So, if you're not hunting and not a homicidal maniac, then why do you need to own so many guns? Honest question, cause I just don't understand that.

Because target shooting is a hobby and not all guns are the same.

It's like owning more than 1 guitar. People that dont know guitars thinks oh well what do you need more than 1 guitar for? But when you know guitars you know different guitars make different tones and sounds. look at all the different guitars edge has. Then you have the acoustic vs electric thing as well.

I guess the same can be said for guns. If you arent familiar with all the different types, then you might wonder why someone would own more than 1. Both of which are a hobby of mine. With the guns and target shooting you have all different types of calibers, semi-auto pistols revolvers rifles shotguns etc etc.

Does that analogy make sense? I can foresee this argument coming:

Well guitars dont kill people but guns do!!!!!!

Well if you crack someone in the head with a guitar it's just as lethal, havent you seen friday the 13th part 8 Jason takes manhattan?

God, the post was actually beginning to sound like it was written by a person with the slightest grasp on reality until here.

Guess I never considered shooting things a hobby. Then again, there's also archery and stuff like that, guess it would be similar?

Yes it is similar. Target shooting is a hobby many people enjoy. It is a hard skill to learn and takes a lot of time to master.

I have never been a fan of shooting living things. Yes, I have shot dead laptops, appliances, etc etc to let my destructive side out, but animals is where i draw the line. If someone needs to hunt to eat to survive then fine, but the whole hunting for sport thing is bullshit.

Similar to how an assault weapon and a guitar can be used to kill?

Can I post an article here every time a "responsible" gun owner accidentally murders a member of his family? Because that's a more common outcome for owning a gun than anything involving heroics or self defense.

I'm very liberal but guns are a touchy subject. It's fun as hell to shoot targets (I consider sport hunting to be an immoral activity) and it is rewarding. But at the same time I hate all the paranoid right wing nutjobs who think they need 20 guns to protect their family from Mexican drug runners working with Al Qaeda terrorists infected with Ebola. Everything about the NRA pisses me off, so I'm considering buying a gun when I get older (I'm 19 and still in college so having a gun now is simply not a good idea) and starting an organization called Gun Owners for Gun Control. There needs to be some liberal gun organization out there and I would love to start it.

Great point, there are so many accidental shootings in the US. If you have a gun in your home the odds of you dying of a gunshot wound go up dramatically. You're way more likely to either shoot yourself (whether by accident or suicide) or a family member than to use that gun against an intruder.

True, there are a lot of 'accidents' in the news, where kids accidentally shoot their parents or each other or whatever... shows once again that people are irresponsible beings. Perhaps just having a gun permit isn't enough, there should be training or whatever so people have responsibility.

I want stricter background checks, waiting periods, mandatory training, mandatory gun safes, a database of gun owners, stricter penalties for people whose guns are used in crimes, and probably some other measures I'll think of soon.

What baffles me is how many people do not want this. What the hell is wrong with the NRA? Afraid to lose power? political power is apparently more important than people's lives..
