I understand that prices for Bridges to Babylon tour were higher than Popmart. That´s the reason why the former grossed more money despite Popmart having a higher attendance.
Of course, I´m talking about USA here.

Actually, I think the Bridges To Babylon tour which played shows in 1997/1998/1999 in the USA did come out with a higher attendance total, but I would have to check to make sure.

Your realize though that your ticket prices are in CANADIAN dollars and not in US dollars. U2 had a lower ticket price for their shows in Canada on the POPMART tour than they did for US shows.

Does that explain why the Jacksons had a ticket price about double of Bowie or Van Halen? Same Venue about 1 year apart.

40 dollars Canadian was roughly the same as 30 US dollars in 1984.

Can I see your source for that fact? Did you know that the canadain dollar was once worth more than the US about 15 years ago?

I also find the projected inflation value of $6(1966) = $29(1997) to be on the low side.

Any comment of ticket prices for The 3 Tenors 94-97 US Stadiums shows. Pavarotti is friends with Bono, y'know.

The Jacksons had a ticket price that was roughly double of all major artist touring around that time in both the USA and Canada.

Well, the one source I have for the exchange rate is the Amusement Business records that gave the value of the amount GROSSED for the Canadian shows in both US dollars and Canadian dollars. The figures were printed in Billboard magazine, and can be checked by going to any library that has back issues of Billboard magazine on microfilm. Just got to the Billboard Boxscore chart for one of the issues in November, or December 1984. I'll have to look at it again to get the date, plus the figure in Canadian dollars.

There are couple of ways you can caculate the inflation from year to year. Find out the inflation rate for each year and do the math yourself, or you can use an inflation caculator like the one below:

http://www.westegg.com/inflation/

The calculator gets slightly different results than you would get doing the math yourself do to rounding, but its very accurate.

I thought the 3 Tenors concerts were in Arena's? In any event, it was not a large scale stadium tour like those launched by individual artist. A dozen shows over a 3 year period is not a good comparison. U2 could have charged a lot more in 1997 if they had only done 12 shows instead of 46.

I just find it extremely surprising that it would only cost $20-30 USD to see Elvis(1957) or the Beatles in 2005 dollars.

As for the 3 Tenors, here's were the only shows they performed:

1990 Rome at World Cup(Best Selling CD)

July 1994 - Dodger Stadium live PPV(cd+home video)

June 1996-March 1997 World Tour:
Tokyo
London
Munich
Gothenburg
Vienna
Dusseldorf
Melbourne
NY - Giants Stadium
Toronto - Skydome
Vancouver - BC Place
Houston
Miami

2 shows plus a 12 date World Stadium tour. They were given $90mil for the dozen date tour including upwards of $20mil for Each Tenor(Pavarotti getting the most).

Does this sound familiar to the $100mil tour/$20mil each offer given to U2 for their world tour?

Bono is friends with Pavarotti, y'know.

Do you have any Amusement Business Boxscore results that actually show 3 Tenors making that much money on the road. U2's September 1997 Boxscore for the Reggio Emilia Italy concert was the largest grossing single show in history at that time, with over 5 million gross from having 150,000 people in attendance.

If 3 Tenors were given a profit of $90 million dollars from a 12 date tour, than the GROSS figure would have been over $100 million dollars. Probably a GROSS of 10 million dollars per show! I would have to see an amusement business boxscore result to actually believe this. Do you have the dates for the individual shows?

I thought it was 12 shows in North America, but it was only 5 shows in North America. I wonder how much money U2 could have made from just playing 5 shows in North America instead of 46? U2 were able to charge $50 dollars a ticket on POPMART and played to 1.6 million people at 46 shows. But they could substantially increase the ticket price if they only did 5 shows to 250,000 people.

In any event, the two tours are simply not comparable. The price of tickets is artificially raised when the supply of them is so low on a 5 date tour compared to a 46 date tour. If U2 had only done 5 shows in North America, the ticket price would be much higher than just $50 dollars, although I don't know exactly how high it would go.

Thats simply what 5 dollars in that years money equals today. Obviously, a Beatles reunion or Elvis on tour would be much higher in ticket price than the adjusted price level just based on the inflation raised value of the dollar. Again, there have been huge changes in the music industry and the record buying population since that time. While a Beatles tour in 1966 did not completely sellout despite the fact they were the most popular artist around, a Beatles tour in 1984 would have soldout everywhere at a ticket price more comperable to what we see today when adjusted for inflation.

I'm surprised it was only the 18th highest grossing tour of the year. I thought it would have been at least top 10. But then again, they only played 40 shows in North America. The ticket price usually was $13.50.

An interesting note about the Unforgettable Fire tour. When U2 came through Philadelphia and played the Spectrum twice, they soldout both shows, even all seats behind the stage, 18,450 people per night. Something Def Leppard, Metallica, Guns N' Roses, and several other artist never completely did at the peak of their careers. Yet, U2 were doing it with only two albums having been certified platinum in the USA at that time.

So the estimateded gross can be as follow

2nd leg attendance 61.678 * 13,50 = $832,653
4rd leg attendance 577,920 * 13,50 = $7,801,920

Total $8,634,573. Is that a fair estimate?

What are the usualy ticket prices for the Boy, October and War tour?

And Sting2, thans for the gross figures for the Elevation Tour. Great work!!! Hope there are some more figures from that tour.

I think that is a good estimate.

Ticket prices for:

Boy $4
October $6.50
War $10

You are right if you take into account the whole Bridges to Babylon tour but in 1997 (that´s the only year that Popmart visited the US) I´m positive that Popmart was the tour with the higher attendance (it´s a small difference indeed: 100,000 tickets).

Hey thanks for all these figures alexvox! If the source is unknown, did you obtain them from somewhere on the internet? If so, where? Was it an e-mail, another message board, some other place on the internet, a source off the internet, something you had, but forgot what the source was, I'm just curious.

Thanks!

Also, could you post the concert gross for all of these shows as well.

Thanks!

There was 2,000 empty seats at this show, both the arena manager and St. Louis newspaper have gone on record.

It was a very late addition to the tour and there was virtually no print or radio advertising.

Thats true, but those tickets were never officially put on sale for purchase. A show is officially soldout when all tickets put on sale are sold.

Just as long as the U2 concert Chronology book gets the facts straight I'm happy.

U2 deserve their sold out arena tour press releases.

1. It only list ticket price ranges for GIANTS Stadium which is in the New York City market and will naturally have higher ticket prices than other shows in other markets, especially for an event like this.

2. "Expected worldwide gross: up to $150 million from ticket sales, merchandise, TV rights and corporate sponsorships." The concert grosses U2 in the Rolling Stones have in amusement business are from TICKET SALES only!

3. If U2 or the Stones only did 10 shows around the world, they would be able to charge much higher ticket prices

4. The Tenors concerts are a multi-artist bill, while with U2 and the Stones, were only talking about a single artist.

5. I'd like to see official boxscore information, the news articles to often get their facts wrong.

I looked on the u2ticketstubswebsite and saw the following:

Montreal 1-10-87 for $24,50
Toronto 3-10-87 for $27,50
Vancouver 12-11-87 for $26,50
Toronto 24-3-92 $34,33
Vancouver 3/4-11-92 $34,50

I think that's in Canadian dollars. What are the equivalent for these prices in US dollars that time?

Do you have any Amusement Business Boxscore results that actually show 3 Tenors making that much money on the road. U2's September 1997 Boxscore for the Reggio Emilia Italy concert was the largest grossing single show in history at that time, with over 5 million gross from having 150,000 people in attendance.

city - date - venue - gross - capacity - ticket price range

Vancouver - Dec. 31st 1996 - B.C. Place - $5,544,000 - 41,072 -53,830 - $1,450/200/65/32

Toronto - Jan. 4th 1997 - Skydome - $8,000,051 - 50,000 - 50,500 - $1,200/550/73/19

All figures in USD

Over the span of 6 or so years The 3 Tenors played 30 concerts, 14 in North America, 8 in Europe and 8 international.

Figures as posted in Billboard magazine found on microfilm at the Vancouver Central Library. Both were all-time gross records in the weeks they was published. Figures for other 3Ts shows weren't made public. Such was also the case for all Sinatra Stadium shows 1979-1994(quite a few worldwide) and Streisands dizzying monetary figures(many $2,000 tickets) for her 2 Las Vegas NYE and NYD 93/94 appearance

Notice that the Vancouver 12/31/96 Gross is lower than Toronto because they had a ticket clearance sale in the weeks before the show.

<<Italy Popmart was the largest attended single show>>(The U2 Concert Chronology also repeats this claim)

Frank Sinatra performed a single artist bill(w/ orchestra)for 175,000 at the Stadio de Maracana in Rio de Janeiro on January 26th 1980. I cannot find any numbers, but it's a well known fact that the then world biggest stadium had 168,000 seats and several thousand more were on the pitch(FS was center stage) The entire show as televised and the helicopter views are all the proof needed.

Tina Turner was listed in the Guiness Book of World records for having 182,000 people at the Stadio de Maracana in 1988.

Streisand was paid an "8 figure sum"($10mil+) for her 2 Vegas concerts. 13,000 tickets went onsale with the cheapest being $350.
