The Pope resigns / New Pope discussion

Well, I can see this thread is already going to be a waste of time.

And you wonder why there's no discourse in Free Your Mind.

Well, it is the Pope.

It is actually a remarkably modern thing to say that you are no longer up to snuff and you want to move aside for the next generation to take your place. Compare that with the last couple of years of JPII's papacy, where he was essentially a walking corpse.

I was going to post pretty much this. Better to resign than have all that morbid speculation about when you'll finally cark it, too.

My first two posts were negative, yes. But I struggle to think of a position of power that is more out of touch with modern values. I remember our very own Cardinal George Pell was one of the people rumoured to replace JP2, and his views are archaic as well.

I think the reason other popes have not resigned is because they would have nothing to do

nowadays these old codgers have viagra

"Hey, I want to direct wry satirical commentary towards the Pope!"

"This would be a good time to do so!"

"I know!"

"But what's funny about the Catholic church?"

"Well, gee, everything!"

"You're right! I'm sure with a wealth of foibles like that, you can come up with something clever and thought-provoking that is simultaneously humorous!"

"Oh yeah, piece of cake!

...did you hear the one about the priest who raped a kid?"

I don't know man. As unoriginal as some of them are, "shhh, let's not talk about it anymore" is much worse. besides, since most of them were recently rewritten with Penn State punch lines, it's almost like they're new again!

What do you call a resigning Pope? Ex-Benedict!

Also Paddy Power has installed Richard Dawkins at 666-1 to be the new Pope, and Bono 1000-1.

i hope he sent in his letter of resignation to God himself, seeing as God is meant to have given him the job in the first place! :tsk:

when i was at (catholic) school, we were told that the Pope was God's representative here on Earth... so, does that mean God's resigned? i actually wouldn't blame him, what with all the stick he gets!

Papal Infallibility (sp?) only became a Catholic doctrine in the 19th century. Before, Popes would go around saying they were infallible from time to time, but they made it a requirement for all Catholics to believe that just as they were starting to lose power over Europe.

I find papal infallibility to be absurd. First off, the pope is human like all of us. Secondly, there is something idolatrous about that. Not that Catholics worship the Pope - we certainly don't - but to say another human being is one step away from God puts him on a pedestal that they don't belong on.

Embattled British cardinal becomes first to skip papal conclave because of personal scandal

VATICAN CITY — In a season of startling change for the Catholic Church, the latest break with tradition was as unexpected as it was a wakeup call to the 115 men who will elect the next pope.
Britain’s highest-ranking Catholic leader resigned and removed himself Monday from the upcoming conclave, saying he did not want allegations that he engaged in improper conduct with priests to be a distraction during the solemn process of choosing the next leader of the church’s 1.2 billion-member flock.
It was the first time a cardinal has recused himself from a conclave because of personal scandal, according to Vatican historians.
The Vatican insisted that Pope Benedict XVI accepted Cardinal Keith O’Brien’s resignation purely because O’Brien was nearing the retirement age of 75 — not because of the accusations.
