Okay, I'm a big Manchester-phile, really into so many of the bands that defined Manchester during the 70s, 80s, 90s. But one band that I never seem to have got round to emersing myself in are The Fall.

A main reason for this I think is there sheer quantity of albums. So if there are any Fall fans out there, could you either comprise a 'Best Of' playlist or what their best album you think is, so that hopefully I might finally grow to like them.

Thanks all.

I've had much the same problem, so I'm afraid I can't help too much. I've heard a few albums though, and have to say that they seem terribly bland and overrated. At least Mark E. Smith is likable.

I put the Fall in two groups. Pre & post Brix Smith (and then the after Brix left part, which I've never kept up on). Post Brix is more accessible and pop punk in style. Songs like C.R.E.E.P. and Mr Pharmacist would give you a good start. I prefer the more difficult pre-era. Mark's lyrics are really the focal point and it takes many listens just to decipher what he's saying. Sarcastic & witty. And the music can be tough to take. Probably more in line with what the punk movement was about, not the Ramones style that most groups ended up taking. I'd go with live tracks first, my favorite album being Fall In A Hole, Live in New Zealand '82. Has their most consistent set of songs and their best lineup (imo) of Smith, the Hanley bros, Scanlon & Marc Riley.

Impression of J. Temperance, Man Whose Head Expanded, Room to Live, Hip Priest, Lie Dream of a Casino Soul come in a row on this album and a strong stretch of songs. In A Hole also includes The Classical and English Scheme, a couple more faves.

I like the song Totally Wired a lot.

But honestly, most people don't like these guys. Kinda understandable, much of their extensive output is annoying. A repetitive drone, as a short description.

Hope that helps, Mikey. If your still interested.

They annoy me. And annoyed me when we saw them. But a couple of songs are bearable, like Totally Wired would be one of them...
