A big week for world sales- top 40 sold more than 11 million copies, compared to usual sales of 4-5 million, 35 of the top 40 saw sales increases.

U2 had a decresse of 2.4%, but from such a high starting point they easily retain top spot with sales of 820,000 - making the tally from this source 4.462 million.

Eminem was number 2 with sales at 647,000 - a slight iuncreas ans total sales at around 5.2m.

The end of year chart is next week, but great to see U2 at the top at year end. Will they be able to hold onto top spot in the New Year ?

Vertigo retains the number 2 spot in the singles chart - again, a massive achievement. Unlikely to be equalled by ABOY/Sometimes because of the release startegegies being employed by U2.

It's certified four times platinum in the US right now.......I remember it sold somewhere around 2,000,000 in its first two weeks alone, so I'd estimate the overall sales to be over 3,000,000 so far........

In its first 10 days, Em's new album sold 1.6M copies. U2's sold 1.1M in its first 13 days.

So Em clearly has the lead on U2 based on U.S. sales. The rest of the world is helping U2 catch up. And who knows - maybe the final numbers for U2's and Em's latest in the U.S. won't be too far apart. Many critics hate Em's latest, but love U2's. Plus, U2 will have a huge tour to support them, so...

2004 Year End Charts

The same Global Album and Singles Chart we have been following has some interesting tidbits about total 2004 sales and statistics. According to the 2004 year-end chart, which shows
shows the top forty selling albums of the year, if you want to see them all:

http://www.mediatraffic.de./he

Usher - Confessions
Arista - 12.450.000 copies (preliminary estimate)
Norah Jones - Feels Like Home
Blue Note - 10.022.000 copies
Evanescence - Fallen
Wind-Up - 7.602.000 copies
Avril Lavigne - Under My Skin
Arista - 7.270.000 (preliminary estimate)
Black Eyed Peas - Elephunk
A&M / Interscope - 7.218.000 copies
Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane
Octone / J Records - 6.920.000 copies (preliminary estimate)
Eminem - Encore
Shady / Interscope - 6.320.000 copies (preliminary estimate)
U2 - How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
Island - 5.810.000 copies (preliminary estimate)

U2 comes in at 8 with 5.810 albums sold. The sales estimate for U2, for all of 2004, is based on 5 weeks. Eminem is in "week 6", and has 6.3M albums sold versus 5.8M U2 Albums sold. I think there is a legitmate chance that U2 and Eminem will be 1-2 in total album sales in 2005. I think it's reasonable to expect 10-12M global sales for HTDAAB next year, with the tour, singles, awards shows, etc. Ironically, HTDAAB will get a ton of grammy nominations in the Fall of 2005. That will give the album a sales bump. Then, shortly after the world tour, HTDAAB wins 4-6 grammies and cracks the top 10 (at least in the U.S.) for one final serious chart run. I'm starting to believe the hype.

***********************************************

Also, according to this source, U2's HTDAAB had the 2nd highest opening week for global sales. Impressive indeed!

biggest sales in a week (albums)

1. Norah Jones - Feels Like Home 1.920.000 copies (week 9, 2004)
2. U2 - How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb 1.854.000 copies (week 50, 2004)
3. Linkin Park - Meteora 1.560.000 copies (week 15, 2003)
4. Elvis Presley - 30 Number 1 Hits 1.480.000 copies (week 41, 2002)
5. Eminem - Encore 1.475.000 copies (week 49, 2004)
6. Hikaru Utada - Single Collection Vol.1 1.404.000 copies (week 16, 2004)
7. Usher - Confessions 1.390.000 copies (week 15, 2004)

Re: 2004 Year End Charts

Looks liek Media Traffice came up with the numbers after estimating sales for the final 2 weeks of 2004.

They are estimating 1.35 Million in these two weeks

The pre Xmas week sales are pretty much known.

Looks like about 950,000 this week and 400,000 for the last week of the year.

We now know exactly how much the Eminem record has sold thanks to the other thread....3,319,332 to U2's 2,061,297....so that puts U2 roughly 1.25 million behind Eminem in the United States......I don't think the band will close the gap by much outside of the tour, which should help a bit....Eminem is still going to get constant MTV exposure and radio airplay, whereas it's harder for U2 to break onto the waves......I don't think we'll see them beating Eminem this time around, but I can guarantee that by the time the next U2 album is in stores, it won't even be close.

Worldwide though, "Bomb" should beat Eminem's new one.

What are the total sales after 5 weeks?
After the 4th week, I Think it was 4.462 million.

But I don't think that the bomb sold 1.400.000 in one week?!
Last week, it was 4.400.000 and now 5.800.000.

the estimate is most likely based on a 2 weeks' prediction...the last 2 weeks of the year

Total sales

I read in another post that the actual global sales for week 5 came in at 950K, so that would mean the estimate for next week is around 450K to hit the 5.81 M albums sold.

Assuming HTDAAB did sell 950K, then the best estimate of current, known sales is 5.35M albums sold based on this global chart. I'm sure it does not capture all sales, but I do think it's the best thing we've got unless Dr. Who or STING2 gives us one of their comprehensive world estimates.

we should find out actual sales from mediatraffic later today.

I would put the sales at about 6 million with no signs of slowing down. Cant complain about that at all.
