Have we amongst the Heavens
A lesser muse
That has not been us'd up
By the immortal giants
From whose comparisons I shrink?
A mortal muse with feet of clay,
Perhaps one prone to drink
Or not in the fullest command
Of his faculties,
Who might deign to catch within
Me, a glimpse of hope
To make worth of his while,
Or leastways accept me as his
Penance, a demi-muse perhaps,
Seeking as I seek, the ranks
Of the noble to which we aspire,
Lofty inspirations we clutch
With suspicion against
Those who would break our wings
Before we learn to fly.
