The Flaming Lips

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Finally got my Embryonic vinyl. The yellow and blue discs are beautiful, but they're a little thin. Would've liked 180g, but I'm not going to complain.

Now I'm finally going to be able to sit down and get acquainted with this album.

Not only does the fetus make you smarter, but it also makes you more likely to view hentai porn.

I'm listening to this for the first time now. I BEST BE PREPARED.

You'd best be prepared to give Embryonic a few plays. Not simply because it's necessary to truly appreciate the sonic depth of the album, but because of how hooked you'll be by its atmosphere and its way with making seriously dark, heavy shit a lot of fun.

Second half is stronger than the first, so if you find it a bit tiring at first, hang in there.

I'm not a big Flaming Lips fan: most of the albums I've heard have seemed spotty. Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi were pretty good, but I wasn't a big fan of Mystics or Transmissions.

I'm digging this, though. It seems more consistent than I'm used to hearing from them.

Have you heard Clouds Taste Metallic? It's their most enjoyable album, for me.

The Dark Side of the Moon cover album was released on iTunes today. Interesting stuff. I actually can't stand DSOM normally, but this was a trippier (is that possible?) and more fucked up version. I dig it.

Wait, so is this an iTunes only release? If that's the case, I'll need to hope some random Christmas well wisher got me that most misguided of gifts, an iTunes card.

People seem to be hating on the Rollins stuff, and I must say...I cannot even BEGIN to imagine his being within 100 yards of this thing turning out as anything other than a complete and total disaster. I'm curious, but probably not curious enough to investigate.

Yup, and I refuse to support iTunes, out of principle, I mean, who wants to buy a bunch of files? I'd rather get the physical release any day, which conveniently doesn't exist...and, this is why some people will continue to illegally download things. :shifty:

I didn't even notice him that much on it, to be honest. Which is excellent, considering the immense dislike I have for him.

Rollins is coming to Penn State for a show in a couple months!

any idea whether it's ever going to be physical released?

otherwise it's off to buy an itunes card!

No. Again, it's going to be an iTunes only release. Supposedly exclusively on iTunes until December 28th, according to the page in the iTunes store.

EDIT: Okay, after digging around for approximately .08 seconds on Google, it's going to be a digital album only, with probable movement to other digital retailers after the iTunes exclusive time period is finished.

so what did you all think of their Dark Side cover?

for what it's worth i think it was pretty good. Breathe just sounded like an Embryonic leftover, and the vocoder they used in The Impulse they used in Money. Any Colour You Like and Eclipse were pretty decent though.

i also got The Soft Bulletin over the break - and thought it was pretty damn good, Race for the Prize especially.

I've heard 3 or 4 of the tracks on the radio, and wasn't particularly impressed with any of them.

I'd rather hear Floyd do Floyd and Lips do Lips.

That sounds dirty.

so....which version of Soft Bulletin should i get. i see there was a surround sound version, but i don't have surround sound speakers, so that's out of the question. but there was a 2006 "demastered" version. what the hell...eh?

If your version has two versions of Waiting For Superman and Race For The Prize, it's the original. If it has Slow Motion, it's the 2006 version.

Get the surround version. It comes with the CD and a DVD, if I'm not mistaken, including all of the tracks that were on the US and UK releases.

My copy doesn't come with the "Remixes" of Buggin', Waiting For A Superman, or Race For The Prize. Only the original versions.

It's a pretty unremarkable disc. I liked Stardeath's take on "Time," since it kind of retains the sublime feel of the original track while still being something different. The rest of it was weird for the sake of being weird, without any of the emotional undercurrent that's in the Floyd Dark Side.
