I'm about to go on a bit of a Wu-Tang bender here in a minute. 36 Chambers and Liquid Swords back-to-back.

currently playing
wutang's 36 chambers and a soda maks a rivetting combination,
the jams are so badass you don't even need anything else to elevate it,
music does it on its own, plus i like caffeine.

and perhaps a more embarassing moment is that
i recently discovered The Streets, and at first it didn't have much
response from me besides an eyeroll and then it totally grew on me
it was difficult to take seriously at first, but now I am curious to hear
other albums since I only have Original Pirate Material,
which ic probably not appropriate for a thread with the word
purist in it, but fuck, album is quite captivating

Dave and I were discussing a future hip-hop DI mini-game, so I decided to get back to work on a playlist I've been tweaking. Here's what I've got so far:

1. Jay-Z - Can't Knock The Hustle
2. Black Star - Astronomy (8th Light)
3. Outkast - Aquemini
4. Cannibal Ox - Iron Galaxy
5. Spank Rock - Rick Rubin
6. A Tribe Called Quest - Buggin' Out
7. Nas - Halftime
8. Run-D.M.C. - It's Tricky
9. Beastie Boys - High Plains Drifter
10. Madvillain - Figaro
11. Dr. Dre - Nuthin' But A "G" Thang
12. De La Soul - Pass The Plugs
13. Kanye West - Addiction
14. Notorious B.I.G. - Machine Gun Funk
15. Mobb Deep - Shook Ones Pt. II
16. Wu-Tang Clan - C.R.E.A.M.
17. Lupe Fiasco - Kick, Push
18. The Streets - Weak Become Heroes

My friend picked up the Spike Jones music video collection DVD when they were released 4 or 5 years back. I hadn't heard this song until then, and I immediately fell in love with it and the video. I seem to get addicted to it on an annual basis. Been digging it again for the last week or so, figured I'd post the video. (make sure to click on the HQ button for HD)

YouTube - fatlip-"whats up fat lip?"

Hope you enjoy.

Yes! Dude, Fat Lip is the shit. He was in the Pharcyde, who are probably my favorite hip-hop group ever. Their first two albums are amazing and are considered kind of classics in the genre, I think. You should buy them.

I began a look into the wonders of the world of hip-hop this past month. My first four albums:

Kanye West - The College Dropout
Kanye West - Late Registration
Kanye West - Graduation
The Roots - Things Fall Apart

Where do I go from here?

Public Enemy, Fear of a Black Planet
Public Enemy, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
A Tribe Called Qwest, The Low-End Theory
De La Soul, 3 Feet High and Rising
NWA, Straight Outta Compton
The Roots, Illadelph Halflife

Oh, snap! Both a new mixtape and a confirmation of the cover/tracklisting for Crime Pays! No homo, son!

DIPSET.

Cam'Ron is wack. That is all.

pfan, also make sure to grab Illmatic by Nas. It's his debut album, and singlehandedly responsible for turning me from a casual hip hop fan into a diehard. Some other recommendations:

Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt
Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die
Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
Black Moon - Enta Da Stage
Black Star - Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are...
Method Man & Redman - Blackout!
Eric B. & Rakim - Follow the Leader
Tupac - All Eyez on Me
Common - Like Water for Chocolate
Dr. Dre - The Chronic
Gang Starr - Hard to Earn
Boogie Down Productions - Criminal Minded
Binary Star - Masters of the Universe

Combined with laz's suggestions, you have a good list of essential hip hop albums here. You could start with any of these.

Illmatic is nasty-good. Listened to it quite a bit, last week.

Still, Cam is the King of Harlem (ie, all Creation), and you just can't mess with them shits. Ain't nobody else street enough to shoot hisself in the arm just to lend credibility to his made-up story of getting carjacked...while driving a purple Lamborghini around D.C..

Seriously, though, that new mixtape shouldn't be nearly as GREAT as it is. Really surprisingly genius stuff, on the mo'fucker. I was about as amped for Killa Season as is possible, but felt really let down. "I.B.S." notwithstanding, of course. This new tape puts the strong-but-overlong Public Enemy #1 one to shame, and I'm officially re-stoked for Crime Pays. Purple Haze is so good that it hurts, and I'd like to see Killa back at that level of ballerosity.

Black Star - Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are...
Tupac - All Eyez on Me
Common - Like Water for Chocolate

Those are definitely essentials. I'd also get Mos Def's Black on Both Sides.

IYS, funny you mention "I.B.S."...it's pretty much the only thing by Cam'Ron that I can stand.

Very versatile and, again, fucking insane, here. Yet another good insight into from where Weezy gets his (comparatively watered-down) shit:

YouTube - Cam'ron - Just Us

"My crew ain't nothin' but candles--yeah, we sittin' on cake."

"But I seen Brenda,
143rd and Lennox--
dirty kitchen.
Back of the bird behind.
You heard me, hon--
she 31.
Gave her a sanchez.
Yes, a dirty one."

Brutal.

He's got zero flow.
