Lifes Rich Pageant is my favourite by a wide margin. Rarely did an album have 4 opening songs that were so powerful.
Murmur, New Adventures in Hi-Fi, Reckoning and Fables follow. |

I was wrong, saw them 3 times.
With any luck, this means the Buckstar will be playing more gigs with his heroes, like Robyn Hitchcock, and playing small clubs, so I can see him up close and personal again... ![]() |

This really makes me sad. I so badly wanted to see them live one more time. Back in 2003 my ex girlfriend "drug" me to an REM concert. I only knew the hits, so I wanted to better familiarize myself before the show. This resulted in one of the greatest musical experiences of my life. The deeper I dug, the deeper I wanted to keep digging. This amazing back catalog opened up before me, and in that month leading up to the concert I became a hardcore fan. I had no idea they'd be such a great live band either, but they truly were. I saw REM once more after that, 2004 Cincinnati.
I feel that the post Bill Berry stuff gets a bad rap. Granted, REM lost that "BAND" quality after that, but they still made some amazing music. I actually really like Around the Sun and find Out of Time to be their worst album... call me crazy. The best, for me anyway, is 82-87 the IRS years. Will be listening to a lot of REM in the coming weeks now, which I'm really looking forward to. Thanks to them for 30 years of great music! |

This is such a shame because I thought they were finding their groove again. Around The Sun was godawful, but I thought Accelerate and Collapse Into Now were both good albums. They'll be missed.

Theirs is an interesting recorded output in that I've never really been sure what their best album is. I would probably say that
Murmur Lifes Rich Pageant (love the lack of an apostrophe!) Green Automatic For The People New Adventures in Hi-Fi are all my favorites, equally. Reckoning, Document, Out of Time, and Monster would be slightly lesser efforts (but still great). Fables of The Reconstruction never really clicked with me, and of the post-Berry albums I'm only familiar with Up and Reveal, both of which are good but not great -- way over-produced, for one thing. |

While I could see REM getting together for maybe the sake of a benefit or a special concert. I couldn't see them getting together for a full blown reunion tour. I feel fortunate to have seen them 3 times, with two of those shows being at MSG. They were an awesome live band.

Eponymous was my first REM cassette. I really liked it at the time.
My favourite era had to be 94-95 with Monster and HiFi. Let Me In, Crush with Eyeliner and of course, Ebow the Letter. I saw them in 2001 on a street and 2004 at Cobo Hall. Both were sub-u2 but still enjoyable. Someone I know engineered the Murmur Deluxe edition tracks so it is easy forget that this was once a small little band that could. And also lets not forget the huge debt every Indie band post 1990 owes to REM. |
