The more I think about it... if the Marlins get Reyes then ideally the only thing stopping them from being a powerhouse (other than the obvious pitching question marks) is Logan Morrison developing.

If you think about it...

Reyes
Infante
Ramirez
Stanton
Sanchez
Morrison
Bonifacio
Buck
[Pitcher]

Pretty solid... each player really ideally fits the role in the lineup. Assuming Bonifacio cools off from a hot season, him and Buck are really the only players who are less than great at bat if Logan Morrison can play to his potential. But go figure, they still fit fine as a #7/8 hitter in an ideal lineup.

The possible signing of Reyes does not mean that the Marlins have completed their Christmas shopping, because they are also interested in Albert Pujols.
A source also told ESPNDeportesLosAngeles.com that Miami has emerged as the most likely destination for Pujols if the slugger decides to leave the St. Louis Cardinals, the only team he has played for in his 11-year career.
I want to believe...

But even if that's true I'd much rather have Buehrle or Wilson than Pujols. That lineup that I posted is good enough. The pitching rotation of Johnson|Sanchez|Nolasco|Vazquez?|Sanabia/Hand is not.

If Pujols is signed, Sanchez could be traded for a pitcher.

Well yeah, that's definitely what will happen. Likely they'd be thinking along the line of James Shields who was rumored about earlier. Gio Gonzalez has also been rumored about, too (although that'd take more).

But the more things you've gotta do to achieve that, the less likely it's going to happen. Realistically, our bullpen is set. Our lineup is set given that we get Reyes (which is by no means guaranteed, either).

Our rotation is not one but two pitchers away from being legitimate. Which is why I'd actually be happy to have Javier Vazquez coming back, really. If he doesn't, there's not much else available in his price range that will make us any better, even with trades. As it stands right now, both Alex Sanabia and Brad Hand hold a spot in our rotation. Neither of them should be on any team in the major leagues.

I lied.

According to MLBNetwork and Ken Rosenthal, Jose Reyes has agreed to a deal with the Miami Marlins.

I lied again.

False reports, 'close to signing' a 6 year, $110 million deal.

I'm curious as to how that will shape the potential deal for Rollins.

Lol Rosenthal with a nice little funny bit:

We had Rollins on the cheap for the past few years, mostly because he has an awful agent. Reyes setting the market limits the ability for teams to dupe him again, though. That and the fact that it might be a competition between the Phils and the Fielder-less Brewers.

Well I don't even think the Marlins won a bidding war on Reyes. They didn't give him the NTC he wanted and the deal was about $10m off of what it was originally reported as. I think it was more of a case of Miami riding the rave from the Heath Bell signing.

And now that both Reyes and Bell are in Miami, Buehrle's gotta be taking us seriously. Reports are the Marlins are a favorite for Buehrle. Reports also saying if Albert Pujols leaves St. Louis, Miami is the front runner.

I'm glad they weren't bluffing. I'd be okay with this being it (so long as they make a decent starting rotation, one way or another).

Even after signing Reyes, #Marlins now plan to make aggressive push to sign Pujols, sources say. More to come at ESPN.com

The free agent compensation system is a joke. The Mets will only get a third rounder from the Marlins. Should have traded him last year.

Happy, sad Ron Santo finally gets Hall call - SweetSpot Blog - ESPN

Bittersweet, but I think we all knew it would happen this way. I'm glad this day finally came.

Why it's even implemented is what I don't understand...

I'm much more of a fan of the NHL style UFA/RFA stuff.

the marlins will be paying a shortstop who relies on his legs, who couldn't keep his legs healthy in his 20's, 16+ million per year well into his 30's. enjoy.

well... correction. SOMEONE will be paying jose reyes 16+ million per well into his 30's, likely some combination of the marlins and whomever they inevitably trade him to when they blow the team up again in a three years.

Very unexpected trade here. We've shipped Sergio Santos, our young stud closer whose contract we extended in September, to Toronto for one of their young stud pitching prospects. A guy named Nestor Molina.

Nobody saw this coming at all. Santos was in line to be our closer for the next two or three years at least. Or at least that's what everyone thought. Crazy talented kid.

I'm not angry about the move or anything because it seems we got good talent in return...it's just that I'm very surprised by it. Hmmm. I have a feeling this could be just the first in an extremely busy trading offseason for the Sock.
