Fancy and Desire:

Come hither, shepard swain!

Sir, what do you require?

I pray thee shew to me thy name!

My name is Fond Desire.

When wert thou born, Desire?

In pomp and prime of May.

By whom, sweet boy, wert thou begot?

By fond Conceit, men say.

Tell me who was thy nurse?

Fresh youth, in sugared joy.

What was thy meat and daily food?

Sad sighs with great annoy.

What hadst thou then to drink?

Unfeigned lovers' tears.

What cradle wert thou rocked in?

In hope devoid of fears.

What lulled thee then asleep?

Sweet speech, wich likes me best.

Tell me where is thy dwelling-place?

In gentle hearts I rest.

What thing doth please thee most?

To gaze on beauty still.

Whom dost thou think to be thy foe?

Disdain of my good will.

Doth company displease?

Yes, surely, many one.

When doth Desire delight to live?

He loves to live alone.

Doth either time or age

Bring him into decay?

No, no! Desire both lives and dies

A thousand times a day.

Then, Fond Desire, farewell!

Thou art no mate for me;

I should be loath, methinks, to dwell

With such a one as thee.

According to my Dumpster Collection, it's titled correctly. Although he was a great poet, most of his work was lost. If you happen to find any links, please pass them on! I have been lazy

(Some history of my dumpster book collection.) It's a set of books, from 1881, and is titled "The library of choice literature." The set has 8 volumes, and I found them, in perfect condition, in a "Dumpster."

Although fond desire has been titled on line, I wonder if it's right. Now you've given me something to do.

Perhaps you may find it interesting that most of shakespeare's work was done in the same handwriting as edward de vere, and the debate is still alive.

Personally, I love the work, and have no real issue as to who is the true author. But upon reading the link you've sent, I wonder when or why the change happened. The first link I read, concerning the debate, had fancy and desire as title of this particular work. Not to mention that it is the only entry of edward in my dumpster books.

You see, one is fancy, and the other is desire. I believe the title is fitting as such. Fond Desire doesn't fit because the first is one of breeding, and and the second is one of desire, or a poor man.

Fancy and desire have a conversation, and if it were fond and desire, then the ending would not be fitting.

I will check for the debate page, of which it titles the poem as I and the great dumpster book collection has.

I love the mystery though, and heres to revealing a historical mystery.

Thanks for the link!
