a friend told me Nylon was named so because it was invented simultaneously in New York and London. I don't know how much truth there is to that but that's the seed of this confused little flower. Something about the air raids on Britain during WW2, and an unexpected reference to Annie: The Musical. Don't ask, I didn't plan it...

NYLON BLUES

Damascus off,
and running again,
I'll find a place to hide my face
from futures;
under hedges of bets parlayed,
over pledges of debts waylaid
until fortune puts my thumb in the pie--
one whisky for a red-eye
flight from and to and one and two;
step and turn Miss Molly,
o'golly g-forces her into my lap
and it's broomsticks on me coonskin cap;
the punishment to last but didn't--
chin takes it on the more you chaff
and readies for the Luftwaffe

bombs away we go to market;
can't find the car--
where did she park it?
overturned cart and spinning wheel,
a broken doll arm,
streaks of sooty blemish
and gravel in the gears;
huddle close together dears:
another crime's a comin'

it's a hard knot tight/porous;
see-through skins and shirts,
joints scraped in the dirt
in knee'd of elbow rooms for rent;
bring a tent if you've got one--
this sun sets on the whetted appetite.
