Refugee
in the days she'd sit
weaving, creating, tying together
loving, a shelter above the fury
she'd hold out her hands
and create order
he was meant to dream
he toiled, he built, he soared
they grew
and as the night came
he'd go home to her arms
seasons flew
the sky bronzed
the geese scattered
and their feathers fell back to earth
a lilting reminder of what was
the stones rose around their memory
and the childrens' laughter faded
subdued by the creeping coldness
white walls enclosed their future
bubbling oxygen
plastic tubes, vials
a mixture of God
drowned in chemicals
slowly the warmth of the night was lost
a secure embrace, a soul whisper
spun out to the galaxies
she awoke with a shiver
he was gone
they were one, but alone
the first light, pale and weak
as dishwater illuminated
the dying embers
rubbing sleep from her eyes
and shaking mud
from her combat-weary boots
stumbling to her feet
and trudging on
she trips once
cursing and glancing back
she notices a fallen Cornerstone
Time was gone
and for a moment
she knew where it went wrong
weaving, creating, tying together
loving, a shelter above the fury
she'd hold out her hands
and create order
he was meant to dream
he toiled, he built, he soared
they grew
