If this were a national election year I think there'd be a quantifiable impact. Not likely huge, but certainly something based on the vaccine rates falling so closely in line with the red/blue divide.
 
I love how we are opening the land border to vaxxed Americans on August 9, but Biden just extended the US border closure to Canadians for another 30 days. While we are more vaccinated and will only extend the delta (pardon the pun) with each passing day...

You’re really fixated on having a liberalness competition. Enough of this “we are better than you” undertone. Rest assured, people coming to Canada across a land border are likely to be from states where they have the same “we are better than you” attitudes.

It was the same thing a year ago. This virus doesn’t care who is better. We are seeing plenty of breakthrough infections and, honestly, if you really are so much better, then if Americans bring you delta less people are gonna die because they’ll actually be vaccinated. We won’t be shipping unvaccinated Floridians up to Canada, but you most certainly will be shipping vaccinated québécois down to Florida if a land border is open.

What the hell are you talking about? I've never fixated on any competition. I've been probably complaining the loudest here about our government's incompetence and our rollout while actively pointing out how much yours was better for weeks and months. DaveC and I have been absolutely consistent here - our Premier is a failure and our federal procurement was a failure. I've called you the envy of the world since January! I'm sorry but you're totally out of line on this.

I have no idea what you're even on about. I think the border should be open and there is no logical reasoning at this point why it's not. And there is even less logical reasoning for it to be open one way but not the other.

Also, to add, I believe that I was the only person here to agree with you that our uptake of vaccine won't be much better than the US one because we have plenty of morons. In fact, I was wrong and pleasantly surprised. It was your other compatriots that disagreed.

I'm sorry but I'm totally annoyed by your post and I don't really do that unless I have reason to.

More covid cases every day at the Olympics. If Simone Biles gets it and has to drop out I just give up. I am so looking forward to watching her.

I’m sorry if you’re annoyed by my post, but your post equally annoyed me. This is the third or fourth time now you’ve compared vaccination numbers in Canada to vaccination numbers in the US. You at one point proudly noted that Canada was going to overtake the US in percent of the population vaccinated.

Imagine if, when the US got off to the races, Americans were out saying “America has 3x the vaccination rate as our Canadian neighbors.” It doesn’t sit right with me. If we removed borders it would look far more like a contour, not a choropleth.

I think it’s more to do with getting the perception they don’t care off the news cycles which is most definitely polling poorly in the burbs.

Deep down they are still trying to undermine Biden. They need the media to back off and change the narrative for now.

Welp, I believe they found themselves a bit of a loophole.

They aren't mandating vaccines on the players - only saying that if teams are unable to field a team because of an outbreak amongst unvaccinated players that there won't be a makeup - it'll be a forfeit.

Technically speaking it doesn't force a player to get vaccinated.

it's a whole lot of bullshit that we're talking about vaccinating kids under 12 when there are seniors and immunocompromised folks in other parts of the world who haven't gotten a single dose.

Dennison had served as the Vikings' offensive line coach/run game coordinator the past two seasons. In a statement Friday, the Vikings said they were still in discussions with Dennison about the league's COVID-19 protocols.

Another coach in the league, New England Patriots co-offensive line coach Cole Popovich, also won't be with his team in 2021 in a decision related to the COVID-19 vaccine and NFL guidelines, league sources confirmed to ESPN.

The vaccine is required for all Tier 1 staff, including coaches, front-office executives, equipment managers and scouts. Players are not required to receive the COVID-19 vaccine but will face strict protocols during training camp and throughout the season that vaccinated players will be able to forgo.

All media needs to focus on this and stop using breakthrough infections for clicks and panic porn. What they're doing is just giving unvaccinated people another reason/excuse to not get vaccinated.

They just say "well the vaccines don't even prevent you from getting covid so what's the point"? The messaging has been really messed up from the CDC and the WH too.
 
The "breakthrough cases" part of the news cycle is starting to get to me. A lot of the hope/joy I had has faded. Especially with stories like this one out of Israel citing 40% drops in antibodies each month and a 64% efficacy rate against the only variant that matters:

Like, if I was fully vaccinated in April, am I screwed in the fall without a booster? It is starting to feel like we're going to be in a permanent cycle of 6 month boosters because fuckwits refuse to do their part to create functional herd immunity. Depressing as hell to think that the real pathway out of the pandemic involves convincing 25% of the population that they're wrong while the messaging around the vaccines has been awful.

But then I see stories like the one a few posts above mine, or this article that claims breakthrough symptoms are no worse than a bad cold and I'm not sure what to feel:

It's cool that I can go to concerts again, but I don't really all that comfortable doing so under the current circumstances. I'll do it, because I can't let fear run my life, but we really shouldn't still be in this position considering the tools at our disposal.

Sorry to vent. I've been in ill health in other areas lately and my frustrations bubble over sometimes.

i have no idea what is taking so long for this to happen.

every area where the federal government is able to make vaccines mandatory? they should. that includes air and train travel.

want to get on a plane? no problem. proof of vaccine or a negative covid results from within 24 hours of your flight (both ways, mind you). make it hurt to not get this thing.

How about those parents in FL burning masks in protest over their kids (who can't yet get vaccinated and could get covid) having to wear masks in school
