The idea that there's one essential album everyone must hear is IMO rather preposterous.

I agree with this. But still, it's fun seeing what people choose.

Is there more essential music out there? Even in the realm of rock, absolutely. Doesn't mean it's not the most "essential" in regards to my personal tastes and what not, though.

It's interesting how most people interpret "The most essential album" as "post your favourite album from you fav / a recent band".
