a neon sign greets strangers
"welcome to Cow Town, USA"
broken concrete gives way to
cobblestoned roads with potholes
weeds and tumbleweeds, and
boys like weeds stand next to
old liquor stores

rumble into town, muffler drags
the engine hisses, the top goes down
crank the door open and hinges grind
half-shaven, half-drunken, wholy
stumbled into the church doorway

kneeled on one knee, over-gesture the genoflex
"Sweet Lord Jesus, please take me home"
gravelly voice whispers slovenly into the air
an old reverend stands at the back of the church
"You can be forgiven, son"
stand to leave, shoving $100 in his hand

drag into the bar, drink a drop of poison
pull back dusty hair and crunch together the jacket
hand gestures towards her invite
seem to say "not this time"
this is not a sweet time, its a race against time
desire, drive, desire, drive, desire, drive...
simple motivation for a complicated fuck-up

climb into the cadillac and grind into drive
pull onto the highway, feel the voodoo spell continue its hold
think "I love these empty towns" and keep on down the road.
next stop new mexico.

Too many cowboy movies, too many born wilds, too much James Dean and Clint. They just don't make them like that anymore, do they?
