You offer me
Bits and pieces of your soul
Chance glimpses
Of the depths of your psyche
A whispered word
Like autumn's caress
I clutch it in winter's solitude
You offer me
Stolen moments, soothing your
Departure with murmured promises
Of gossamer sand
I close my eyes, pressing out
The truth I cannot acknowledge
Lulling my heart with imagery of
Your gentle lips and urgent hands
Weaving my fantasy world into
Molds long cast by girlish fancy
Futile to imagine a world
Without you as its nucleus
I content myself instead to arrange
My existence around the perimeters
Of your life
You stir beside me in the twilight
Of half sleep
I feel your lips on my forehead
Your caress on my shoulder
Then you are swallowed up by
Shadows, gone home to your wife,
Leaving fragmented dreams
Of happily ever after.
