Of course, I´m talking about USA here.
STING2 said:Your realize though that your ticket prices are in CANADIAN dollars and not in US dollars. U2 had a lower ticket price for their shows in Canada on the POPMART tour than they did for US shows.
40 dollars Canadian was roughly the same as 30 US dollars in 1984.

Does that explain why the Jacksons had a ticket price about double of Bowie or Van Halen? Same Venue about 1 year apart.
Can I see your source for that fact? Did you know that the canadain dollar was once worth more than the US about 15 years ago?
I also find the projected inflation value of $6(1966) = $29(1997) to be on the low side.
Any comment of ticket prices for The 3 Tenors 94-97 US Stadiums shows. Pavarotti is friends with Bono, y'know.

U2FanPeter said:I just find it extremely surprising that it would only cost $20-30 USD to see Elvis(1957) or the Beatles in 2005 dollars.
As for the 3 Tenors, here's were the only shows they performed:
1990 Rome at World Cup(Best Selling CD)
July 1994 - Dodger Stadium live PPV(cd+home video)
June 1996-March 1997 World Tour:
Tokyo
London
Munich
Gothenburg
Vienna
Dusseldorf
Melbourne
NY - Giants Stadium
Toronto - Skydome
Vancouver - BC Place
Houston
Miami
2 shows plus a 12 date World Stadium tour. They were given $90mil for the dozen date tour including upwards of $20mil for Each Tenor(Pavarotti getting the most).
Does this sound familiar to the $100mil tour/$20mil each offer given to U2 for their world tour?
Bono is friends with Pavarotti, y'know.

I'm surprised it was only the 18th highest grossing tour of the year. I thought it would have been at least top 10. But then again, they only played 40 shows in North America. The ticket price usually was $13.50.
An interesting note about the Unforgettable Fire tour. When U2 came through Philadelphia and played the Spectrum twice, they soldout both shows, even all seats behind the stage, 18,450 people per night. Something Def Leppard, Metallica, Guns N' Roses, and several other artist never completely did at the peak of their careers. Yet, U2 were doing it with only two albums having been certified platinum in the USA at that time.

So the estimateded gross can be as follow
2nd leg attendance 61.678 * 13,50 = $832,653
4rd leg attendance 577,920 * 13,50 = $7,801,920
Total $8,634,573. Is that a fair estimate?
What are the usualy ticket prices for the Boy, October and War tour?
And Sting2, thans for the gross figures for the Elevation Tour. Great work!!! Hope there are some more figures from that tour.
STING2 said:
Actually, I think the Bridges To Babylon tour which played shows in 1997/1998/1999 in the USA did come out with a higher attendance total, but I would have to check to make sure.

There was 2,000 empty seats at this show, both the arena manager and St. Louis newspaper have gone on record.
It was a very late addition to the tour and there was virtually no print or radio advertising.

Thats true, but those tickets were never officially put on sale for purchase. A show is officially soldout when all tickets put on sale are sold.

Do you have any Amusement Business Boxscore results that actually show 3 Tenors making that much money on the road. U2's September 1997 Boxscore for the Reggio Emilia Italy concert was the largest grossing single show in history at that time, with over 5 million gross from having 150,000 people in attendance.
If 3 Tenors were given a profit of $90 million dollars from a 12 date tour, than the GROSS figure would have been over $100 million dollars. Probably a GROSS of 10 million dollars per show! I would have to see an amusement business boxscore result to actually believe this. Do you have the dates for the individual shows?
I thought it was 12 shows in North America, but it was only 5 shows in North America. I wonder how much money U2 could have made from just playing 5 shows in North America instead of 46? U2 were able to charge $50 dollars a ticket on POPMART and played to 1.6 million people at 46 shows. But they could substantially increase the ticket price if they only did 5 shows to 250,000 people.
In any event, the two tours are simply not comparable. The price of tickets is artificially raised when the supply of them is so low on a 5 date tour compared to a 46 date tour. If U2 had only done 5 shows in North America, the ticket price would be much higher than just $50 dollars, although I don't know exactly how high it would go.
