Agreed

You know, things are becoming too good to be true for this Pope. He's so humble and believes so firmly in social justice, I can't help but wonder if it's only a matter of time before shit hits the fan and we see a corrupt and even ugly side to him. It's a like a miracle ( )that there's actually a Pope who gives a damn about what Jesus taught.

Pope boosts Vatican laws against child abuse

Quote:
Pope Francis has bolstered criminal legislation against child abuse in the Vatican in an overhaul of laws that apply to the clergy and lay people who work in the city state.

The Vatican said on Thursday in a statement that the pope's decree included "a broader definition of the category of crimes against minors" including child prostitution, sexual acts with children and child pornography.

He also increased cooperation with other states against money laundering and terrorism in a continuation of reforms started by his predecessor, Benedict XVI, to get the Vatican in line with international legislation.

The new norms also increase criminal liability for people working in Vatican departments - a potentially radical change that would complement his plans to root out corruption from the scandal-ridden Vatican bureaucracy.

The laws will come into force on September 1.

So...

The cardinals were fully aware the Church is corrupt and abusive when they elected Pope Francis? You mean, they had a conscience?

Um, wow.

Looks like God does work in mysterious ways

The Aljazeera headline was a bit misleading. Here is AP's article. As an independent City-State, Vatican City has its own set of criminal laws (different from Church law). Until this recent change, the laws in place were taken from the 1889 Italian Code. Pope Francis updated these laws and covers in greater detail crimes against children. It also, for example, criminalizes leaks of Vatican information.

This latest Pope Francis quote just blew me away.

According to NBC News, he is quoted as saying: "If someone is gay who searches for the Lord and has goodwill, who am I to judge?"

Of course, he preceded that by saying "They say they exist."

So yeah.

That's not exactly a new sentiment - yet glad to see it get more emphasis.

But he's still against women being priests.

Maybe the next guy will.

It will be interesting to see how few enthusiastic discussions women priests are likely to be generated even among progressives. That authority thing, I guess.

Yeah, I have a hard time considering this progress. My first thought was that it sounds like the same rationalization of anti-gay feelings that we've heard before.

It's still sooooooo much better than Benedict.

Also still, I spend about a half second each day caring about what the Pope thinks about anything.
