but what does the word "shalom" mean?

I believe it means peace

Shalom has multiple meanings as a greeting or farwell.

"Peace" is a primary meaning. It also means wholeness or fullness of life.

I remember being taught a hymn at school "Shalom Chaverin", Jewish in origin I think. Can't remember exactly what it meant though.

I believe "Shalom" was also the Christian group that Bono and Edge once belonged to in the early early days.
