glossary on slang terms and such:
'new paper' - local tabloid. loads of crap, but good for football news.
'zidane' - french football player.
'mat' - currently, a malay guy who likes either heavy rock or rap music.
'f4, energy' - taiwanese boybands
i board the train
and i look disdainfully
at the kid with his new paper and his zidane jersey proclaiming allegiance to les bleus
at the baggy trousered mat and his discman of loud rap - he means it, yo!
at the schoolgirls in their uniforms chatting loudly about their f4 and their energy
at the mobile phones which light up blue, green, yellow
like some disgusting neon lamp to light the way of the weary towards inane messages that mean nothing
i walk, inhale the disinfectant, and look out the plexi-glass window
and i see this metropolis that we have built
this cosmopolitan cultural crap
this shining city of east-meets-west
this technology-meets-tradition
this brilliant society of useless achievements
and i realise then
that we all don't want to be here.
