Using a Pedal and Amp

Hey guys, just a quick question -

I have a Spider II 15 watt amplifier and a Digitech Hot Head distortion pedal. When I try to use the pedal along with the amplifier, and I press the pedal, all of a sudden the volume on the amp goes to monstrous heights and nearly kills my eardrums -- and the amplifier is already on an extremely low volume setting.

Do you know how to fix this?

There's probably a 'level' or 'volume' knob on the pedal. That's the pedal output volume. Try turning it down? The trick is to get it the same volume (or a little louder) as when the pedal is disengaged.

I have the pedal, i forgot what it is called but the last knob to the right (the one covered in black) is obviously turned too high, if that doesnt work, then turn every knob down to zero, then work from there...
