I am studying W.B. Yeats poetry at the moment and our teacher read us a really nice poem the other day called "When you are old" I really like it so I thought I would share it with you guys

When You Are Old

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

ah I actually knew (well, I knew it existed) that one

great poem indeed

Yeats is the greatest poet ever and I love all his poems (the ones I've read properly, that is). I like his later poems even better, though--this is an earlier one. Check out the "Byzantium" poems. Unbelievable.

That's odd. The words seem happy but I feel so sad reading them.

grrr, I think Shakespeare is the greatest poet ever scattero (sometimes great poetry can appear within the text of prose)

though Yeats is certainly a master...

I agree with what foray said

Shakespeare is Shakespeare and I revere him...but I love Yeats so much. For me, it's kind of like Mozart and the Beatles. Mozart is Mozart, the Beatles are the Beatles, but I would rather listen to Beethoven (not to mention Chopin) or Led Zeppelin (not to mention U2).

But I do love Shakespeare. Hey, someone needs to get the favourite poems thread going again. Maybe I will but I started it so it looks like an ego trip for me
