I like that if you just look at your shadow, you look like some sort of ultra marathoner.

This is sort of a random Interference brag including a few new pics. On Sunday Nikon and I earned our Schutzhund 1 title winning the High SchH1 award and High Obedience (highest obedience score of the trial, all levels) award. Schutzhund consists of three phases - tracking, obedience, and protection. You have to get 70/100 pts in tracking and obedience to pass/earn the title and 80/100 in protection to pass/earn the title. I lost High In Trial (highest overall score, all levels) by two points to my training director who has been in regional and national competitions. This is kind of a big deal for me, I've put more into this than anything else in my lifetime! I used to do gymnastics which obviously requires great technique and discipline but working with a dog - another living thing with his own moods and temperament - is so insanely complex. I've been training Nikon for this since he was born (he turned 3 in Aug), heck even before that! I was told that only about 30% of people pass this with their first try. There were 7 entries for the SchH1 level and only my friend and I passed. Overall I'd guestimate (based on being a nerd and reading all the trial results in the various organizations' bi-monthly publications) that less than 100 people earn this title in the US each year. Besides winning awards and earning the title, I'm super-proud that Nikon received a "pronounced" rating (highest possible) in the protection phase. This rating is not part of the score but recognizing the dog's fighting drive and courage under pressure. Nikon is currently being treated like a king. If you need me I am on cloud nine!

Congratulations to you and Nikon! Is he being trained for law enforcement, or is this a hobby?

This is a hobby for me and I won't ever sell him for anything, but he would make a decent patrol dog. At home he can be lazy and acts like an ornery old dog (he's only 3) but in protection he is truly protective of me, not just doing the routine for the reward, and his aggression is very real. In the Schutzhund routine they are "driven" with the stick which means pushed forward by the helper (the helper is the decoy/person agitating the dog) and hit repeatedly and Nikon never shifts, only fights back harder. He actually has a temperament better suited for law enforcement work than for the sport of Schutzhund, but Schutzhund is the most popular as far as protection sports/work goes and better clubs and helpers are available, so I start with that (since it's also more precise and stylized than others) and when the dog is mature, I have other clubs and decoys that I work with on more "real life" protection scenarios. Nikon already had a Protection Alert title from Service Dogs of America.
If I had more space and more time, I would love to have a kennel and train more or sell trained or started dogs. I'm always joking with the campus security at the college where I work that if they let me bring my dogs in the buildings (they are allowed on campus but not indoors) I will train them to detect and alert five different drugs since they like to bust kids for having drugs on campus. |
