Egypt Heads to the Polls

World News - Egypt's elections: A struggle between secularism and political Islam -- and how it may transform the Middle East Oh boy. I have a feeling this is not going to turn out well at all. |

France's initial experiment with democracy took nearly a century to right itself. To somehow expect the Middle East/North Africa to get everything right within a year is insanity. And, yes, considering how many wars Europe endured transitioning from monarchs to elected officials, I don't expect this part of the world to magically be able transition entirely peacefully either. All the more reason for the West to seriously start thinking beyond oil, irrespective of whether you think climate change is real or not.

Yeah, there's a couple people in that list that sound promising when the blurb on them starts (favoring the poor, wanting to unite the Arabs, not having religion be the ruling force), but then we get to them being supported by extremist groups or in favor of wars or whatnot and things screech to a halt.
melon's right, though, the problems that exist will take a very long time to get sorted out. Any progress that comes now is certainly a good thing, and if one of these candidates do manage to start turning the area around for the better and their relationship with the world at large stabilizes a bit, that would be wonderful. But yeah. We won't wake up on Friday hearing the world is all rainbows and sunshine now, no. |

Yep it's nice to dream of free energy but these obstacles are real and they don't even include the obstacles of the science not being close to replacing fossil fuels yet. |

Given the political instability in the Middle East I have a great idea.
Let's employ Americans to build a pipeline from the oil sands of Canada to the distribution hubs and refineries of the United States. Who could possibly be against that? |

The only aspect I can relate to is the peace treaty. Musri has stated more than once that if he's elected the treaty will be revoked. Other candidates have said that they will open the treaty for "revisions". The bottom line is that Egypt needs this treaty just like Israel does. The fact that we don't have a touchy-feely relationship doesn't matter - what DOES matter is that there is no longer a state of war between the countries and for 32 years no Egyptian soldiers have died fighting Israel. The peace treaty is in Egypt's best interest and they would definitely be shooting themselves in the foot if they revoked it. Personally, if I had to choose, I prefer an ice cold peace with Egypt than to go back to a state of war. I hope the Egyptians think very hard about this and place their welfare before any anti-Israel feelings they have. |

In all the discussion of the environmental impact of Keystone, nobody wants to talk about the fact that the Americans are currently paying us about 20% less than world oil price for our oil that they're refining. If we want to talk about economic equity, then what we should do is build refineries here. Alternately, if there is already too much refinery capacity in Oklahoma and elsewhere and you want the Keystone pipeline that badly, pay us a 20% import tax. The Chinese are willing to pay world oil price - should be a no-brainer. |

Chinese are Communists
the only reason they have not over run Canada, is because we provide their defense at no cost to them, a 20% discount is a bargain Team America !! |

Y'know something Deep? I totally respect your opinions and enjoy reading your posts...and have absolutely NOTHING against you personally, but I'm getting really tired of you slamming my country for no reason. You really can't be serious in saying that a country that has elected a radical Islamist who, in a few years, will be putting Egyptian women behind veils (if not sooner) and who has now said that he wishes to strengthen ties with Iran (who we all know is one of the shiniest beacons of democracy in the Middle East) is more democratic than us....
You can say what you like about Israel (and you HAVE.....) but one thing you cannot say is that we are not an honest democracy. Again.....I respect you....... ![]() |
