From a guide to British Slang:

Quote:
Fanny -

This is the word for a woman's front bits! One doesn't normally talk about anyone's fanny as it is a bit rude. You certainly don't have a fanny pack, or smack people on their fannys - you would get arrested for that! Careful use of this word in the UK is advised!

Fanny pack?

I can one up you, Char. I had the Celine Dion tape that had her singing a song with them. I've since gotten rid of it. It's now in a landfill in Canada.

It scared me when I was in the US and somebody mentioned a fanny pack. I was like WTF??????

we call them bum bags in the UK

I remember hearing somebody on the telly when I was a lot younger talk about sitting on their fanny and I was quite shocked at that too!

Meanwhile, I checked my computer dictionary (afterwards I wished I just looked there first to avoid awkwardness for anyone) too - and to my suprise that word was there (tried to edit my previous reply too but I couldn't). Like I said,

(both "directions" were mentioned)

Anywayyy, I like some of Bee gees's songs.

Well, how else are you supposed to learn these slang words if you don't ask?

And don't worry, I don't think there was any awkwardness at all...I do think its kind of funny that the Bee Gee's being of Aussie/British origins would write a song about a girl named Fanny

Well yes I know its best to ask, it's just that I wish the words I ask about weren't so often about that particular, er, subject. It's embarassing - makes it look like I do it on purpose. (or worse, that I talk trashy half the time)
