I know it came out 12 years ago.. and took even longer than that to be recorded before it finally came out in 2008 but I’m finally forcing myself to sit and listen to Guns n’ Roses Chinese Democracy album.

The first 3 songs sound like WWE wrestler entrance themes.

The actual recording of the album is actually an interesting read and more interesting than the actual album..

“By this point, Buckethead had left, following disagreements with Baker and frustrations over the band's lack of progress. Zutaut persuaded him to rejoin by installing a giant chicken coop in the studio for Buckethead to work in, with furniture, straw, chicken wire, and rubber chicken parts. Zutaut described it as "part chicken coop, part horror movie ... you could almost smell the chickens".

However, according to Zutaut, the coop caused friction when Buckethead began using it to watch hardcore pornography, disturbing Rose. Zutaut told an interviewer that, after one of Rose's dogs defecated in the coop, Buckethead insisted it not be cleaned up as he liked the smell. After three days, the smell had become overwhelming and the studio staff removed it, upsetting Buckethead.”

Also there’s a whole re-recorded version of Appetite for Destruction by the newish lineup from 1999 that was shelved. That would be weird to listen to.

I am still bitter about the Dr. Pepper thing:

Dr. Pepper said that if Chinese Democracy ever came out, they'd give everyone in the U.S. (Except Slash and Buckethead) a free Dr. Pepper.

I told everyone and their brother about this and knew several people who took advantage of it, but that day ended up being kinda crazy for me with school and work, and I ended up not getting my free Chinese Democracy Dr. Pepper.

If you went to Best Buy anytime in 2008 to 2009 you probably saw tons of Chinese Democracy CDs and even vinyl.. Best Buy purchased over 1 million copies of the album.

In 2010 they all ended up in discount bins.

Anyway. There are a couple good songs. It’s dated. There’s glimmers of old GnR in there. But yeah, it’s also bloated and messy too.

Buckethead is one weird dude.
Saw them live with him in the band one time (2002 I think), Michael Myers mask and KFC bucket. Tossed little toys into the audience at one point.
But the guy can play.

I still have never listened to Chinese Democracy. I never considered it a GnR album. It was a completely different group, aside from Dizzy Reed, that happened to also be led by Axl.

Chinese Democracy isn’t a true GNR album. It’s Axl N’ Friends.

There are some great songs on the album.

It suffered in popularity due to the fact they put it out as a “Guns N Roses” album.

And, all the horseshit surrounding the recording process, length of time it took, revolving door of musicians, and bitterness over the Axl/Slash feud.

If you throw on some good headphones and listen without those garbage filters, you may hear an epic record.

Since the real GNR got back together and have played a lot of the album live, a lot of fans who refused to listen or panned it previously, are giving it another shot and loving it.

In fact “circle the drain” is the SOTY.

I Know the End isn’t even the best song on its album (I still love it, just find it a bit on the nose for an album closer).

We Will Always Love You, is, as LM has just outlined, fucking outstanding. Fantastic record. I think it's a lot better than Wildflower, which had a bunch of great songs but was never really that enjoyable as an album in my eyes. This one lacks the standouts, but it doesn't really need them, it all sounds so fucking good back to back. I didn't dig the singles they released but they make complete sense in the context of the record. Good. as.

Wildflower is one of my favorite albums of all time, but the singles from WWALY muted my expectations, which turns out to have been a good thing. They just aren't a singles band, which is fine, because they are one hell of an album band. It's so fluid and engaging as a full album listen, even at 71 minutes. I love how melancholy yet hopeful these songs are, refusing to give up on people and on love, even when keeping the faith seems naive.

I see people talking about song of the year, and yet I don't see the word "Jody" next to it...

Maybe I should give Avalanches a chance. The only song of theirs I’ve consciously heard is Frontier Psychiatrist.

Yes, you should. Frontier Psychiatrist is great and heaps of fun, but not really that representative of what they do. Since I Left You is a masterpiece, a record I listen to very regularly, and where you should start. I suspect you will enjoy Wildflower a great deal.

In the spirit of listening to notorious albums that were considered bad and whatever.. after listening to Chinese Democracy I’m now diving deep into Chris Cornell’s 2009 Timbaland produced album “Scream”...

Oof.
