I'm assuming it's the label's decision, but at the same time, I doubt the Flaming Lips didn't know it was going to happen.

Hmm, well I know that iTunes pricing now is dependent on the popularity of the tracks, so maybe after the full album comes out it'll go down? I don't know.

Didn't they change the pricing structure so that the unprotected tracks are higher, and the ones still locked/protected are lower?
Or did they "unlock" all their mp3s? Oh and hey, I'm going to see them next Friday. Whoot! |

You're welcome. I think they did away with the 69 cent option, too.
Thanks, Warner Music Group. |

A 30% hike seems a bit much. I realize it's $.30 we're talking about, but that's at least a $3 difference in price for most albums. Did they honestly REALLY think they weren't making enough at $1 per song? It's digital, the record company doesn't even have to do anything other than send them the files, some artwork, and maybe a little blurb. That requires a 30% rate hike? It'd be one thing if it was 5% or 10%, I have a hard time thinking the pricing was really off by so much that 30% was necessary.

Embryonic. October 13.
![]() Yes. That is indeed the cover, and it's one of the best ones I've seen in a while. Listen to "See the Leaves" now: Pitchfork: Hear the New Flaming Lips Song "See the Leaves". It's the fucking JAM. |

That looks like Natalie Portman on the album cover.

Just pay the great art. 0.30 is nothing. Go get worked up about something else.

No one's getting worked up about three dimes, but think of what the ramifications of a 30% price hike are in the long term. It's still turning a $9.99 iTunes album into a $12.99 one. Apply the same principle to the inevitable 2xLP, which would likely land somewhere around the $25 area. Suddenly you have a $32.50 album.
It's about the greater trends here. |

That album cover's pretty hideous. I can't say I understand the trend of musicians creating album covers with just as much weird and unintelligible shit as possible thrown together with some B-grade graphic design.

Four songs, all strong. Embryonic is shaping up to be excellent. Love the cover, but shame about the two week delay. I'm sure it'll leak sooner.

Did I already make the joke about that cover looking like Lance coming out of the womb?
If not, consider it made. |

Probably, but either way, I'm sure all of us had that idea by now.

For a second I thought the Lips were releasing a cover of Radiocock's Harry Patch.

So, has anybody else heard the B-sides from Embryonic? They were released along with the first 3 song EP.
3 more songs: "Anything You Say Now, I Believe You" - Loving this track a lot. It's classic existential Flaming Lips. And, its instrumentation is mostly acoustic noodling, which is awesome. "UFOs Over Baghdad" - Starts out with "Taps," which they've been doing live as a tribute for awhile now, at least at two of the shows I saw last year. Pretty lush-sounding, similar to how the Soft Bulletin was. Wayne's voice sounds particularly good too, which is a nice change. "What Does It Mean?" - Has a nice driving bass line and talks about infinity and death wishes. All in all, I might like these songs better than the ones we've got from the album already. Mostly though, it's just making me even more anxious for Embryonic to drop. |

I've been trying to find the setlist from Friday's Seattle show. I know the new song they played was the one with "Hex" in the title. It was good.
