Of course Florida and Arizona both went to shit in the last month so either bubble would have failed miserably anyway, but surprised they didn't start out with a bubble plan.
It was presented as an option. The union shot it down.

Of course it would be Manfred + the Marlins fucking up.

Quote:
Multiple sources confirmed that the Marlins played despite having three players learn Sunday that they’d tested positive for COVID-19, just two days after a fourth player learned of a positive test on Friday. Two infectious-disease specialists told The Athletic on Sunday that those positive tests fit the definition of a “clear outbreak” of the virus within their team. But sources said those tests were not enough for either Major League Baseball or the club itself to give serious consideration to postponing this game.

How in the hell did they KNOW that there were positive tests and play anyways? It seemed like both teams knew, and the Yankees knew as well.

How dumb so you have to be?

I don't have time to retrace the timeline, but I think the news that additional players had tested positive came in the course of the day, and then Mattingly confirmed it around game time. This was public reporting. I think the Yankees and Orioles found out the extent later or this morning when the 7-8 additional cases were reported.

MLB 2020- Coronavirus Version

https://t.co/fHr8O5etO7

So fucking stupid.

Quote:

Major League Baseball issued a 113-page operations manual to all club employees before the start of the season. It outlines everything from on-field rules to testing procedures and what happens if a player tests positive. But Sunday afternoon, the status of the game amid a coronavirus outbreak was decided by a group text-message between Marlins players.

Just ridiculously dumb. How is it even an option for the players to decide? Every other league it's in the hands of independent medical staff.

Both teams knew that the Marlins had a bunch of positive tests before the game even began, and nobody said "hey, maybe this game shouldn't happen?"

It goes beyond "it's not a bubble" dumb. It's "the protocols worked but we just ignored them" dumb .

That has to be the most idiotic thing I've ever read. That whole article is full of the dumbest effing quotes I've ever read. This is not playing through an injury or a loss of a team member or something. This is knowingly endangering every person that is involved in the game, recklessly without regard for how they might feel about it.

You don't sound like a badass saying you never considered canceling the game.

I don't know that I want that to happen, but a third party needs to get involved immediately.

This bullshit with taking an expedited test after testing positive, like Soto, for example, and then being allowed to immediately play again is just asking for trouble.

God, I thought the UFC were fucking up with their protocols at the beginning, but at least they fixed the holes they had and things have proceeded pretty well. And that's a full contact sport.

We're talking about baseball, this game should be a no-brainer, easy sport in comparison, but...people are dumb.

Oh, so we actually had the choice to play Juan Soto this weekend (and be total assholes)? Thanks, Marlins.

Maybe Juan got shut out of the group text and didn't know he was cleared to play.

Didi Gregorious is considered to be a vulnerable athlete under the MLB's protocols. And he was there, standing in the batter's box, next to a catcher who may have been infectious. So fucking stupid.

I get why the MLB couldn't do the bubble environment. Games are too frequent, too long, outdoors, so the infrastructure is virtually impossible to manage. But this is a joke.

But is it impossible? Why couldn't they have done it at the Spring training locations? Too hot?

That’s what I understand - and that was even before Arizona and Florida became clusterfucks. They have one domed stadium in Arizona and would have to play outdoors in 110 weather to make the schedule work. Two domed stadiums in Florida (if the Trop counts as a stadium).

How do you run a 15-game daily schedule in this environment even disregarding the mess those states are in. Maybe California could have worked between LA and SF/Oakland but still. The daily schedule is tough.
