Susan Collins isn’t sure she can support marriage equality now that the democrats played politics with reconciliation…

How does Maine keep electing her ?
Look, I have little reason to do anything to defend Susan Collins - but that's not what she said.

She said she doesn't think the Republicans as a whole will support it anymore because of the reconciliation bill, but she is still voting in favor of it.

Any thoughts on Senator Manchin's role in the ‘Inflation Reduction Act’ ?

Manchin has almost always been on the receiving end of hate and (ahem) vitriol here in Free Your Mind.

When deserved, right?

It seems like he’s about to do the right thing, why would anyone hate on him?

It’s the GOP who blindly hates ther opponents no matter what and want to burn it all down and seek revenge on the kind while only ever passing tax cuts for the wealthy. Democrats are actually interested in governing.

Remember: the two sides are not the same.

Biden administration to fill border wall gaps near Yuma, Arizona
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/im...-fill-border-wall-gaps-yuma-arizona-rcna40567

President Joe Biden halted new wall construction after he took office, but he has since made closing the gaps just south of Yuma a priority.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, who is seeking his party nomination’s next week to defend the seat in November, has pressed the Biden administration to close the gaps, calling them a challenge for officials trying to secure the border.

Mayors Bowser and Eric Adams also in the news lately, strongly advocating for more resources to stem their local crises........ with a few thousand migrants arriving in each city.

(CNN)The House of Representatives voted Friday evening to ban assault-style weapons, sending the bill to the Senate where it's not expected to advance.

The final vote was 217-213.

Democrats Henry Cuellar of Texas, Jared Golden of Maine, Ron Kind of Wisconsin, Vicente Gonzalez of Texas and Kurt Schrader of Oregon voted against the ban. Republicans Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Chris Jacobs of New York voted for the bill.

I do feel like some blame can and should be directed toward President Biden.

I’m not sure I would have kept a single Trump appointee around. There needed to be a purge of anyone who served under him

As we keep seeing they are incapable of doing the right thing.

Jon Stewart is a very intelligent and funny man who appears to have a heart of gold. Should have been my husband too, but alas that didn't work out for me.

God bless him for fighting for veterans while up against all the lies and hypocrisy of politicians.

Ukraine War: Zelensky orders civilians to evacuate Donetsk region
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-62365797

The region has seen heavy clashes amid a slow advance by Russian forces, who already control large parts of it.

"We will use all available opportunities to save as many lives as possible and to limit Russian terror as much as possible," the president added.

It is not the first time the Ukrainian authorities have told people to leave the area. Between 200,000 and 220,000 civilians still live in the unoccupied area of Donetsk, according to Ukrainian estimates.

An evacuation notice from the government warned the coming winter would make thing worse, especially for children.

Russia 'Clearly in a Lot of Trouble' in Ukraine War: Security Expert
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/worl...le-in-ukraine-war-security-expert/ar-AA109P7m

Speaking with GB News on Sunday, British Professor Anthony Glees discussed the state of Russian forces in Ukraine and said that the invading nation could be headed toward a "significant defeat." Glees is a "nationally and internationally published expert on European affairs... and security," and currently serves as an emeritus professor at the University of Buckingham.

"We and the Americans assess that 75,000 Russian soldiers have either been killed or been wounded," the professor said. "That's a hell of a lot. And 80 percent of active Russian forces are now bogged now in the east of Ukraine. Putin had hoped to win this war in a matter of days, and what has actually happened is that it is grinding, not towards a stalemate but a defeat. It seems that if the battle of Kherson ends up in Ukraine's favor, Russia will have suffered a significant defeat."

The Kherson Oblast region is located in Southern Ukraine, located along the Black Sea and bordering the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014. Given its strategic value, Kherson was among the first of Ukraine's provinces to come under Russian occupation after the start of the invasion earlier this year.

Different regions, different news.
But no end in sight.

WASHINGTON — A U.S. strike in Afghanistan over the weekend killed top al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri, the Associated Press reported Monday.

The White House did not immediately confirm the strike. But President Joe Biden is set to deliver remarks Monday night to announce a successful counterterrorism operation against a "significant" al-Qaida target in Afghanistan.

Biden will speak at 7:30 p.m. ET, according to a last-minute update to the president's schedule.

What a welcome surprise in the news tonight. Thanks to the intelligence community and the military for never giving up the hunt, and to President Biden for authorizing the elimination of this guy. Ayman al-Zawahri was a real enemy of everything we stand for in the West.

Quite a time to be chanting “let’s go Brandon” at a Saudi golf tournament.

I have no idea who that Jack guy is, but they made up

Jon Stewart truly cares about veterans, his temper and anger are righteous. I wish more people cared like he does and turned it into action like he does.

Romney voted against it. And Rand Paul made some speech about veterans not being able to prove that burn pits caused their health problems and the bill putting the economy at risk. He is the definition of a fortunate son.

Eleven Republican senators voted Tuesday against a bipartisan measure, the PACT Act, that is designed to help veterans who were exposed to toxic chemicals while deployed abroad.

The bill was approved in the Senate by a vote of 86-11 a week after 41 Republicans elected to stall the final passage of the measure, citing concerns over its cost. Twenty-five Republicans who voted against the bill last week voted for a nearly identical version of the legislation in June.

The effort to block the legislation caused an uproar among veterans groups, with critics arguing that aid for veterans was being held hostage over GOP opposition to another measure, the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes significant amount of money to combat climate change and lower health care costs.

On Tuesday, the 11 no votes included:

Mitt Romney of Utah
Rand Paul of Kentucky
Mike Crapo of Idaho
James Lankford of Oklahoma
Mike Lee of Utah
Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming
James Risch of Idaho
Richard Shelby of Alabama
Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania
Tommy Tuberville of Alabama
Thom Tillis of North Carolina

All 11 senators also voted against the bill in June.

What an awful, awful person.

And given last night’s results, we do see a binary choice in the fall: democracy vs authoritarianism.

No matter where you live or how reasonable your individual candidate might be in your nice suburban district, if you vote for a republicans you are voting for the party of insurrectionists.

I find Kari Lake chilling. She will absolutely order mass executions.
