday will pick up sales soon.
